Chapter 13: The Envelope Beneath the Window

Nobody touched the envelope.

Not at first.

It sat on the floor beneath the broken window, surrounded by shattered glass, as if someone had thrown a piece of the past directly into our lives.

My name was written across the front.

Nia.

The handwriting was my mother’s.

My father stood frozen near the doorway.

Diane covered her mouth.

Evelyn looked terrified.

And Marcus…

Marcus looked satisfied.

That was the detail I couldn’t ignore.

He wasn’t surprised.

He wasn’t confused.

He looked like someone watching a plan finally reach its final stage.

“You knew this would happen,” I said.

Marcus looked at me.

“I knew your mother was prepared.””

“No.””

I pointed at the envelope.

“You knew someone would throw that through the window.””

His smile faded slightly.

“I know many things.””

That answer made my stomach turn.

Evelyn stepped closer.

“Nia, don’t open it yet.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because if Marcus knows about it, there’s a reason.””

Marcus laughed softly.

“She’s right.””

Everyone looked at him.

“That envelope is the reason your mother won.””

I stared.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus walked toward the broken window but stopped several feet away.

“Your mother was never trying to protect the house.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She knew the house was just the battlefield.””

The words sent a chill through me.

“She was protecting something else.””

I looked down at the envelope.

Something more important than the property.

Something worth people lying, threatening, and destroying a family over.

I slowly picked it up.

My fingers brushed against the paper.

It felt impossible that my mother had touched this same envelope years ago.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a single flash drive.

And a note.

I unfolded the paper.

My sweet Nia,

If you are reading this, then everyone who tried to hide the truth has failed.

My eyes burned.

You may feel angry. You may feel betrayed. You may wonder why I didn’t tell you everything.

I swallowed.

The answer is simple. You were a child. And I wanted you to have a childhood.

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I could almost hear her voice.

But now you are old enough to know.

I looked at the flash drive.

Evelyn whispered:

“Your mother recorded something.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“You didn’t know about this.””

It wasn’t a question.

Marcus didn’t answer.

That was the first time I saw uncertainty on his face.

I turned toward Evelyn.

“Do we have a computer?””

“There’s one in my office.””

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

I held the flash drive tightly.

“We watch it here.””

My father stepped forward.

“Nia, maybe we should think about this.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face fell.

“Because…”

“Because you’re afraid?””

He didn’t answer.

“That’s exactly why I need to see it.””

We moved into the living room.

Evelyn connected the drive to her laptop.

Everyone gathered around.

Even Marcus.

The screen remained black for several seconds.

Then a video appeared.

My mother.

My breath disappeared.

She was sitting in the same bedroom where we had found the documents.

She looked thinner than I remembered.

But her eyes were strong.

“Hello, Nia.””

I covered my mouth.

Hearing her voice after all these years broke something inside me.

“If you are watching this, then I am no longer there to explain everything myself.””

She smiled sadly.

“I’m sorry.””

Tears fell before I could stop them.

My mother continued.

“I need you to know that your father loves you.””

I looked at Richard.

His face collapsed.

“But love does not always stop people from making terrible choices.””

My father closed his eyes.

The video continued.

“Richard was manipulated. But he also allowed himself to be manipulated.””

A painful silence filled the room.

“Marcus Vale wanted control of the property. But he needed someone inside the family.””

The video paused briefly.

Then my mother said:

“And that person was not Diane.””

Everyone froze.

Diane looked shocked.

Marcus’s face changed.

My mother continued.

“Diane made mistakes. She hurt me. She hurt Nia. But she was not the person who betrayed me first.””

I looked at Diane.

She looked like she couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

Then my mother said:

“The person who gave Marcus the information was someone I trusted more than anyone.””

Evelyn went pale.

My heart started pounding.

The video continued.

“I never wanted to believe it.””

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“But the evidence was undeniable.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then she said the name.

And the entire room changed.

“Richard’s brother, Thomas.””

My father’s head snapped up.

“What?””

The screen went black.

Everyone stared.

Then Marcus suddenly laughed.

A cold, quiet laugh.

Because he knew something we didn’t.

“What’s funny?”” I demanded.

He looked at me.

“Your mother was close.””

“Close?””

May you like

He smiled.

“But she still missed the biggest betrayal.””
