Chapter 3: The Door That Changed Everything
I arrived at Evelyn Price’s office twenty minutes early.
I couldn’t remember the last time I had felt so many emotions at once.
Anger.
Confusion.
Hope.
Fear.
The office was located in an old brick building downtown. Nothing about it looked dramatic. No giant signs. No fancy entrance.
Just a quiet place where secrets waited behind closed doors.
A receptionist looked up when I walked in.
“Can I help you?””
“I’m here to see Evelyn Price.””
The woman immediately checked her computer.
“You’re Nia Carter?””
I nodded.
Her expression softened.
“She’s been expecting you.””
That sentence made my stomach twist.
Expecting me.
Like my mother knew this moment would happen.
A minute later, Evelyn opened the office door.
She was in her sixties, with silver hair pulled neatly behind her shoulders. She studied my face for a long moment.
Then she smiled sadly.
“You look just like your mother.””
My eyes burned.
“I hear that a lot.””
“She would be proud of you.””
I looked away.
“I don’t feel very strong right now.””
Evelyn gestured toward a chair.
“Sit down, Nia.””
I sat across from her desk.
She placed a large folder in front of me.
“My client, Evelyn Carter, created a trust fourteen years ago.””
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
Evelyn’s expression became serious.
“Because your mother included specific conditions.””
She opened the folder.
“She wanted you to have full control of the property only after you reached a certain age and only if certain circumstances occurred.””
“What circumstances?””
Evelyn looked at me carefully.
“She was concerned your father might allow someone else to influence decisions about the house.””
My breath caught.
“Diane.””
Evelyn didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I looked down at the documents.
“My mother knew.””
“Yes.””
“About Diane?””
“She suspected.””
The room became quiet.
Evelyn continued.
“Your mother loved your father, Nia. She didn’t want to believe he would betray her. But she was also realistic.””
I swallowed.
“What happens now?””
Evelyn pushed a paper toward me.
“Today is the final expiration date of the trust condition.””
I stared at the document.
“What does that mean?””
She smiled gently.
“It means your mother’s instructions can finally be carried out.””
My fingers trembled as I signed the papers.
Evelyn made a phone call.
Then she looked at me.
“Are you ready to know the truth?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
She stood.
“Then we need to go to your house.””
My heart stopped.
“My house?””
“Yes.””
The drive back felt unreal.
I watched the streets pass by through the window, wondering how my life had changed in less than twenty-four hours.
Yesterday, I was being thrown out.
Today, I was returning with a lawyer.
When we pulled into the driveway, Diane’s car was there.
So was my father’s.
Evelyn looked at the house.
“Are they expecting us?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Good.””
“Why?””
Her expression was unreadable.
“Because your mother wanted the truth revealed in front of everyone.””
We walked toward the front door.
Before I could knock, it opened.
Diane stood there.
Her face changed the second she saw Evelyn.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You.””
Evelyn calmly stepped inside.
“Hello, Diane.””
My stepmother’s smile vanished.
“What are you doing here?””
Evelyn ignored her and turned toward me.
“Nia, this is the moment your mother waited for.””
Diane crossed her arms.
“I don’t know what game you’re playing, but this is private property.””
Evelyn looked at her.
“Actually, it isn’t.””
Diane’s face tightened.
My father appeared behind her.
The moment he saw the folder in Evelyn’s hand, he froze.
His entire body went still.
Like he had just seen a ghost.
“Richard,” Evelyn said quietly.
My father’s voice was barely a whisper.
“No.””
Diane looked at him.
“What is she talking about?””
He didn’t answer.
She turned back to Evelyn.
“Why are you here?””
Evelyn opened the folder.
“I’m here to inform Nia that the final condition of Evelyn Carter’s trust expired this morning.””
Diane laughed nervously.
“That’s impossible.””
Evelyn looked directly at me.
“Nia is now the sole owner of this entire house.””
The silence that followed was terrifying.
Diane’s mouth opened.
Then closed.
My father grabbed the edge of the table.
“No…”
I stared at him.
“Dad?””
But he wasn’t looking at me.
He was looking at the folder.
At one specific document.
Diane turned toward him slowly.
“You told me this house belonged to you.””
My father said nothing.
Her voice rose.
“You told me she couldn’t take anything from us.””
“Diane—”
“You lied to me?””
The room exploded with accusations.
But Evelyn remained calm.
She reached into her bag.
“There is one more document.””
My father’s face turned pale.
“Don’t.””
Everyone stopped.
Evelyn looked at him.
“Richard, you know exactly what this is.””
He stepped forward.
“Nia doesn’t need to see that.””
For the first time, Evelyn’s calm expression disappeared.
“She absolutely does.””
My father moved suddenly.
Too quickly.
He lunged toward the folder in Evelyn’s hands.
“Give me that!””
Diane screamed.
I stepped back.
And Evelyn held the document tightly against her chest.
May you like
Because whatever was written on that paper…
was the one thing my father had spent years making sure I never discovered.
