Chapter 4: The Agreement Nobody Was Supposed to Find

“Because the agreement she forged isn't the first one. We found another document, signed months before your marriage, and it concerns the legal ownership of your children.””

Daniel stared at his phone.

For several seconds, the only sound in the office was Sophie's quiet breathing against Ethan's shoulder.

“What agreement?”” Daniel demanded.

Michael Reeves exhaled.

“Daniel, I need you to listen carefully. When you married Vanessa, she signed a document as part of the financial arrangements surrounding your late wife's estate. That document was never supposed to transfer custody or guardianship. But someone altered a separate copy.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“What did you sign?””

She shook her head.

“Don't listen to him.””

Michael continued.

“We discovered a notarized statement claiming that you voluntarily appointed Vanessa as the children's primary legal guardian, with authority to make certain decisions without your approval.””

Daniel's stomach tightened.

“That is impossible. I never signed anything like that.””

“I know. The signature appears to be forged.””

Daniel glanced at the photograph.

The unfamiliar man standing beside Vanessa suddenly seemed much more important.

“Who is the man in this picture?””

“His name is Richard Cole. He handled several private transactions for Vanessa. We believe he helped prepare the altered documents.””

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, hang up.””

Daniel raised one hand.

“Not another word.””

“You're letting Michael manipulate you!””

“Then explain the photograph.””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I met Richard because I needed legal advice.””

“About what?””

“My position in this family.””

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Your position? You had a home, financial security, and two children who called you family.””

“They never accepted me!””

Ethan flinched.

Vanessa noticed him.

Instead of apologizing, she pointed at the boy.

“See? That's exactly what I mean. He always looks at me like I'm some kind of monster.””

Daniel moved between them.

“Stop talking to my son.””

Vanessa's face reddened.

“You don't know what it's like being compared to a dead woman every single day!””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Nobody asked you to replace Laura.””

The name changed the atmosphere.

Laura had been Daniel's first wife and the mother of Ethan and Sophie. She had died after a sudden medical emergency when Sophie was only a few months old.

Vanessa had entered their lives almost a year later.

At first, she had seemed wonderful.

She brought Ethan books, learned Sophie's bedtime routine, and promised Daniel that she would never make the children feel like outsiders.

Daniel had believed her.

Now he wondered how much of that kindness had been an act.

Michael's voice came through the phone.

“Daniel, I have another concern. We found a witness statement attached to the original document.””

“What witness?””

“A woman named Patricia Miller.””

Daniel frowned.

“Laura's former nanny?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked up sharply.

Patricia had left their household shortly after Vanessa moved in. She had told Daniel she needed to care for her elderly mother.

He hadn't questioned it.

“Why would Patricia be involved?””

Michael paused.

“Because she claims Vanessa offered her money to sign a statement accusing you of being an unfit father.””

Daniel felt the room tilt.

“What?””

“She refused. Shortly afterward, she lost her job.””

Vanessa's face had gone white.

“That's a lie!””

Michael heard her.

“Mrs. Carter, I suggest you don't say anything else without legal counsel.””

Daniel ended the call.

He placed the phone on his desk.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Did you pay Patricia to lie about me?””

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“She was jealous. She wanted money.””

“Did you?””

“I was trying to protect my future!””

“By taking my children?””

“I never wanted to take them!””

Daniel stared at her.

“Then why did you need a forged guardianship agreement?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

A phone vibrated inside her handbag.

She reached for it.

Daniel noticed the screen light up.

A message appeared.

*RICHARD: Did you find the original? We cannot let him see the second page.*

Daniel stepped forward.

“Give me the phone.””

Vanessa grabbed her handbag.

“No.””

“Vanessa.””

“It's private!””

He didn't touch her. He simply held out his hand.

“Put it on the desk.””

She hesitated.

Then she threw the phone onto the leather surface.

Daniel looked at the message.

“Who is Richard asking about?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Daniel opened the message thread.

There were dozens of conversations.

Some were about money.

Others were about property.

But one message from three weeks earlier made his blood run cold.

*VANESSA: The little girl keeps going into the office. What if she remembers where I hid it?*

*RICHARD: Then make sure she stops looking. The boy is the bigger problem.*

Daniel slowly turned toward Ethan.

The boy was standing rigidly in the doorway.

His small hand was wrapped around Sophie's.

“Daddy,” Ethan whispered.

Daniel crouched.

“What is it, buddy?””

Ethan looked at Vanessa.

Then he said something that made Daniel's heart break.

“She told me Mommy's things were going to disappear. She said if I kept asking about them, Sophie would have to go away too.””

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

When he opened them, Vanessa was backing toward the hallway.

“Where are you going?”” he asked.

“I need air.””

“You're not leaving with the children.””

“I never said I was taking them!””

“Then stay where you are.””

Vanessa looked at Ethan.

For a moment, her face changed into something Daniel had never seen before.

Fear.

Not fear of being caught hurting a child.

Fear of what that child might say next.

Ethan tightened his grip on Sophie.

“Daddy,” he whispered, “I know where Mommy's other box is.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Where?””

Ethan pointed toward the basement.

“Behind the washing machine.””

And suddenly Daniel understood why Vanessa had been so desperate to find the missing USB drive.

May you like

The children had seen more than she realized.

And whatever was inside that box might explain everything.
