Chapter 4: The Letter I Was Never Meant To Read

I held the envelope in my hands for almost a full minute.

I couldn’t open it.

Not because I didn’t want to know.

Because I was afraid I already knew.

My daughter had spent weeks carrying something connected to her father. Something dangerous enough that a stranger was breaking into our house.

And she had been carrying it alone.

“Maya,” I whispered, “why didn’t you tell me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because Dad told me you would try to fix everything.””

“That’s what mothers do.””

“I know.””

“Then why hide it?””

She looked down.

“Because he told me you were safer not knowing.””

The words hurt.

My husband had been gone for eighteen months, but somehow he was still keeping secrets from me.

We drove to Mrs. Patterson’s house because it was the only place Daniel wouldn’t expect us to go.

Inside, she locked every door.

Then she looked at Maya.

“I’m sorry.””

Maya swallowed.

“You knew?””

Mrs. Patterson nodded.

“I knew your father was involved in something before he passed.””

I stared at her.

“You knew?””

“I tried to warn him.””

“About what?””

She looked at the envelope.

“About the company.””

Thomas had owned a small construction business. At least, that was what I thought.

He had always complained about contracts, deadlines, and difficult clients.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing suspicious.

“Thomas wasn’t just building houses,” Mrs. Patterson said quietly.

“He was investigating someone.””

“Who?””

She looked at me.

“Daniel Voss.””

The room went silent.

Maya opened the envelope.

Inside was a letter.

My hands shook as I unfolded it.

The handwriting was mine.

But the words weren’t.

*Renee,*

*If you’re reading this, it means I failed to keep you away from the truth.*

I stopped.

My eyes burned.

Thomas’s voice appeared in my mind.

His laugh.

The way he used to dance badly in the kitchen just to make Maya smile.

I continued reading.

*Daniel is not the man he pretends to be. He has been stealing money from the company for years. I found evidence.*

My heart raced.

*But the evidence is only part of the problem. Daniel knows I have it.*

I looked at Maya.

She was crying silently.

*If anything happens to me, do not trust anyone who says they are helping you. They may be trying to find what I hid.*

The letter ended with one sentence.

A sentence that made my hands go numb.

*The person who can prove everything is someone you already know.*

I looked up.

“Who?””

Maya shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then a man’s voice said:

“Renee, if you want your daughter to stay alive, stop reading that letter.””

My blood went cold.

I stood up.

“Who is this?””

The man laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand what your husband did.””

The call ended.

And immediately, another notification appeared.

A photo.

Someone had sent me a picture.

It showed Maya leaving school yesterday.

Standing beside Daniel Voss.

But behind them was someone else.

May you like

Someone I knew.

Someone I trusted.
