Chapter 13: The Mother I Lost Twice

I spent my entire childhood believing my mother was gone.

The official story was simple.

A car accident.

A rainy road.

A life ended too soon.

My father raised me alone after that.

Then, years later, Thomas became my family.

And now, standing in that basement, I learned the biggest lie of my life.

My mother was alive.

And she had been watching.

“Where is she?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I turned toward Claire.

“You know.””

Claire looked away.

“Where is she?””

“She’ll come when she’s ready.””

I stepped closer.

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“You don’t get to protect her anymore.””

Daniel watched me carefully.

“You need to understand something.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“Your mother was the beginning.””

The words chilled me.

“The beginning of what?””

“The companies. The money. The identity theft.””

I shook my head.

“My mother wasn’t like that.””

Daniel sighed.

“Thomas believed the same thing.””

The mention of my husband hurt.

“What happened to him?””

Daniel looked down.

“He discovered your mother wasn’t dead.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“He found records. Bank accounts. Property under different names.””

“Why didn’t he tell me?””

“Because he didn’t know if you knew.””

I felt sick.

Thomas had been trapped.

He loved me.

But he suspected me.

Because everyone around us had been manipulating the truth.

Then Ethan spoke.

“Thomas called me the night he died.””

I turned.

“What did he say?””

Ethan swallowed.

“He said, ‘If Renee learns the truth, she’ll hate herself.’”

Tears filled my eyes.

Even at the end, Thomas was protecting me.

Not accusing me.

Protecting me.

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

This time, nobody spoke.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Careful.

Someone was entering the house.

Daniel reached for the basement door.

“Don’t.””

I grabbed his arm.

“We’re done running.””

I walked upstairs.

Everyone followed.

The living room lights were off.

Then a figure stepped from the shadows.

An older woman.

Silver hair.

A familiar face.

My knees almost collapsed.

“Mom?””

Evelyn Holloway looked exactly like the photographs.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

She looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I couldn’t move.

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“You let me bury you.””

“I had no choice.””

“You always had a choice.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to keep you away from the danger.””

“By abandoning me?””

She looked broken.

“I thought distance would protect you.””

I laughed.

“Do you know what it feels like to lose your mother?””

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

She looked at me.

“I watched you lose me.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded like pain.

Not an excuse.

But pain.

“Why?””

She sat down.

“Because I discovered what your father was doing.””

I froze.

“My father?””

Another secret.

Another wound.

Evelyn nodded.

“Our family was built on lies.””

Maya whispered:

“Everyone knew except us.””

My mother looked at her.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“Not everyone.””

She looked at me.

“Your husband was the only person who tried to fix it.””

I swallowed.

“Then who killed him?””

My mother’s face changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

May you like

And she whispered:

“The person who has been protecting you since the day Thomas died.””
