Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Wall
For a moment, nobody moved.
The man inside Maya’s room was silent.
Maya was silent.
And I was trapped beneath the bed, trying to understand how my elderly neighbor had just walked into my house at the exact moment everything fell apart.
“Renee?”” Mrs. Patterson called again.
The man stepped toward the door.
I saw his boots turn.
“Maya,” he whispered, “you called someone?””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
But then Mrs. Patterson appeared in the doorway.
The moment she saw the man, her face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“Oh my God,” she whispered.
The man’s expression hardened.
“You need to leave.””
Mrs. Patterson didn’t move.
“I knew it.””
My heart pounded.
Knew what?
“Maya,” she said softly, “how long has he been coming here?””
Maya looked down.
“Mrs. Patterson…”
“How long?””
The girl said nothing.
The man stepped between them.
“This has nothing to do with you.””
Mrs. Patterson looked at him with a fear I had never seen before.
“Yes, it does.””
The room felt frozen.
Then the man noticed something on the floor.
My phone.
I had accidentally pushed it forward when I grabbed it.
His eyes moved downward.
He saw it.
He knew someone was under the bed.
My blood turned cold.
“Renee.””
The way he said my name made my entire body tense.
He knew.
The man crouched.
Slowly.
The darkness beneath the bed disappeared as his face came closer.
I saw him.
A man in his late forties.
Gray hair.
A scar across his cheek.
Cold eyes.
And the strangest part?
I recognized him.
Not personally.
But from somewhere.
A photograph.
An old photograph Maya kept hidden.
He smiled.
Not kindly.
“You should have stayed at work.””
I crawled out from under the bed before he could reach me.
I grabbed Maya’s hand and pulled her behind me.
“Who are you?””
The man stood.
“I think you know.””
“No. I don’t.””
Mrs. Patterson stepped forward.
“His name is Daniel Voss.””
The name meant nothing.
Until Maya whispered:
“Mom…”
I looked at her.
“What?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He was Dad’s business partner.””
The room spun.
My ex-husband, Thomas, had died eighteen months earlier from a heart condition.
He left behind debt, unanswered questions, and a daughter who rarely spoke about him.
But Daniel Voss?
I had never heard that name.
“What does he want?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
That terrified me more than anything.
Daniel looked at Maya.
“You’ve made this much harder than it needed to be.””
“You’re the one who came into our house,” I said.
He smiled.
“Your house?””
Then he laughed.
“You really don’t know anything, do you?””
Maya grabbed my arm.
“Mom, we need to go.””
We moved toward the door.
Daniel didn’t stop us.
That scared me.
Because people who are truly dangerous don’t always need to chase you.
Sometimes they let you run.
Outside, I pulled Maya into the car.
Mrs. Patterson followed.
I locked the doors immediately.
“Maya,” I said, turning toward her.
“Start talking.””
She looked out the window.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what?””
She wiped tears from her face.
“From Dad.””
I froze.
“What?””
She shook her head.
“Not from him. From what he left behind.””
I stared at her.
“What did your father leave behind?””
Maya reached into her backpack.
She pulled out a small envelope.
My name was written on it.
But the handwriting wasn’t Thomas’s.
It was mine.
I stared at the envelope.
Because I had never written it.

Then Maya whispered:
“Dad told me never to give this to you unless Daniel found me.””
