Chapter 16: The Recording That Changed the Truth
The silence after Thomas’s words felt heavier than anything before.
Not even Marcus looked confident anymore.
Everyone was waiting.
Waiting for the rest of the recording.
Thomas smiled as if he had been waiting years for this moment.
“You’re all so eager to believe the worst version of the story.””
He looked at Marcus.
“You especially.””
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
“You’re bluffing.””
Thomas laughed.
“Am I?””
He reached into his coat and pulled out another device.
A second recorder.
My heart sank.
How many secrets had these people carried?
How many versions of the truth existed?
Thomas pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then his own voice appeared.
“We just need Evelyn gone. Once she’s gone, Richard will sign anything.””
The same recording.
Then another voice.
Marcus.
“Fine. But make sure the girl doesn’t interfere.””
My stomach turned.
Then Thomas’s voice returned.
“If anything happens to Nia, everything falls apart.””
The recording continued.
“She is the one person Evelyn protected. If Nia survives, she can expose everything.””
The room went quiet.
I felt my knees weaken.
Thomas looked at me.
“That is the part Marcus didn’t want you to hear.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You edited it.””
Thomas smiled.
“Did I?””
Evelyn took the recorder.
She listened carefully.
Then her face changed.
“It’s authentic.””
Marcus’s expression darkened.
“That proves nothing.””
“It proves you wanted Nia out of the way,” Evelyn said.
Marcus laughed.
“You think Thomas is innocent?””
Nobody answered.
Because that was the problem.
He wasn’t.
Neither of them were.
I looked at my father.
“Did you know?””
His eyes were full of shame.
“No.””
“Not about the recording?””
“No.””
“Not about Thomas?””
He shook his head.
“I knew he was dangerous.””
“But you let him near Mom.””
My father closed his eyes.
“I didn’t know.””
The words felt empty.
Everyone had an excuse.
Everyone had something they didn’t know.
But my mother was the one who paid the price.
I turned toward Thomas.
“Why are you here?””
His smile disappeared.
“Because I want what belongs to me.””
“This house?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“You still don’t understand.””
He looked confused.
“What?””
“This house was never about money.””
Thomas stared at me.
“It was my mother’s home.””
A strange expression crossed his face.
Almost regret.
Almost.
Then it vanished.
“Your mother was sentimental.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“She was human.””
The room fell silent.
Marcus suddenly moved toward the door.
Evelyn noticed.
“You’re not leaving.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Try to stop me.””
Before he reached the hallway, police sirens sounded outside.
Everyone froze.
Marcus stopped.
My heart raced.
“What’s happening?””
Evelyn looked at her phone.
“I called them.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You wouldn’t.””
“Yes.””
She held his gaze.
“I should have done it years ago.””
Officers entered moments later.
The chaos that followed felt unreal.
Questions.
Documents.
Statements.
Everyone talking at once.
Marcus and Thomas were separated.
But before Marcus was taken away, he looked at me.
“You think this is over?””
I didn’t answer.
He smiled.
“You still don’t know what your mother discovered.””
The words bothered me.
Because even after everything…
there was still something missing.
Hours later, the house finally became quiet.
The police had taken the evidence.
Evelyn sat at the dining table with me.
My father sat across from us.
Diane stood by the window.
Nobody looked the same.
Not anymore.
Evelyn placed a small envelope in front of me.
“What is this?””
“Something your mother left with me.””
I stared.
“Why didn’t you give it to me before?””
“Because she asked me not to.””
I opened it.
Inside was another letter.
My mother’s handwriting.
Nia,
If you are reading this, then the people who hurt us have finally been exposed.
I continued.
But there is one final truth you need to know.
My heart started beating faster.
The person responsible for my death is not the person everyone suspects.
I looked up.
Evelyn went pale.
My father whispered:
“What?””
I read the final sentence.
The person who betrayed me was someone who claimed to love me.
The room became silent.
Because we all understood.
My mother wasn’t talking about Marcus.
Or Thomas.
May you like
She was talking about someone inside the family.
Someone who was still sitting in that room.
