Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Bloodline
Michael stood in the middle of the living room, staring at Sarah.
"Tell me.""
She looked toward the girls.
"Not in front of them.""
"Tell me now.""
Sarah wiped her face.
"Please, Michael.""
He turned to the child protection worker.
"Can you take Lily and Abigail somewhere safe?""
The worker nodded.
"Of course.""
Lily immediately grabbed his hand.
"Daddy, are you leaving?""
Michael crouched.
"I need to find someone, sweetheart. But I'll come back.""
"Promise?""
He kissed her forehead.
"Always.""
Abigail approached slowly.
"Will you bring Mommy back?""
Michael looked at Sarah.
"Yes.""
Sarah's eyes filled.
The worker escorted the girls into another room.
When they were gone, Michael turned toward his wife.
"What did Richard mean?""
Sarah sat down.
For several seconds, she couldn't speak.
Then she opened her handbag and removed a folded hospital document.
"I found this after Lily was born.""
Michael took it.
It was a newborn screening report.
The baby's name was Lily Carter.
But a handwritten note appeared beneath the medical information.
*PATERNITY TEST REQUESTED — RESULTS WITHHELD.*
Michael looked up.
"Why was there a paternity test?""
Sarah began crying.
"Because Richard told me Lily wasn't yours.""
Michael stared.
"Was she?""
"Yes.""
"How do you know?""
"Because I had another test done privately.""
She handed him a second document.
This one was a DNA report from an independent laboratory.
Michael read the conclusion.
Probability of paternity: 99.99%.
He looked at Sarah.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because Richard threatened to use the first report to take Lily away. He told me that your father would believe him.""
Michael shook his head.
"Why would he say that?""
"Because he had altered the original sample.""
Michael felt his stomach tighten.
"How?""
"One of the hospital technicians was working with him. Richard wanted to make it appear that you weren't Lily's biological father.""
Michael looked down at the report.
"Why?""
Sarah swallowed.
"Because if Lily wasn't your biological child, she would have no claim to the Carter inheritance.""
Michael stared at her.
"And you knew this all along?""
"Yes.""
"Then why did you disappear?""
Sarah closed her eyes.
"Because Richard found out about the second test.""
She began speaking faster.
"He came to see me the night before the accident. He said if I didn't surrender the documents, he would make sure Lily was taken from me.""
Michael felt his anger rising.
"What happened that night?""
Sarah looked directly at him.
"I was driving home when someone followed me. They forced my car off the road.""
Michael remembered the police report.
The burned vehicle.
The unidentified driver.
The closed coffin.
"How did you survive?""
"Your father had arranged for someone to follow me. He got me out before the car caught fire.""
Michael stared.
"So my father saved you?""
"Yes. But he made me disappear.""
"Why?""
"Because he believed Richard would keep coming after me.""
Michael sat down.
"Why didn't you contact me?""
Sarah's voice broke.
"Because Robert told me you had agreed to let Richard handle everything. He showed me documents with your signature.""
Michael closed his eyes.
The forged signatures.
The trust authorization.
The false custody order.
The same pattern repeated again and again.
"Did my father know Richard was doing all this?""
"He knew some of it. He didn't know everything.""
Michael stood.
"Where did you go?""
"To a safe house in Vermont. Robert paid for it through Evelyn's company.""
"Northbridge?""
Sarah nodded.
Michael laughed bitterly.
"So the same company used to steal from Lily's trust was also paying to hide you?""
"Yes.""
He walked toward the window.
His father had built an entire system of secrets.
And everyone had been forced to live inside it.
"Why did you come back now?""
Sarah looked at him.
"Because Vanessa told me Richard planned to remove Lily from your custody permanently. She said the transfer would happen once you signed the guardianship papers.""
Michael turned.
"Vanessa warned you?""
Sarah nodded.
"She wanted to use me against Richard.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard had been stealing from her, too.""
Michael stared.
For years, Vanessa had appeared to be the mastermind.
But now it seemed she had been fighting for control of a scheme she didn't fully understand.
"Where does Evelyn fit into all this?""
Sarah looked down.
"Evelyn was the person who arranged the first transfer. She helped Richard conceal Abigail. Later, she became involved with your father's estate.""
"Was she his mistress?""
Sarah nodded.
Michael felt disgusted.
"My father was involved with Evelyn?""
"Yes.""
"And she had Richard's child?""
"Yes.""
He rubbed his forehead.
"This family is impossible.""
Sarah reached for his hand.
"Michael, I know I've hurt you.""
He pulled away.
"You let me mourn you for two years.""
"I was trying to keep Lily safe.""
"And I was trying to raise her without knowing my wife was alive.""
Sarah began crying again.
"I know.""
Michael's phone rang.
Patricia.
He answered.
"Have you found Mrs. Collins?""
