Chapter 7: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Michael read the message three times.

The photograph showed an elderly man lying in a hospital bed, his face thinner than Michael remembered, but unmistakable.

Robert Carter.

His father.

The man whose funeral he had attended nearly two years earlier.

The man whose ashes he had scattered beside his mother's grave.

The man whose will had supposedly determined the fate of his entire family.

Alive.

Michael looked at Sarah.

"Is this real?""

She nodded slowly.

"I saw him six months ago.""

Michael felt his knees weaken.

"You knew?""

"I tried to tell you.""

"When?""

"Three weeks after his funeral.""

Michael stared at her.

"You called me every night for months. You could have told me!""

"I couldn't. Your father's people were monitoring everything.""

"His people?""

Sarah looked toward Vanessa.

"Richard. Vanessa. Evelyn. They were all involved.""

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"Don't listen to her. She's lost her mind.""

Officer Bennett stepped toward Vanessa.

"Ma'am, I need you to put your hands where I can see them.""

Vanessa raised both hands.

"Officer, this is a family dispute. You have no reason to detain me.""

Patricia's voice came through Michael's phone.

"Officer, I'm sending you documentation concerning the fraudulent guardianship order. You should also know that Mr. Carter's father may be alive. I recommend preserving this property and questioning everyone present.""

Bennett looked confused.

"Alive?""

Michael held up the photograph.

"Apparently.""

The officer examined it.

"Where was this taken?""

Sarah answered.

"St. Mary's Medical Center. Private rehabilitation wing.""

Bennett turned toward his partner.

"Call the hospital. Confirm whether Robert Carter is a patient.""

Vanessa suddenly moved toward the door.

"Enough of this nonsense.""

The second officer blocked her.

"Please remain where you are.""

Vanessa's face twisted.

"You have no idea who you're dealing with.""

"Then perhaps you should explain.""

She looked at Michael.

For the first time, there was no smugness in her expression.

Only hatred.

"You always were your father's favorite.""

Michael stepped closer.

"Where is he?""

Vanessa said nothing.

"Where is my father?""

She smiled bitterly.

"Ask Richard.""

Then she was taken outside.

Michael immediately arranged for Lily and Abigail to be examined by medical professionals and placed under temporary protective supervision.

He wanted to stay with them, but Patricia insisted that they first establish what was happening at the hospital.

"I'll meet you there," she promised.

"Don't confront anyone until we know who has access to your father's room.""

Michael looked at Sarah.

"You're coming with me.""

She nodded.

Before leaving, Lily grabbed his hand.

"Daddy?""

He crouched.

"Yes, sweetheart?""

"Is Grandpa going to be angry that we found him?""

Michael kissed her forehead.

"No, baby. Nobody gets to hurt you for asking questions.""

Abigail stood beside Lily, clutching her backpack.

"Will he know who I am?""

Michael looked at her.

"He's your grandfather. He should have known you from the beginning.""

The drive to St. Mary's took thirty-five minutes.

Michael spent every mile remembering his father's funeral.

The closed casket.

The black suits.

The pastor's speech.

Vanessa crying against his shoulder.

Richard handing him the final paperwork.

Had all of it been staged?

When they entered the hospital, Patricia was waiting near the reception desk.

She held a folder.

"I verified the photograph," she said.

"Robert Carter has been registered here under a private medical arrangement.""

Michael stared at her.

"Who paid for it?""

Patricia opened the folder.

"Northbridge Asset Holdings.""

Michael laughed without humor.

"Of course.""

"There's another issue. The hospital records show that Robert has been receiving visitors under restricted authorization.""

"Who?""

Patricia handed him a visitor log.

Three names appeared.

Vanessa Carter.

Richard Hayes.

Evelyn Shaw.

Michael looked at the dates.

Vanessa had visited eleven times.

Richard, seventeen.

Evelyn, twenty-three.

"Where is his room?""

"Fourth floor. Room 418.""

They took the elevator.

When the doors opened, a nurse approached.

"Can I help you?""

