Chapter 6: The Girl Who Knew Too Much
The little girl stood in the doorway holding a worn pink backpack.
Michael couldn't take his eyes off her.
The birthmark.
The dark hair.
The shape of her eyes.
She looked so much like Sarah that it hurt.
"What's your name, sweetheart?"" he asked gently.
"Abigail.""
"How old are you?""
"Seven.""
Michael looked at Sarah.
She nodded through her tears.
"She's seven," Sarah whispered.
"She was born four months before Lily.""
Lily stepped out from behind her father.
"Is she my sister?""
Sarah knelt.
"Yes, baby.""
Lily looked at Abigail.
"Do you want to play with my dolls?""
Abigail didn't answer.
Instead, she looked toward Vanessa.
"Am I allowed?""
Michael felt another wave of anger.
"Of course you're allowed.""
Vanessa closed the folder.
"Michael, this is becoming unnecessarily emotional.""
He turned toward her.
"Get out.""
She raised an eyebrow.
"Excuse me?""
"Get out of this house. You're not taking either child anywhere.""
Vanessa laughed.
"You still don't understand. I have legal authority over the estate.""
"You have no authority over my daughters.""
"Your daughters?""
She pointed toward Abigail.
"That child is not yours.""
Michael looked at her.
"Then why did you spend seven years hiding her?""
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
Sarah moved toward Abigail.
"Come here, sweetheart.""
The little girl hesitated.
"Grandma said you left me.""
Sarah's face crumpled.
"I never wanted to leave you.""
"She said you didn't want me.""
"I wanted you more than anything.""
Abigail looked down.
"Then why didn't you come?""
Sarah reached for her, but Abigail stepped backward.
Michael watched the exchange with a growing sense of dread.
These children had been manipulated by adults for years.
Lily had been taught to fear food.
Abigail had been taught to fear her mother.
And both had been made to believe their father was someone who could not be trusted.
Michael turned toward Vanessa.
"How long has Abigail been living with you?""
"That is private.""
"Answer me.""
"She has lived in a supervised household.""
"Where?""
Vanessa said nothing.
Michael pulled out his phone.
"I'm calling Patricia.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Don't involve that woman.""
"Why?""
"Because she doesn't know the full story.""
"Then explain it.""
Vanessa walked toward the dining table and opened another folder.
"Your father arranged for Abigail to be raised by a family who understood the importance of discretion. The arrangement was legal.""
Sarah shook her head.
"It was never legal.""
Vanessa ignored her.
"After your father's death, the arrangement became complicated. The family wanted more money. Richard negotiated.""
Michael looked at Abigail.
"Did you live with another family?""
She nodded.
"Mr. and Mrs. Hayes.""
Michael went completely still.
"Richard raised you?""
Abigail looked at the floor.
"He said I was his daughter.""
Sarah covered her mouth.
Michael stared at Vanessa.
"You gave Richard his own daughter to raise?""
Vanessa smiled.
"Your father believed that was the safest solution.""
"Why?""
"Because Richard knew the truth.""
Michael felt his stomach tighten.
"What truth?""
Vanessa took a breath.
"Richard didn't simply have an affair with Sarah. He was involved in the financial scheme that led to your father's death.""
The room went silent.
Sarah stood abruptly.
"Vanessa, stop.""
Michael turned.
"What did you just say?""
Vanessa leaned against the table.
"Your father discovered that Richard and Sarah had been moving money out of his companies. He confronted them. A few weeks later, he died.""
Michael stared at her.
"My father died of a heart attack.""
"That's what the report says.""
Sarah looked terrified.
"Michael, your father was already ill.""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Your father was preparing to change his will. He planned to remove me from the trust and give everything to the children.""
Michael frowned.
"Then why didn't he?""
"Because Richard had other plans.""
She opened the folder and removed a photograph.
It showed Richard standing beside Robert Carter outside a hospital.
The date was printed underneath.
Three days before Robert's death.
Vanessa pointed to the photograph.
"Your father was being treated for a heart condition. Richard visited him that night.""
Michael examined the picture.
"What's your point?""
"Richard was the last person to see him alive.""
Sarah shook her head.
"That's not proof of anything.""
Vanessa smiled.
"No. But this might be.""
She removed a small USB drive.
