Chapter 5: The Person I Never Suspected
I stared at the photo until the screen blurred.
The person standing behind Maya and Daniel wasn’t a stranger.
It wasn’t someone from Thomas’s company.
It wasn’t someone from our past.
It was someone who had sat at my kitchen table.
Someone who had hugged my daughter.
Someone who had told me I was imagining things.
Mrs. Patterson.
I slowly lowered my phone.
She noticed.
“What happened?””
I didn’t answer.
Her face changed.
Not because she was surprised.
Because she knew.
“Maya,” I said quietly, “go upstairs.””
My daughter looked between us.
“Mom?””
“Please.””
She hesitated, then walked away.
The second she disappeared, I turned toward my neighbor.
“Why were you in that picture?””
Mrs. Patterson closed her eyes.
For a moment, she looked older than I had ever seen her.
“Because I was trying to help her.””
“Help her?””
“Yes.””
“You were meeting Daniel.””
“I was keeping him away from her.””
I laughed bitterly.
“By meeting him secretly?””
She sat down.
“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””
“You’re right.””
“I knew Thomas before you met him.””
That stopped me.
“What?””
Mrs. Patterson looked toward the window.
“Thomas wasn’t just your husband. He was like a son to me.””
I said nothing.
“He grew up next door to me. His parents died when he was young. I helped raise him.””
I felt my anger weaken.
But only slightly.
“Then explain Daniel.””
She took a deep breath.
“Thomas discovered Daniel was using the company to hide illegal financial deals.””
“Why didn’t he tell me?””
“Because he thought Daniel would come after you.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“And Maya?””
Mrs. Patterson nodded.
“Thomas trusted her with the final piece of evidence.””
My heart sank.
“She’s thirteen.””
“I know.””
“Why would he do that?””
“Because he didn’t have anyone else.””
The words hurt because they sounded true.
Then Maya came back downstairs.
She held something in her hand.
“Mom.””
I turned.
“What is it?””
She walked over slowly.
“I didn’t tell you everything.””
My stomach tightened.
“What else?””
She handed me a small flash drive.
“I found this in Dad’s old office before Daniel took everything.””
Mrs. Patterson stood immediately.
“Maya, you should not have kept that.””
“I didn’t know who to trust.””
That sentence broke my heart.
My daughter had been living in fear.
And I had been asking why she was acting distant.
I took the flash drive.
“What’s on it?””
Maya looked at Mrs. Patterson.
Then at me.
“Dad recorded something.””
We found an old laptop in Mrs. Patterson’s basement.
The video file opened slowly.
The screen flickered.
Then Thomas appeared.
My breath caught.
He looked tired.
Scared.
But alive.
“Renee,” he said into the camera.
I covered my mouth.
“If you’re watching this, Daniel found out.””
Tears filled my eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
The video continued.
“Everything I discovered points to one person. Someone I trusted.””
The screen froze for a second.
Then Thomas said the words that changed everything.
“Daniel didn’t act alone.””
I leaned closer.
The video glitched.
A second later, another face appeared in the corner of the recording.
A person standing beside Thomas.
A person who had helped him record the confession.
A person who had known the truth from the beginning.
And then Thomas said:
“Renee, the person helping me is the same person who will betray you next.””
The video ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Maya whispered:
“Mom…”
I looked at the frozen screen.
Because I recognized the person beside my husband.
And I finally understood why Daniel had never been afraid.
He wasn’t hiding from us.
May you like
He was waiting for us to discover the truth.
The truth about the person standing closest to our family.
