Chapter 2: The Twenty-Five Thousand Dollar Secret

Michael didn't sleep that night.

At 2:17 a.m., he sat alone in his home office with three cups of cold coffee, Lily's practice sheets, and the bank's authorization email open on his computer.

The transfer request was dated six days earlier.

The destination account belonged to a company called Northbridge Asset Holdings.

Michael had never heard of it.

He called his bank's fraud department.

A tired employee answered after several rings.

"Good morning. How may I help you?""

"This is Michael Carter. I need an immediate freeze on any pending transactions involving my daughter's trust.""

"Certainly, sir. May I have the account reference?""

He provided it.

There was a pause.

"Mr. Carter, I'm seeing a pending authorization request for two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""

"Did the transfer go through?""

"Not yet. It was flagged for additional verification.""

"Who submitted it?""

The employee hesitated.

"The request was submitted through your legal representative's account.""

"Richard Hayes?""

"Yes, sir.""

Michael closed his eyes.

"Freeze everything. No withdrawals, no changes, no new beneficiaries. Nothing without my direct authorization.""

"Understood. I'll escalate this immediately.""

When he ended the call, he stared at Richard's name.

For twelve years, Richard had been more than an attorney.

He had represented Michael's father, helped settle Sarah's estate, and stood beside Michael at the funeral.

After Sarah died, Richard had personally assured him that Lily's future was protected.

Michael remembered the conversation.

They had stood outside the cemetery in the freezing rain.

Richard had placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Your daughter will never have to worry about money, Michael. Sarah made sure of that.""

Now the same man was trying to move a quarter of a million dollars out of her trust.

At seven in the morning, Michael called his assistant, Daniel Brooks.

"Cancel my meetings for the next three days.""

"All of them?""

"Every single one.""

"Is everything okay?""

"No. And I need you to find out everything you can about Northbridge Asset Holdings.""

Daniel paused.

"That's not one of our companies, is it?""

"No.""

"Understood.""

Michael went upstairs to check on Lily.

She was awake, sitting on the carpet and arranging her stuffed animals.

When he entered, she quickly hid something behind her back.

"What are you doing, sweetheart?""

"Nothing.""

He sat beside her.

"You don't have to hide things from me.""

She slowly revealed a small notebook.

Its pages were filled with handwriting exercises.

A date appeared at the top of each page.

The first was from three months earlier.

Michael's stomach tightened.

"Have you been doing this for three months?""

Lily nodded.

"Grandma said I had to practice until my writing looked like yours.""

"Did she explain why?""

"She said it was a game.""

"What happened if you didn't do it?""

Lily looked down.

"She took away my dinner.""

Michael felt a wave of anger so strong he had to look away.

He gently took her hand.

"Nobody is allowed to punish you for making a mistake. Not Grandma, not anybody.""

Lily leaned against him.

"Can I have toast?""

Michael almost broke down.

"Of course.""

He carried her downstairs.

While Lily ate, he noticed a small bruise near her elbow.

"What happened there?""

She pulled her sleeve down.

"I dropped a glass.""

"Did somebody hurt you?""

"No.""

"Did Vanessa?""

Lily stopped chewing.

Then she whispered, "She grabbed me.""

Michael immediately called their pediatrician.

Within an hour, he had arranged a medical examination and a meeting with a child welfare specialist.

He also contacted an independent family attorney.

He would not allow Richard or Vanessa anywhere near the investigation.

At 10:30 a.m., Daniel arrived carrying a thick folder.

"I found Northbridge," he said.

Michael looked up.

"Who owns it?""

"That's the strange part. The company was registered eight months ago. Its listed manager is a woman named Evelyn Shaw.""

"Do we know her?""

Daniel placed a photograph on the desk.

Michael stared.

He recognized her.

Evelyn Shaw had worked as a financial administrator for his late father, Robert Carter.

She had left the company shortly before Robert's death.

"Why would Evelyn be connected to Lily's trust?""

Daniel opened the folder.

"Because Northbridge received a transfer from your father's estate three weeks after the funeral.""

"How much?""

"Twenty-five thousand dollars.""

Michael looked at the figure.

"Who authorized it?""

"Richard Hayes.""

Michael stood.

"That's not possible. Richard told me the estate was settled.""

"Apparently, it wasn't.""

Daniel pulled out another document.

"This transfer was recorded as an administrative expense.""

"Twenty-five thousand dollars in administrative expenses?""

"That's what they called it.""

Michael walked toward the window.

His father had died nearly two years earlier.

At the time, Richard had told him that the estate was straightforward. The house, investments, and business holdings were divided according to Robert's will.

Sarah had been given a substantial inheritance, which was placed into a protected trust for Lily.