"I'm Michael Carter. I'm here to see Robert Carter.""

The nurse looked at a clipboard.

"Are you an approved visitor?""

"I'm his son.""

She hesitated.

"One moment, please.""

She disappeared into the nurses' station.

A few seconds later, an older physician approached.

"Mr. Carter?""

"Yes.""

"I'm Dr. Whitmore. Your father has been under our care for some time.""

Michael's jaw tightened.

"Why was I told he was dead?""

The doctor glanced at Sarah.

"I think you should speak with him directly.""

He led them down the corridor.

Room 418 was guarded by a private security officer.

The officer looked at the physician.

"Dr. Whitmore, we weren't expecting visitors.""

Michael stepped forward.

"Move.""

"Sir, I can't.""

Patricia presented her credentials.

"We have reason to believe this patient is being held under fraudulent authorization. We will need to verify his legal representative.""

The security officer looked uncomfortable.

Dr. Whitmore opened the door.

Inside, an elderly man lay beneath a white blanket.

His hair was almost completely gray.

His hands were thin.

But his eyes were open.

When Michael entered, the old man turned his head.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Robert whispered:

"Michael.""

Michael approached the bed.

"Dad?""

Robert began crying.

"My boy.""

Michael gripped the bedrail.

"You were dead.""

Robert closed his eyes.

"I know.""

"You let me bury an empty coffin?""

"I had no choice.""

Michael stepped back.

"No choice? You let me believe my father was gone while my daughter was being starved in the house you built!""

Robert's face crumpled.

"Vanessa told me Lily was being cared for.""

"You believed her?""

"I was ill. I couldn't move. Richard controlled my medication and my visitors.""

Michael stared at him.

"Richard?""

Robert nodded.

"He wanted the estate.""

Sarah stepped forward.

"And Abigail?""

Robert looked at her.

His expression changed.

"Sarah.""

She approached the bed.

"Where is my daughter?""

Robert began crying harder.

"Forgive me.""

"Where is she?""

"I thought I was protecting her.""

Sarah's voice broke.

"You let them tell me my baby was dead.""

Robert looked toward Michael.

"Richard convinced me that Sarah was dangerous. He said she was moving money and planning to take the children out of the country.""

Michael shook his head.

"That's not true.""

"I know that now.""

"How?""

Robert reached beneath his pillow and produced a small black recorder.

"This contains the conversation Richard and Vanessa didn't want anyone to hear.""

Patricia stepped forward.

"Mr. Carter, may I examine it?""

Robert nodded.

She connected it to her laptop.

A recording began.

Richard's voice filled the hospital room.

"Once the old man is gone, we control the trust.""

Vanessa answered.

"And Michael?""

"Michael will sign whatever we put in front of him. He trusts me.""

Another voice appeared.

Evelyn Shaw.

"What about the girls?""

Richard laughed.

"One is already where she belongs. The other can be made to disappear.""

Vanessa asked, "And Sarah?""

Richard's answer was chilling.

"Sarah is the only person who can prove the original arrangement was fraudulent.""

The recording continued.

Then Robert's voice appeared.

"You're going to destroy my family.""

Richard replied:

"You destroyed it when you decided to leave everything to the children.""

Michael looked at his father.

"Why didn't you go to the police?""

Robert's eyes filled.

"I tried.""

He pointed weakly toward the recorder.

"Listen to the end.""

The recording crackled.

Then Richard spoke again.

"There's one more thing, Robert. You need to understand that Sarah wasn't the only woman I had a child with.""

Michael froze.

A woman's voice followed.

Evelyn's.

"Richard, don't.""

But Richard continued.

"Michael has another daughter.""

Michael felt the blood drain from his face.

Robert began trembling.

The recording ended.

Patricia slowly closed her laptop.

Michael stared at the recorder.

"Another daughter?""

Robert nodded.

"Yes.""

"How many children are there?""

His father looked directly into his eyes.

"Three.""

Michael couldn't speak.

May you like

Robert reached for his hand.

"And the third one has been living in your house.""
