Chapter 8: The Attorney Who Knew Too Much

“Michael?””

Daniel hurried toward the staircase.

His attorney stood in the entrance hall, holding a thick leather folder.

He looked unusually pale.

“Daniel, we have a serious problem.””

Daniel stopped halfway down the stairs.

“You're supposed to be at your office.””

“I know.””

“Why are you here?””

Michael looked past him.

His eyes landed on Vanessa.

Then on Lily.

For a brief moment, his expression changed.

Recognition.

Daniel noticed.

“You know that little girl?””

Michael adjusted his tie.

“I know about her.””

“That's not what I asked.””

Michael placed the folder on the hall table.

“We need to talk privately.””

Daniel laughed without humor.

“Apparently everyone in this house has secrets. I'm done with private conversations.””

He pointed toward the living room.

“Start talking.””

Michael opened the folder.

Inside were copies of legal documents, bank transfers, and photographs.

“Three months before Laura died, she contacted me about concerns regarding the children's inheritance. She believed someone had accessed the trust without authorization.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because she asked me not to until she had evidence.””

Daniel stared at him.

“She was my wife.””

“I know.””

“You were my attorney.””

“I was trying to protect her investigation.””

Daniel's voice rose.

“By keeping me in the dark?””

Michael lowered his eyes.

“Laura believed that someone close to you was involved.””

Daniel glanced at Vanessa.

“And you believed her?””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.

“Michael, don't do this.””

He looked at her.

“Mrs. Carter, you should have stopped months ago.””

Daniel turned.

“What does he mean?””

Michael removed a document from the folder.

“This is a copy of the original trust agreement. Laura designated three beneficiaries: Ethan, Sophie, and Lily.””

He placed it on the table.

“Each child was entitled to an equal share.””

Daniel studied the document.

Then he noticed a handwritten amendment.

The date was two weeks before Laura died.

“What is this?””

Michael pointed.

“Laura added a protection clause. No guardian could withdraw, transfer, or borrow against the children's funds without approval from an independent trustee.””

Daniel looked up.

“Who was the independent trustee?””

Michael hesitated.

“Me.””

Daniel's expression hardened.

“You?””

“Yes.””

“And you didn't tell me?””

“I couldn't disclose the investigation while the documents were being challenged.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Then why did Vanessa have access to the records?””

Michael opened another page.

“Because someone submitted a false authorization form claiming that you had appointed her as the children's sole financial representative.””

Daniel stared at him.

“Was it accepted?””

“Temporarily.””

“Did she take the money?””

Michael nodded reluctantly.

“Some of it.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“How much?””

“Approximately four hundred thousand dollars.””

Vanessa immediately interrupted.

“I borrowed it!””

Daniel turned.

“From three children?””

“I was going to return it!””

“You stole their inheritance.””

“I was desperate!””

“For what?””

Vanessa looked toward the floor.

Michael answered.

“Richard Cole had accumulated substantial debts. Vanessa was transferring funds to help him settle them.””

Daniel stared at his wife.

“You were giving my children's money to Richard?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“It wasn't supposed to be like this.””

“Then what was it supposed to be?””

She began crying again.

“Richard promised me that everything would be replaced before the children were old enough to understand.””

Daniel took a step toward her.

“You used a baby's inheritance to pay a grown man's debts.””

Vanessa's voice became desperate.

“You don't understand! Richard had something over me.””

“What?””

She looked toward Michael.

Then whispered, “He knew what happened the night Laura died.””

Daniel felt his heartbeat accelerate.

Michael closed his folder.

“Daniel, that's why I'm here. We found evidence that the medical records were altered.””

Daniel stared.

“Altered how?””

“The medication Laura received was administered under a prescription that had been canceled earlier that day.””

The room went silent.

“Who canceled it?”” Daniel asked.

Michael looked directly at Vanessa.

“Richard Cole.””

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“No. That's not what happened.””

Michael continued.

“We also found a payment from an account controlled by Vanessa to a private medical consultant who later changed his statement about Laura's treatment.””

Daniel felt sick.

He looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know?””

She didn't answer.

“Did you know Richard interfered with Laura's medical care?””

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“I didn't know until afterward.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Afterward?””

She covered her face.

“Richard told me it was an accident. He said Laura had been ill for months.””

“Then why did you hide the records?””

“Because he threatened me!””

Daniel stared.

“With what?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“He said if I told anyone, he would make sure Lily disappeared.””

Daniel glanced toward the stairs.

Lily was standing there, listening.

Her small fingers were wrapped around the wooden railing.

“Where is her father?”” Daniel asked.

Vanessa looked at Michael.

“He's coming here.””

Michael's expression changed.

“Richard?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He called me ten minutes ago. He said he was coming to collect the original documents.””

Daniel looked at the front door.

“Then we call the police.””

Michael shook his head.

“I already did. They're on their way.””

Daniel moved toward the children.

“Ethan! Sophie!””

His son appeared at the top of the stairs carrying Sophie.

“Daddy?””

“Come downstairs, buddy. We're going to leave the house for a while.””

Ethan nodded.

But before he could move, Vanessa spoke.

“Daniel, wait.””

He turned.

She was holding a small photograph.

It showed Laura standing beside a hospital bed.

On the bed was a newborn baby.

But there was something written on the back.

Daniel took it.

He read the words twice.

*LILY IS NOT THE CHILD YOU THINK SHE IS.*

He looked at Vanessa.

“What does this mean?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Laura told me something the night before she died.””

“What?””

“She said Lily wasn't Richard's biological daughter.””

Daniel stared at her.

“Then whose daughter is she?””

Vanessa looked toward Ethan and Sophie.

Then she whispered:

“She's yours, Daniel.””

The world seemed to stop.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Laura had a child before she met you. She never told you because she was afraid you'd reject her.””

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

“That doesn't make sense. Lily was born four years ago.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Because the birth certificate was changed.””

Michael stepped forward.

“Daniel, that's not possible. We verified the original records.””

Vanessa suddenly looked at him.

“Did you verify the hospital's private adoption file?””

Michael froze.

For the first time, Daniel saw genuine uncertainty on his attorney's face.

Then a car horn sounded outside.

Once.

Twice.

Vanessa looked toward the window.

May you like

“Richard's here.””

And before anyone could move, the front door handle began turning.