"Not yet. Police are on their way to the old estate.""
"Richard has her.""
"We know. But Michael, there's something important.""
"What?""
"I found the original guardianship records.""
"Where?""
"In a storage facility connected to Northbridge.""
"And?""
Patricia took a breath.
"The records show that Abigail was never legally adopted by Richard.""
Michael closed his eyes.
"I already suspected that.""
"There's more. The adoption papers list a second guardian.""
"Who?""
"Your father.""
Michael froze.
"What?""
"Robert Carter was listed as the child's legal guardian from birth.""
Michael stared at Sarah.
"How?""
Patricia continued.
"Your father apparently signed an agreement acknowledging responsibility for Abigail. But he didn't sign as her grandfather.""
Michael's voice dropped.
"What did he sign as?""
Patricia hesitated.
"Her father.""
The room went silent.
Michael looked at Sarah.
She shook her head immediately.
"No.""
Patricia continued.
"According to these records, Robert claimed paternity of Abigail.""
Michael felt the world tilt.
His father had been more than a grandfather to the children.
He had been listed as Abigail's father.
Sarah stepped closer.
"That's impossible. Richard is her biological father.""
"Then why would Robert sign the document?""
Michael looked at the DNA report.
"Patricia, can you verify the biological relationships of all three children?""
"Yes. But we need samples.""
"Arrange it.""
"I've already contacted a laboratory.""
Michael looked toward the hallway.
The children were safe.
But Mrs. Collins wasn't.
"What's happening at the estate?""
Patricia's voice became urgent.
"Michael, don't go there. The police are approaching the property.""
He looked at the clock.
"How long?""
"Ten minutes.""
"That's too long.""
"Michael—"
He ended the call.
Sarah grabbed his arm.
"Don't go.""
"She's been protecting the children.""
"And Richard knows that. That's why he wants you there.""
Michael took his coat.
"Then I'll bring someone with me.""
He called Daniel Brooks.
Within minutes, Daniel arrived with a security driver.
They drove toward the old Carter estate.
The building stood at the end of a narrow road surrounded by bare trees.
It had once been a grand country house.
Now its windows were boarded, its gardens overgrown.
Michael recognized the side entrance.
His father had used it for private meetings.
They entered carefully.
A light was visible beneath the basement door.
Michael heard voices.
Richard's first.
"Where are the original papers?""
Mrs. Collins replied weakly.
"I don't have them.""
Evelyn laughed.
"You expect us to believe that?""
"I burned them.""
A sharp slap followed.
Michael clenched his fists.
He moved toward the basement.
Then Richard spoke again.
"You've been protecting Emma for seventeen years. You should have thought about what would happen when she learned who her father really was.""
Mrs. Collins began crying.
"She already knows.""
Silence.
"What?""
"She knows everything.""
Michael stopped.
Richard's voice turned cold.
"That's impossible.""
Mrs. Collins laughed through her tears.
"She found the letters. She knows about the money. She knows why you abandoned her.""
Evelyn whispered something.
Then Richard shouted.
"Where is she?""
Mrs. Collins answered:
"With the only man who ever treated her like family.""
Michael's phone vibrated.
A message from Daniel.
*I FOUND EMMA. SHE'S SAFE. BUT THERE'S SOMETHING YOU NEED TO SEE.*
A photograph followed.
It showed Emma standing beside an elderly woman.
The woman was holding a folder.
Michael recognized her immediately.
Helen Carter.
His mother.
The woman who had supposedly died when he was twelve.
He stared at the screen.
Then he heard Richard's voice from the basement.
"Robert should never have told Michael about Helen.""
Michael's heart pounded.
Richard continued.
"Because if Michael discovers who actually gave birth to him, the entire inheritance arrangement collapses.""
Michael slowly looked toward the basement door.
For the second time in two years, the foundations of his identity were being ripped away.
His father might not have been his biological father.
His mother might not have been dead.
And the people he had trusted had been rewriting his family history since before Lily was born.
He pushed open the basement door.
Richard turned.
His face went white.
"Michael.""
Michael stepped into the room.
"Where is Mrs. Collins?""
Richard glanced toward Evelyn.
Then he smiled.
"Before we discuss her, there's something you need to know.""
Michael looked at the frightened housekeeper.
"Get her out of here.""
Daniel moved toward Mrs. Collins.
Richard didn't stop him.
Instead, he reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.
"Your father wasn't the only Carter who kept secrets.""
He placed it on the table.
"Your birth certificate was changed.""
Michael stared at the paper.
Richard leaned closer.
"You're not Robert Carter's biological son, Michael.""
Then he delivered the final blow.
"You're the son of the man who has been financing this entire operation.""
Michael looked at the name printed on the document.
May you like
And recognized it.
*Richard Hayes.*
