Chapter 11: The Last Thing My Mother Knew
The envelope in Marcus’s hand felt like a countdown.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
Even the house seemed silent.
My mother’s handwriting was visible from across the room.
A piece of her.
In the hands of the man who destroyed everything.
“Give me that,” Evelyn said.
Marcus laughed.
“No.””
“You have no right to possess that document.””
“Rights are funny things.””
He looked at me.
“Your mother understood that.””
I stepped forward.
“What does it say?””
Marcus smiled.
“That depends.””
“On what?””
“On whether you’re ready to hear it.””
I hated that he sounded like he was in control.
Like this was a performance.
Like our pain was entertainment.
“Read it.””
My voice surprised even me.
Marcus tilted his head.
“You’re more like your mother than I expected.””
“Read the letter.””
He slowly opened the envelope.
But before he could remove the paper, Diane spoke.
“Stop.””
Everyone looked at her.
She was crying.
Not loudly.
Quietly.
“I know what that says.””
My stomach tightened.
“You do?””
Diane nodded.
“I saw it.””
Marcus looked annoyed.
“You weren’t supposed to mention that.””
I turned toward her.
“What does it say?””
She wiped her face.
“Your mother knew.””
“Knew what?””
Diane looked at Richard.
Then at me.
“That your father was involved.””
My heart sank.
I looked at my father.
He didn’t deny it.
Not this time.
“Dad?””
He sat down slowly.
“I didn’t know how deep it went.””
The room became unbearable.
“How many lies are there?””
He covered his face.
“I wanted to fix it.””
I laughed through tears.
“You keep saying that.””
“I did.””
“When?””
He looked at me.
“When your mother found out.””
That sentence changed everything.
“When she found out?””
My father nodded.
“She confronted me.””
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Tell her the truth.””
My father looked terrified.
But he finally spoke.
“Your mother knew about the debt.””
I stared.
“She knew Marcus had control over the house?””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she wanted to protect you.””
I looked down.
Of course.
Even dying, my mother was protecting me.
My father continued.
“She told me to leave Marcus.””
“And you didn’t.””
His silence answered.
“I was scared.””
I looked at him.
“You chose him over her.””
“No.””
“You did.””
He looked broken.
“I thought I could undo it.””
Marcus smiled.
“And you never could.””
I turned toward Marcus.
“You’re enjoying this.””
He shrugged.
“I’m watching the truth come out.””
“You manipulated everyone.””
“No.””
His voice became colder.
“Your father made choices. Diane made choices. I simply used them.””
Diane looked at him.
“You promised nobody would get hurt.””
Marcus laughed.
“You believed me?””
Her face fell.
That hurt me more than I expected.
Because Diane had done terrible things.
But she had also been used.
Marcus opened the letter.
“Your mother wrote this the night before she died.””
Everyone stared.
He began reading.
“I know Richard made a terrible mistake. But I also know someone else is guiding him.”
Marcus paused.
His eyes moved to Diane.
“Interesting.””
Diane closed her eyes.
He continued.
“The person helping Marcus is someone close enough to know my routines.”
I felt a chill.
“Someone close.””
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
Then at Diane.
Then at my father.
“Your mother suspected all three of them.””
I looked at Evelyn.
My stomach dropped.
“No.””
Marcus smiled.
“That’s the best part.””
Evelyn’s face remained calm.
But I noticed something.
She looked nervous.
For the first time.
My father noticed too.
“Evelyn?””
She said nothing.
Marcus folded the letter.
“You all think the enemy was outside this house.””
He looked at me.
“But your mother discovered the truth.””
I stepped back.
“What truth?””
Marcus held up the letter.
“She found out who had been feeding me information.””
The room went silent.
Then Marcus said the name.
And everyone turned.
Not toward my father.
Not toward Diane.
Toward Evelyn.
My heart stopped.
“That’s impossible.””
Marcus smiled.
“Is it?””
Evelyn slowly lowered her eyes.
My father whispered:
“Tell her.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Tell me what?””
The woman who had promised to protect my mother’s wishes looked at me with tears in her eyes.

Then she said:
“I made one mistake.””
