Chapter 5: The Daughter Nobody Was Allowed to Remember

Michael couldn't hear anything for several seconds.

Our first daughter.

The words seemed to hang in the air.

He looked at Sarah, searching her face for some indication that she was confused or lying.

"How many children did we have, Sarah?""

She wiped her cheek.

"Two.""

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because your father made sure you never knew.""

Vanessa placed the custody document on the table.

"Don't look so shocked, Michael. You should be thanking me. I've spent years cleaning up the mess your wife created.""

Michael moved toward Lily.

"Come here, sweetheart.""

Lily ran into his arms.

He lifted her and held her tightly.

Vanessa didn't stop him.

Instead, she poured herself a glass of water.

"Now that we're all together, perhaps we should discuss the inheritance.""

Michael stared at her.

"You kidnapped my daughter.""

"I brought her somewhere safe.""

"Without my permission.""

"Your permission is precisely what Richard has been trying to obtain.""

Sarah stood.

"Stop lying, Vanessa.""

Vanessa turned.

"Sit down.""

"No.""

For the first time, Michael saw genuine fear in Sarah's expression.

Not fear of Vanessa.

Fear of what Vanessa might reveal.

Michael gently placed Lily behind him.

"Sarah, start talking. From the beginning.""

Sarah looked at the floor.

"Before Lily was born, I was pregnant with another child. A little girl. Your father knew about the pregnancy.""

Michael frowned.

"Why would my father know?""

"Because I was working for him at the time. I had discovered financial irregularities in one of his companies. When I told him I was pregnant, he offered to help me.""

"Help you how?""

"He arranged private medical care, an apartment, and financial support. He said he wanted to protect his grandchild.""

Vanessa laughed.

"That isn't what happened.""

Sarah turned toward her.

"You were there. You know exactly what happened.""

Michael looked between them.

"Where was I?""

"Traveling," Sarah answered.

"Your father sent you overseas for a business expansion. While you were gone, he convinced me that the baby would be safer away from the family.""

Michael's voice hardened.

"And you believed him?""

"I was twenty-six, Michael. I had just discovered that someone had been moving money through accounts connected to your father. He told me that if I exposed him, the baby would be taken from me.""

She pulled a chair closer and sat down.

"He arranged for the birth to happen at a private clinic. I wasn't allowed to contact my family. After the delivery, they told me the baby had complications.""

Michael stared.

"What complications?""

"They told me she died.""

A terrible silence filled the room.

Sarah continued.

"I never saw a body. I never received proper medical records. Your father said the hospital had handled everything.""

Michael felt sick.

"Then what happened?""

"Three months later, I received a photograph.""

Sarah opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.

On the back was a handwritten date.

Michael stared at the tiny face.

"Who is she?""

Sarah began crying.

"Our daughter.""

He took the photograph.

The baby had a small birthmark near her left eyebrow.

"Where is she now?""

Sarah looked at Vanessa.

"That's the question I've been asking for seven years.""

Vanessa calmly placed her glass on the table.

"She is alive.""

Michael stepped forward.

"Where?""

"That depends.""

"On what?""

"Whether you're willing to stop this investigation.""

Michael laughed bitterly.

"You think you can negotiate with me?""

Vanessa opened a folder.

Inside were copies of bank records, custody agreements, and several documents bearing Michael's signature.

"Your father established a separate account for the first child. It was funded with $1.8 million.""

Michael looked at the paperwork.

"Where is the money?""

"Under the control of the family trust.""

"Then why have you been stealing from Lily?""

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

"Because Lily's trust was never supposed to be the primary inheritance.""

Sarah stood abruptly.

"That's not true!""

Vanessa turned toward her.

"You know what your husband did.""

Michael looked at Sarah.

"What did my father do?""

Sarah swallowed.

"Your father created a second trust. He named the first child as its primary beneficiary. Lily was supposed to receive the remaining assets.""

Michael looked down at the papers.

"Then why was the money being transferred to Northbridge?""

Vanessa's expression changed.

For the first time, she seemed to realize he had uncovered more than she expected.

"Because the original trust was compromised.""

"By whom?""

"Your father.""

Michael shook his head.

"You're telling me Robert Carter stole from his own grandchildren?""

Vanessa smiled faintly.

"Your father believed he was protecting the family.""

Sarah stepped forward.

"He was protecting himself.""

Vanessa slapped the table.

"Enough!""

Lily flinched.

Michael immediately turned.

"Don't raise your voice around my daughter.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"You have no idea what your father left behind.""

"Then tell me.""

She leaned forward.

"Your father knew the first child wasn't yours.""

Michael froze.

Sarah covered her mouth.

"What?""

Vanessa continued.

"The baby was conceived before your marriage. Sarah was involved with another man.""

Michael turned toward his wife.

"Is that true?""

Sarah's eyes filled.

"Yes.""

He felt something inside him collapse.

"Who?""

Sarah shook her head.

"I can't.""

"Who was the father?""

Vanessa answered for her.

"Richard Hayes.""

Michael stared.

The man who had managed his father's estate.

The man who had witnessed Lily's forged signatures.

The man who had attempted to transfer $250,000.

Richard was the father of Sarah's first child.

Michael looked at Sarah.

"You had a child with my attorney?""

"It happened before Lily was born," Sarah whispered.

"I was confused. Richard promised me he would help.""

"And then?""

"He disappeared.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Not disappeared. He was paid.""

Michael turned.

"By my father?""

Vanessa nodded.

"Twenty-five thousand dollars. The same amount you've been investigating.""

Suddenly, the strange transfer made sense.

Or at least part of it.

Richard had been paid to conceal a child.

But why was money still moving through Northbridge?

Michael looked at Vanessa.

"What are you getting out of this?""

Her expression hardened.

"Control.""

"Of what?""

"The Carter estate. The properties. The businesses.

The trusts. Everything your father built.""

"You're stealing from children to control an estate?""

Vanessa leaned back.

"Children grow up. Adults make decisions. Your father knew that.""

Sarah moved closer to Michael.

"She's not telling you everything.""

Vanessa laughed.

"Of course I'm not.""

Then she pulled another document from her folder.

It was a birth certificate.

Michael picked it up.

The mother's name was Sarah Carter.

The father's name was Richard Hayes.

The child's name was Abigail Hayes.

But the date of birth was missing.

Instead, there was a handwritten note.

*TRANSFERRED TO CARTER FAMILY CARE — 2019.*

Michael looked up.

"What is Carter Family Care?""

Vanessa smiled.

"An organization your father established to handle private family arrangements.""

Sarah began shaking.

"Michael, don't believe her.""

Vanessa ignored her.

"Your father created the organization after discovering that the first child had been placed with another family. He wanted the child brought back into the Carter family.""

"Where is Abigail?""

Vanessa stood.

"She's closer than you think.""

Before Michael could ask another question, the front door opened.

A young woman entered.

She appeared to be around eight years old, with dark hair, a yellow sweater, and a small birthmark near her left eyebrow.

Michael stopped breathing.

The girl looked at Sarah.

Then at him.

And finally at Vanessa.

"Grandma," she said quietly, "is this the man I'm supposed to call Daddy?""

Michael felt Lily's hand tighten around his fingers.

Sarah began sobbing.

The little girl took one step toward Michael.

May you like

Then she said something that made Vanessa's expression turn murderous.

"You're not my real father. Richard told me.""