"Your father recorded a conversation before he died.""
Michael stared at it.
"Where did you get that?""
"From his office.""
"Why didn't you give it to the police?""
"Because it contains information that would destroy the entire family.""
Michael reached for the drive.
Vanessa pulled it away.
"Not so fast.""
He looked at her.
"What do you want?""
"Control of Lily's trust. Full authority over the remaining estate. And a signed agreement confirming that neither child will make any claims against the Carter family businesses.""
Sarah stepped forward.
"You're trying to sell them their own inheritance!""
Vanessa turned.
"I'm trying to preserve what your irresponsible behavior nearly destroyed.""
Michael looked at the USB drive.
Then at the children.
He understood what Vanessa was doing.
She had brought Abigail here because she knew the revelation would destabilize him.
She wanted him confused, angry, and desperate enough to sign whatever she placed in front of him.
He slowly smiled.
Vanessa frowned.
"What's funny?""
"You think I'm still negotiating.""
Michael placed his phone on the table.
Patricia Morgan's voice came through the speaker.
"Michael, I'm recording this conversation with your consent. Are you safe?""
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Michael looked at her.
"Patricia has been listening since you started discussing the trust.""
Vanessa lunged toward the phone.
Michael moved it out of reach.
"Don't.""
A loud knock came from the front door.
Then another.
"Police! Open the door!""
Vanessa stepped backward.
"Michael, you have made a terrible mistake.""
"No. I made one mistake. I trusted you.""
Two officers entered the room.
One was Officer Bennett.
Michael recognized the silver watch immediately.
Bennett looked at him.
"Mr. Carter, we need you to come with us.""
Michael didn't move.
"Why?""
"We received a report alleging that you unlawfully removed a child from her legal guardian.""
Michael stared at him.
"Which child?""
"Abigail Hayes.""
Vanessa smiled.
Sarah began crying.
Michael looked at the officer.
"Abigail is my daughter.""
"That's not what the paperwork says.""
Bennett handed him a document.
It was an emergency guardianship order.
The guardian was listed as Richard Hayes.
The child's name was Abigail Hayes.
And the order had been signed that morning.
Michael looked at Vanessa.
"You arranged this.""
She shrugged.
"Richard is her legal father.""
Michael turned toward the officer.
"Then why did Vanessa bring her here?""
Bennett ignored the question.
"Mr. Carter, please step away from the child.""
Lily grabbed Michael's coat.
"Daddy, don't let them take my sister.""
Abigail began trembling.
"Please don't send me back.""
Michael crouched in front of her.
"Nobody is sending you anywhere without making sure you're safe.""
Bennett reached for his arm.
Then Patricia's voice came through the phone again.
"Officer Bennett, before you do anything, I suggest you check the authorization number on that guardianship order.""
Bennett frowned.
"Who is this?""
"Patricia Morgan. Attorney for Michael Carter.""
She read out the number.
There was a pause.
Bennett checked his tablet.
His expression changed.
"This order isn't in the court system.""
Vanessa's smile vanished.
Patricia continued.
"Because it was never issued by a judge. The signature belongs to a retired court clerk.""
Bennett looked at Vanessa.
"Ma'am, step away from the table.""
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
But before the officers could approach her, she threw the USB drive onto the floor.
It shattered beneath her heel.
Michael stared at the broken pieces.
"What have you done?""
Vanessa leaned close to him.
"Your father recorded everything, Michael.""
She whispered into his ear.
"But the recording isn't on that drive.""
Then she straightened and looked directly at Sarah.
"Tell him where the original is.""
Sarah went pale.
Michael turned.
"Sarah?""
She shook her head.
"I can't.""
"Why?""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Because the original recording is in the hospital where your father died.""
Michael stared.
"What hospital?""
Sarah whispered the name.
St. Mary's Medical Center.
Then she added something that made the officers stop moving.
"Your father didn't die from a heart attack.""
She looked toward Abigail.
"He was murdered because he discovered that Richard had been using his identity to create a second family.""
Michael's phone vibrated.
A new message had arrived from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of a hospital room.
On the bed lay an elderly man.
Alive.
May you like
And beneath the photograph were seven words:
*ROBERT CARTER IS WAITING TO SPEAK TO YOU.*
