Chapter 6: The Letter From a Mother Who Knew
Daniel took the envelope from Ethan with both hands.
For a moment, he couldn't open it.
His son's name was written in Laura's familiar handwriting, the same handwriting that had once labeled lunchboxes and birthday presents.
Ethan watched him.
“Is it from Mommy?””
Daniel nodded.
“I think so, buddy.””
“Can I hear it?””
Daniel crouched and brought the boy closer.
“Of course.””
Vanessa stood near the basement steps.
“Daniel, don't.””
He looked up.
“Why?””
“You're upsetting him.””
Ethan immediately stepped behind his father.
Daniel turned back to the envelope.
He carefully opened it.
Inside was a folded sheet of paper and a small photograph.
The photograph showed Laura sitting on a park bench with Ethan when he was about three years old. He was holding a red balloon, and Laura was laughing.
On the back, she had written:
My brave little boy. Always protect your sister, but never forget that you deserve protecting too.
Daniel felt his eyes sting.
He unfolded the letter.
My sweet Ethan,
If Daddy is reading this to you, I want you to know something. You were never responsible for keeping our family safe. That was always the grown-ups' job.
Ethan leaned closer.
Daniel continued reading.
If someone ever makes you feel afraid to tell Daddy the truth, please remember that you have done nothing wrong. You should never have to hide to keep someone happy.
Daniel stopped.
Ethan's eyes were fixed on the paper.
“Keep going, Daddy.””
Daniel swallowed.
There are things in this family that adults may try to hide. Some people might tell you that secrets are necessary because they love you. But real love does not ask a child to be frightened.
The next sentence was underlined twice.
If you ever see a silver key, take it to your father.
Daniel turned the page over.
Nothing else.
He looked at Ethan.
“Have you ever seen a silver key?””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“Vanessa has one.””
Daniel's heart began pounding.
“Where?””
“In her jewelry box.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That's enough.””
Daniel stood.
“What does the key open?””
“Nothing important.””
“Then you won't mind showing me.””
She shook her head.
“Daniel, this is becoming obsessive.””
He looked at her.
“My dead wife left a letter specifically warning our son about secrets. You have forged documents, hidden property records, and tried to transfer my children's inheritance. You don't get to tell me what is important.””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“You're making a terrible mistake.””
“Then help me understand.””
She looked toward Ethan.
“Send him upstairs.””
“No.””
“Daniel, please.””
“Tell me about the key.””
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
Finally, she said, “It's an old key. Laura gave it to me.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You just told me you barely knew her.””
Vanessa's eyes widened slightly.
She had contradicted herself.
Daniel noticed.
“Why would Laura give you a key?””
“I don't remember.””
“Try.””
Vanessa looked away.
Then Ethan spoke.
“It's the one she hid in the music bunny.””
Daniel turned toward his son.
“What?””
Ethan pointed at the stuffed rabbit Sophie was holding near the basement doorway.
“Mommy put it there before she went to the hospital.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
He took the bunny from Sophie carefully.
The fabric was worn, and one seam near its left ear had been repaired with different-colored thread.
He turned it over.
There was a tiny opening beneath the stitching.
Inside was a small silver key.
Daniel stared at it.
Vanessa suddenly lunged forward.
“Give me that!””
Daniel stepped back.
“Don't move!””
Vanessa stopped.
For the first time, she looked genuinely desperate.
“Daniel, you don't understand what you're holding.””
“Then tell me.””
“It's not safe.””
“What's not safe?””
She looked toward the children.
Then she whispered, “The room.””
Daniel remembered the narrow storage door at the end of the upstairs hallway.
The room Ethan had described.
The room where Sophie had supposedly been locked.
He looked at Vanessa.
“That's what this key opens?””
She didn't answer.
Daniel picked up the children and carried them upstairs.
He asked Ethan to stay in the bedroom with Sophie while he examined the lock.
The silver key slid into the small brass mechanism.
It turned.
The door opened.
The room was not a storage closet.
It was a small office.
A desk stood against one wall. A filing cabinet occupied the other. Several cardboard boxes were stacked beneath a window covered by heavy curtains.
Daniel stepped inside.
The air smelled stale.
On the desk sat a laptop.
Beside it was a photograph of Laura.
Daniel approached slowly.
The photograph showed her standing outside a medical center.
But someone had drawn a red circle around a man standing in the background.
Richard Cole.
Daniel's hands tightened.
He opened the nearest filing cabinet.
Inside were medical records, copies of financial statements, and several printed emails.
The first email was dated three weeks before Laura died.
*FROM: RICHARD COLE*
*SUBJECT: FINAL TRANSFER*
The account is ready. Once the original beneficiary documents are changed, the funds can be redirected without attracting attention.
Daniel read it twice.
Then he found a reply.
*FROM: VANESSA*
What about the children?
Richard's answer was chilling.
They are too young to understand. Keep them away from the documents. Daniel must never know.
Daniel felt sick.
He continued searching.
At the bottom of the drawer was a sealed medical envelope.
Laura's name was printed across the front.
He opened it.
Inside was a hospital report.
The date matched the day Laura had died.
But one detail made Daniel's hands go numb.
The report listed a medication administered shortly before her condition deteriorated.
The medication had been prescribed under a doctor's name Daniel didn't recognize.
And beneath the prescription was a handwritten note:
*Patient's husband has not been informed of the additional dosage.*
Daniel stepped back.
A floorboard creaked behind him.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
“Put that down.””
Daniel looked at her.
“What did you do?””
She shook her head.
“I didn't kill Laura.””
“Then why do you have her medical records hidden in a locked room?””
“Because Richard told me to keep them safe!””
“Safe from whom?””
“From you!””
Daniel stared at her.
“Why would I need to be kept away from my own wife's medical records?””
Vanessa began crying.
“Because Laura was investigating us.””
“Us?””
She pressed both hands against her face.
“I didn't know what Richard was doing at first. He told me it was just paperwork. He said Laura had agreed to everything.””
“Then why did you keep going?””
“Because by the time I understood, it was too late.””
Daniel moved toward her.
“Too late for what?””
Vanessa lowered her hands.
Her voice was barely audible.
“Richard wasn't just handling Laura's finances. He was the last person who spoke to her before she collapsed.””
Daniel felt the walls closing in.
“Where is he now?””
Vanessa looked at the photograph.
“I don't know.””
Daniel held up the medical report.
“Then why did he send you a message yesterday?””
Her eyes widened.
Daniel turned the laptop toward her.
A notification had appeared.
An incoming video call.
The caller's name was displayed across the screen.
*RICHARD COLE.*
Daniel answered.
A man's face appeared.
He was sitting inside a parked car, his expression tense.
For a moment, he said nothing.
Then his eyes moved past Daniel's shoulder.
He saw Vanessa.
His expression changed.
“Vanessa,” he said sharply.
“You weren't supposed to let him open that room.””
Daniel leaned toward the screen.
“Who are you?””
Richard stared directly into the camera.
Then he said:
“Mr. Carter, before you accuse your wife of anything, you need to know what Laura was planning to do the night she died.””
Daniel's throat tightened.
“What was she planning?””
Richard glanced toward someone outside the car.
Then he whispered:
“She was going to tell you that Ethan and Sophie weren't the only children connected to her inheritance.””
Daniel froze.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
May you like
And Richard added one final sentence.
“There's another child, Daniel. And that child has been living in your house.””
