Chapter 11: The Lie I Lived In

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Not Claire.

Not Daniel.

Not even Maya.

The only sound in the basement was the faint hum of the old furnace behind the wall.

I stared at Daniel.

The man who had terrified my daughter.

The man who had broken into my home.

The man who had been hunting for evidence.

And somehow, he was telling me my husband had been investigating me.

“No,” I whispered.

Daniel didn’t look angry.

He looked exhausted.

“I knew you wouldn’t believe me.””

“You expect me to believe the man who threatened my child?””

His jaw tightened.

“I never wanted to hurt Maya.””

“You came into her bedroom.””

“Because she had something Thomas left behind.””

“You scared her.””

“I scared her because I was desperate.””

I stepped forward.

“Desperate people say anything.””

Claire crossed her arms.

“Renee, he’s telling the truth.””

I turned toward her.

“That means nothing coming from you.””

For the first time, Claire looked offended.

Good.

She deserved to feel something.

Maya moved closer to me.

“Mom, why would Dad investigate you?””

I looked at her.

“I don’t know.””

But deep down, a terrible feeling was forming.

Because Thomas had always trusted me.

Hadn’t he?

Daniel reached into his coat and pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this after Thomas died.””

He placed it on the table.

“My name is on it,” I said.

He nodded.

“Because Thomas wrote it for you.””

I didn’t move.

“Why didn’t you give it to me?””

“Because I didn’t know if you were involved.””

The anger returned.

“You thought I killed my own husband?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at Maya.

“I thought someone had convinced you to help them.””

The room became silent.

Claire spoke quietly.

“Open it.””

I looked at her.

“You want me to?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because once you read it, you’ll understand why Thomas was afraid.””

My fingers shook as I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single page.

Thomas’s handwriting.

The sight of it nearly broke me.

*Renee,*

*If you’re reading this, I’m sorry. I’m sorry that I made you doubt yourself. I’m sorry that I let you believe our marriage fell apart because we stopped loving each other.*

I swallowed.

Maya held my arm.

*The truth is, I discovered something about our finances. Someone had been using your identity to hide money.*

I looked up.

“That’s impossible.””

Daniel said nothing.

I continued.

*At first, I thought you were involved. I hated myself for thinking that. But the evidence kept pointing back to you.*

My heart cracked.

Thomas had suspected me.

*Then I found something that changed everything.*

I turned the page.

*Someone had been manipulating both of us. They wanted me to believe you betrayed me. They wanted you to believe I abandoned you.*

My breathing slowed.

Because that sounded exactly like what had happened.

The divorce.

The resentment.

The distance.

All of it.

*The person behind this is someone we both trusted.*

The page ended there.

No name.

No answer.

I looked at Daniel.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“I knew Thomas was close to exposing them.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ethan spoke.

“I think I know.””

Everyone turned.

My brother looked destroyed.

“I wasn’t working with Daniel because I wanted money.””

Claire laughed.

“Don’t start pretending you’re innocent.””

Ethan ignored her.

“I was trying to find out who was using me.””

My voice was cold.

“You still lied.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because the person controlling everything threatened Maya.””

Maya froze.

“What?””

Ethan looked at her.

“They knew Thomas had trusted you with the evidence.””

I stared at my brother.

“Who threatened you?””

Ethan looked toward Claire.

Then Daniel.

Then me.

“I never saw their face.””

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

It wasn’t ours.

It was Claire’s.

She looked at the screen.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

She looked afraid.
