Chapter 1: The Man Who Came Home Early

“Go ahead. Try it again.””

Daniel Carter's voice cut through the living room like a gunshot.

His right hand was wrapped around the leather strap Vanessa had been about to bring down on his eight-year-old son. For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not Vanessa.

Not Ethan.

Not even the tiny girl trembling beneath the coffee table.

Daniel had been away for four days on a business trip. He had planned to return Friday evening, but an important meeting had been canceled, and he had caught an earlier flight.

He had imagined walking through his front door, kissing his wife, and surprising his children.

Instead, he had found his wife standing over his son with a raised strap.

And his fifteen-month-old daughter hiding underneath the furniture.

“Daniel!”” Vanessa stammered, quickly releasing the end of the strap.

“You're home early.””

Daniel didn't look at her.

He looked at Ethan.

The boy stood with his back against the wall, one arm stretched protectively toward the coffee table. His lower lip was split. A red mark was already spreading across his cheek.

“Ethan,” Daniel said quietly.

“Come here, buddy.””

Ethan didn't move.

His eyes darted toward Vanessa.

That tiny movement told Daniel more than any explanation could.

“Son, it's okay. Come to Daddy.””

Ethan finally took two hesitant steps forward.

Daniel dropped the strap onto the floor and crouched.

“Who did this to your face?””

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“Nobody, Daddy.””

“Nobody?””

“I fell.””

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

“See? That's what I've been trying to explain. Ethan has been impossible all afternoon. He refuses to listen, and he keeps making Sophie cry.””

Daniel slowly turned his head.

“Then why were you holding a strap?””

Vanessa blinked.

“I wasn't going to hurt him.””

“You were standing over an eight-year-old boy with a leather strap in your hand.””

“Daniel, you're misunderstanding everything.””

“Am I?””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Vanessa folded her arms, trying to recover her composure.

“Your son has been lying to me. I asked him a simple question, and he refused to answer. I had to discipline him.””

Daniel glanced at the coffee table.

A tiny hand had appeared beneath its wooden edge.

“Sophie?””

The hand disappeared.

Daniel's expression changed.

He lowered himself to the carpet.

“Sweetheart, Daddy's home.””

Nothing.

“It's Daddy. You can come out.””

A small whimper came from underneath the table.

Ethan immediately knelt beside him.

“It's okay, Soph. It's Daddy.””

A little face appeared between the table legs.

Sophie was wearing pink pajamas with tiny yellow ducks. Her cheeks were wet, and her blond curls were tangled around her forehead.

She looked at Daniel.

Then at Vanessa.

And immediately crawled backward.

Daniel felt something twist painfully inside his chest.

“Vanessa, step away from the table.””

“Daniel, she's just being dramatic.””

“Step. Away.””

Vanessa reluctantly moved toward the kitchen.

Daniel stretched out his arms.

Sophie crawled toward him, but instead of reaching for his face, she grabbed his shirt and buried her head against his chest.

He lifted her carefully.

Her little body was shaking.

“Daddy's here,” he whispered, kissing her hair.

“Nobody is going to hurt you.””

Ethan stood beside them.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, buddy?””

“Can we go somewhere else?””

Daniel looked at his son.

“Why?””

Ethan swallowed.

“Because when you're gone, Vanessa says we're not allowed to tell you things.””

Daniel went completely still.

Behind him, Vanessa let out an irritated sigh.

“Oh, for heaven's sake. He's twisting my words again.””

Daniel slowly stood.

“What things?””

Ethan glanced at his sister.

Then he whispered something that made Daniel's blood run cold.

“She says Sophie has to learn to be quiet. And if she cries, she puts her in the dark room.””

Daniel tightened his arms around his daughter.

“What dark room?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Daniel, please. He's making it sound worse than it is.””

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

At the end stood a narrow door.

A door he had never paid much attention to.

“What room is that?””

Vanessa's lips parted.

“It's just storage.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Then why does my daughter look terrified every time you walk near it?””

For the first time since he had entered the house, Vanessa had no immediate answer.

And Daniel was beginning to understand that the strap on the floor was only the beginning.

May you like

Because when he asked Ethan what had happened to Sophie that afternoon, the little boy looked at his father's face and whispered:

“She saw something, Daddy. Something Vanessa told her never to tell you.””
