Chapter 9: The Truth Behind Laura's Last Night
The front door opened.
Richard Cole walked inside wearing a dark coat and carrying a black leather briefcase.
He looked at Daniel.
Then at Michael.
Finally, his eyes settled on Vanessa.
“You've made a mess of everything,” he said.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“You told me you were going to fix it.””
Richard placed his briefcase on the hall table.
“I did fix it. You were supposed to follow instructions.””
Daniel moved between Richard and the children.
“Don't come any closer.””
Richard looked almost amused.
“Daniel, you've been listening to half-truths.””
“Then give me the other half.””
Richard glanced at Michael.
“Your attorney knows more than he's admitting.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“Michael?””
Michael didn't answer.
Richard smiled faintly.
“Interesting, isn't it? The man who claims to protect your family has been sitting on the truth for years.””
Daniel felt his anger rising.
“Enough. Tell me who Lily's father is.””
Richard's expression changed.
He looked toward the staircase.
Lily was standing behind Ethan now, clutching her stuffed rabbit.
Richard's face softened.
“Lily, sweetheart.””
The girl immediately hid behind her brother.
Richard's softness disappeared.
“You see? That's what happens when children are taught to fear the wrong people.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don't speak to her.””
Richard opened his briefcase.
He removed a document and placed it on the table.
“This is the original hospital registration.””
Daniel looked down.
The document listed Laura as the mother.
The father's name was blank.
But beneath it was a handwritten note.
*Paternity pending.*
Daniel looked up.
“What does this prove?””
Richard sighed.
“Laura was pregnant when she married you.””
Daniel felt the room tilt.
“No.””
“Lily was born during your marriage, but she was conceived before it.””
Daniel looked toward Vanessa.
She nodded slowly.
“Laura told me before she died.””
Daniel shook his head.
“Why didn't she tell me?””
Vanessa's eyes filled.
“She was going to.””
“When?””
“The night she went to the hospital.””
Daniel remembered that night.
Laura had complained of dizziness and severe abdominal pain. He had driven her to the emergency department, stayed beside her for hours, and held her hand until the doctors told him they needed to perform additional tests.
She had asked him to go home briefly to get Ethan's favorite blanket.
He had left for less than an hour.
When he returned, Laura had deteriorated.
By morning, she was gone.
He had never questioned the doctors' explanation.
Now he wondered whether he had been allowed to understand what really happened.
“Who was Lily's father?”” he asked.
Richard looked at him.
“Me.””
Daniel stared.
Richard continued.
“Laura and I had a relationship before she met you. It ended before your marriage. I didn't know about the pregnancy until later.””
Daniel felt his hands curl into fists.
“And you let me believe Lily was just another relative's child?””
Richard shrugged.
“Laura wanted her protected. You were already raising two children. She thought telling you would destroy the family.””
Daniel's voice cracked.
“Did Laura know you were involved in her medical treatment?””
Richard looked away.
Michael suddenly spoke.
“That's enough, Richard.””
Richard turned.
“Don't pretend you have clean hands.””
Michael stepped forward.
“You forged records. You diverted funds. You altered medical documentation.””
Richard laughed.
“And you accepted payments to keep the trust investigation quiet.””
Daniel turned toward Michael.
“What?””
Michael's expression crumbled.
Richard opened a second folder.
Inside were bank statements showing transfers to an account bearing Michael's name.
Daniel stared at his attorney.
“Tell me those are fake.””
Michael lowered his head.
“Daniel…”
“You were supposed to protect my children.””
“I made a mistake.””
“You stole from them too?””
Michael didn't answer.
Daniel felt betrayed from every direction.
But Ethan's small voice interrupted.
“Daddy?””
Daniel turned.
His son was holding a folded piece of paper.
“What's that, buddy?””
“I found it in Mommy's music bunny.””
Daniel took the paper.
It was a second handwritten note from Laura.
Unlike the previous letters, this one was dated the day she died.
Daniel unfolded it.
Daniel,
If you are reading this, I may not have had the chance to explain everything.
Lily is Richard's daughter. I know this will hurt you, but I need you to understand that she is innocent. She deserves the same love and protection as Ethan and Sophie.
Daniel's eyes filled.
Richard has been trying to gain control of the children's inheritance. I discovered that he was using Vanessa to access the accounts. I have evidence.