But now the numbers were beginning to look different.

"Find every transaction Richard made after my father's death," Michael said.

Daniel nodded.

"There's something else.""

He placed a second document on the desk.

"Your father's will was amended shortly before he died.""

Michael turned.

"What?""

"An amendment was filed four days before his death. It changed the person responsible for overseeing the family trust.""

"Who?""

Daniel slid the document forward.

"Vanessa.""

Michael stared at the signature.

His father's name appeared at the bottom.

But the handwriting looked unusually shaky.

"Did my father sign this?""

"That's what the document says.""

Michael read the amendment again.

It gave Vanessa authority to recommend changes to the administration of Lily's trust under certain circumstances.

He felt sick.

"Why didn't Richard tell me?""

Daniel didn't answer.

Michael called his new attorney, Patricia Morgan, who had been recommended by a business associate.

She arrived that afternoon.

Patricia was in her early fifties, with silver-streaked hair and a habit of reading every document twice before speaking.

After examining the papers, she looked up.

"Michael, I need you to understand something.""

"What?""

"The attempted transfer is only one part of this.""

She tapped the will amendment.

"If this document is genuine, Vanessa may have had access to information about the trust that you didn't know she possessed.""

"And if it isn't genuine?""

"Then someone altered your father's estate documents.""

Michael leaned forward.

"Can you determine that?""

"I can arrange a forensic examination. But I also need the original records.""

"Richard has them.""

Patricia's expression changed.

"Then don't confront him until we know what we're dealing with.""

Michael nodded.

He told her about Lily's notebook, the practice signatures, and the restricted food basket.

Patricia's face tightened.

"Has Lily spoken to a child protection professional?""

"An appointment is arranged.""

"Good. Keep her away from Vanessa. And don't let anyone question her repeatedly about what happened.""

Michael looked at the document again.

"There's something else. I found a transfer for twenty-five thousand dollars.""

Patricia studied it.

"To Northbridge?""

"Yes.""

"That amount is interesting.""

"Why?""

She turned the document around.

"Because the payment was made on the same day your father changed his estate instructions.""

Michael felt the room grow colder.

Patricia circled a date.

"Someone was paying Evelyn Shaw while your father's estate was being reorganized.""

"Do you think she was bribed?""

"I think we need to find out what she knows.""

At 4:45 p.m., Michael drove to Richard Hayes's office.

He hadn't planned to confront him.

But he needed to see his face.

Richard's receptionist greeted him with a smile.

"Mr. Carter! Mr. Hayes wasn't expecting you.""

"That's fine. I'll wait.""

Five minutes later, Richard emerged from his office.

He was wearing his usual navy suit and expensive watch.

"Michael! What a surprise.""

"Can we talk?""

"Of course.""

They entered the office.

Richard closed the door.

"Everything all right?""

Michael placed a printed copy of the transfer authorization on his desk.

Richard glanced at it.

His smile faded.

"Where did you get this?""

"My bank.""

Richard sat down.

"Michael, there are certain administrative matters you may not understand.""

"Then explain them.""

"The trust requires periodic restructuring.""

"Why did you attempt to transfer $250,000?""

"It wasn't an unauthorized transfer.""

"Then why was my signature forged?""

Richard leaned back.

"That's a serious accusation.""

Michael placed Lily's practice sheet beside the authorization.

Richard stared at it.

For the first time, his expression revealed something close to fear.

"Where did you get that?""

"My daughter.""

Richard slowly removed his glasses.

"Michael, listen to me. Vanessa was trying to help.""

"By teaching a seven-year-old to imitate my signature?""

"You're misunderstanding the situation.""

"Then explain it.""

Richard lowered his voice.

"Your father left instructions that were never fully disclosed to you.""

Michael stepped closer.

"What instructions?""

Richard looked toward the closed door.

Then he whispered something that made Michael's blood run cold.

"Your father knew Vanessa wasn't Lily's only problem.""

Michael stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

Richard opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.

He placed it on the desk.

"Your father gave me this before he died. He told me not to open it unless someone attempted to access Lily's inheritance.""

Michael looked at the envelope.

His father's handwriting was on the front.

*FOR MICHAEL. ONLY IF VANESSA MAKES HER MOVE.*

He reached for it.

Richard suddenly placed his hand over the envelope.

"Before you read this, you need to understand something.""

"What?""

"Your father wasn't trying to protect Lily from Vanessa.""

Richard swallowed.

"He was trying to protect her from her mother.""

Michael felt the floor disappear beneath him.

"Sarah?""

Richard nodded.

May you like

Then he said the words Michael had never imagined hearing.

"Sarah didn't die the way you were told.""
