Chapter 10: The Man Who Owned the Secrets

Nobody moved.

Marcus Vale stood in my mother’s bedroom as if he belonged there.

As if he had every right to walk into the place where she had laughed, cried, and dreamed.

My father looked like he had seen a ghost.

“Marcus…”

The man smiled.

“Richard.””

The way he said my father’s name made my stomach tighten.

There was no friendship in it.

Only control.

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Marcus looked at her.

“And yet here I am.””

His eyes moved around the room.

He studied the photographs.

The furniture.

The old books.

Then he looked at me.

“Nia.””

Hearing my name from him made my skin crawl.

“You know who I am?””

I held the letter tightly.

“You’re the reason my mother was afraid.””

Marcus smiled faintly.

“Your mother was afraid of many things.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“She was afraid of you.””

His expression changed for half a second.

A tiny crack.

Then it disappeared.

“You’re emotional.””

“I’m angry.””

“That’s understandable.””

He walked further into the room.

My father immediately stepped between us.

“Leave.””

Marcus laughed.

“Now you want to protect her?””

The words hit my father like a slap.

I looked at him.

“Protect me from what?””

Nobody answered.

Marcus glanced at Diane.

“Well, this is interesting.””

Diane’s face was pale.

“You shouldn’t have come here.””

Marcus smiled.

“You always did have terrible timing, Diane.””

I froze.

“You two know each other.””

Diane looked away.

Marcus answered for her.

“We know each other very well.””

My father clenched his fists.

“Enough.””

Marcus ignored him.

“Your stepmother and I have a complicated history.””

I looked at Diane.

“How complicated?””

She didn’t speak.

Marcus smiled.

“She was supposed to help me.””

The room went silent.

“Help you do what?””

He looked at me.

“Convince your mother to sell the property.””

My fingers tightened around the letter.

“And when she refused?””

Marcus shrugged.

“Things became complicated.””

I stepped closer.

“You threatened her.””

“I negotiated.””

“You scared her.””

“I motivated her.””

The calmness in his voice made me sick.

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“You have no idea what you’ve done.””

Marcus laughed.

“Oh, I know exactly what I’ve done.””

He looked around.

“I spent years building a plan.””

My father whispered:

“Marcus, stop.””

Marcus turned toward him.

“You don’t get to tell me when to stop.””

The room became silent.

Because that was the moment I finally understood.

My father wasn’t Marcus’s partner.

He was Marcus’s prisoner.

Marcus looked back at me.

“Your mother was clever. I’ll give her that.””

“You tried to steal from her.””

“I tried to make a business decision.””

“You destroyed my family.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

That sentence made me freeze.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus smiled.

“Ask your father.””

I looked at Richard.

He looked away.

Again.

“Dad.””

Nothing.

“Tell me.””

He swallowed.

“I made mistakes.””

Marcus laughed.

“Mistakes?””

He walked closer to my father.

“You begged me for help.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Marcus continued.

“When your company was failing, you came to me.””

My father’s face went pale.

“You said you needed money.””

Evelyn looked shocked.

“Richard…”

My father whispered:

“I was desperate.””

Marcus smiled.

“And desperation makes people do interesting things.””

I looked at my father.

“What did you do?””

He closed his eyes.

“I signed an agreement.””

“What agreement?””

Marcus answered.

“One that gave me control if the debt wasn’t repaid.””

The room spun.

“The house.””

Nobody spoke.

I already knew.

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

My father had risked my mother’s home.

The place she built.

The place she protected.

All because he was desperate.

I felt tears burning.

“You almost lost everything.””

My father looked at me.

“I was trying to save us.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“You were trying to save yourself.””

The words hurt him.

But they were true.

Marcus looked satisfied.

“This is why Evelyn created the trust.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

He smiled.

“Your mother knew Richard would eventually choose fear over loyalty.””

My father looked ashamed.

Marcus stepped backward.

“But there’s one thing your mother never discovered.””

Evelyn immediately looked suspicious.

“What?””

Marcus smiled.

“She never found out who actually gave me access to her financial records.””

Nobody spoke.

My heart started pounding.

“Who?””

Marcus looked at Diane.

Diane stepped back.

“No.””

My father stared at her.

“Diane?””

Marcus smiled.

“She wasn’t just helping me.””

The room went completely silent.

“She was the one who gave me the information.””

I looked at Diane.

She shook her head.

“No.””

Marcus laughed.

“Tell them.””

Diane’s face crumbled.

“Tell them the truth.””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw genuine fear.

“I didn’t give him everything.””

Marcus smiled.

“Not everything.””

He pulled something from his coat pocket.

A small envelope.

My blood ran cold.

Because I recognized the handwriting.

My mother’s.

Marcus held it up.

“This is what everyone has been searching for.””

Evelyn took a step forward.

“Where did you get that?””

Marcus looked at me.

“Your mother gave me something before she died.””

The room froze.

“What?””

May you like

Marcus smiled.

“And what she gave me proves the person you trust most is the one who betrayed you.””