I am leaving the evidence with someone I trust.
Daniel stopped.
There was another line.
The person I trust most is not Michael.
He looked up.
Richard's smile faded.
The letter continued.
It's the person who has been caring for my children since the beginning.
Daniel read the sentence again.
“Who?”” he whispered.
A sound came from the kitchen.
A woman's voice answered.
“Me.””
Everyone turned.
An older woman stood in the doorway.
Her silver hair was tied in a neat bun. She wore a beige coat and held a handbag against her chest.
Daniel recognized her immediately.
Patricia Miller.
Laura's former nanny.
The woman who had supposedly left to care for her elderly mother.
“Patricia?””
She nodded.
“I'm sorry, Daniel.””
He stared at her.
“Where have you been?””
“Trying to keep your children safe.””
Richard stepped backward.
“Get out of here.””
Patricia ignored him.
She placed her handbag on the table and removed a small digital recorder.
“Laura gave me this the morning she died.””
Daniel stared at it.
“What is it?””
“Her final conversation with Richard.””
Richard's face changed.
“Patricia, don't.””
She pressed the button.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Laura.
Weak, but unmistakable.
“Richard, I know what you did.””
A man's voice answered.
“You don't understand the situation.””
“I understand perfectly. You accessed my children's trust, and now you're threatening my family.””
“Give me the documents.””
“No.””
There was a pause.
Then Richard's voice became colder.
“You're making a mistake.””
Laura answered quietly.
“If anything happens to me, Daniel will find out.””
The recording continued.
A door slammed.
Then Laura spoke again.
“Patricia, if you're hearing this, take the children away from anyone who asks you to hide the truth.””
The recording ended.
Daniel looked at Richard.
“You were there.””
Richard didn't deny it.
Patricia continued.
“Laura discovered the medication discrepancy. She had already contacted the hospital administrator. She was planning to report Richard the following morning.””
Daniel's voice was barely audible.
“What happened after she left?””
Patricia looked at Richard.
“He followed her to the hospital.””
Richard suddenly lunged toward the recorder.
Daniel moved, blocking him.
“Don't touch her!””
Patricia stepped backward.
“There's more.””
She removed another document from her handbag.
It was a laboratory report.
A DNA test.
Daniel looked at the names.
Laura Carter.
Daniel Carter.
Lily Cole.
The result was clear.
*Daniel Carter was Lily's biological father.*
Daniel stared at the page.
“No…”
Patricia nodded through tears.
“Laura discovered the truth shortly before she died. Richard had been lying about the paternity because he wanted control over the inheritance.””
Richard's face turned red.
“That's impossible!””
Patricia held up the original hospital record.
“Laura and Daniel were married when Lily was conceived. The private DNA test was completed before her death.””
Daniel looked at Lily.
The little girl was watching him.
Her eyes were wet.
“Does that mean you're my daddy too?”” she asked.
Daniel dropped to one knee.
He couldn't speak.
He simply opened his arms.
Lily hesitated.
Then she ran toward him.
He held her tightly.
For the first time, the three children were together in his arms.
Ethan wrapped his arms around Daniel's shoulder.
Sophie rested her little head against his chest.
And Daniel understood what Laura had been trying to protect.
Not money.
Not property.
Her children.
All three of them.
But the moment was interrupted by the sound of sirens outside.
Police officers entered the house.
Richard immediately stepped away from the table.
Vanessa began sobbing.
Michael sat down heavily.
Patricia handed the recorder and documents to the officers.
Daniel thought it was finally over.
Then one officer approached him.
“Mr. Carter, there's something else you need to know.””
Daniel looked up.
“What?””
The officer held out a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was a small hospital identification bracelet.
Laura's name was printed across it.
And beneath her name was a second handwritten label.
*PATIENT TRANSFERRED BEFORE OFFICIAL TIME OF DEATH.*
Daniel stared at the bracelet.
“What does this mean?””
The officer exchanged a glance with his colleague.
Then he said:
“It means we may need to reopen the entire investigation into your wife's death.””
And as Daniel looked toward the front door, he noticed something even more disturbing.
Patricia was no longer standing beside the officers.
Her handbag was gone.
May you like
So was the original medical file.
And nobody had seen her leave.
