Chapter 9: The Guardian’s Hidden Sin
The recording stopped.
But Victor’s words remained.
The person who controlled everything was someone none of you would suspect.
Nobody spoke.
Claire looked around the room.
Every face was unfamiliar now.
Every smile from the past felt like a disguise.
She turned to Thomas.
“Who?””
Her father looked away.
That hurt more than any confession.
“Dad.””
Thomas closed his eyes.
“Claire…”
“Who protected me while destroying me?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Thomas.””
The older man finally looked up.
His face was filled with regret.
“It was your grandfather.””
Claire froze.
“My grandfather?””
Thomas nodded slowly.
“He started the chain.””
Rachel looked shocked.
“That’s impossible.””
Thomas looked at her.
“I wish it was.””
Claire stepped back.
“My grandfather died before all of this.””
“Yes.””
“Then how?””
Thomas took a breath.
“Because he wasn’t protecting you.””
The sentence cut deeper than anything.
Claire whispered:
“What do you mean?””
Thomas looked at the old documents.
“Your grandfather built the company using secrets.””
The room became silent.
“He discovered Victor’s crimes.””
Claire nodded.
“So he stopped him.””
Thomas shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at her.
“He used him.””
Rachel’s face changed.
“My father…”
Thomas nodded.
“Victor took the blame for things your grandfather ordered.””
Claire felt sick.
“And Rachel’s father?””
Thomas lowered his head.
“Was the person who tried to expose it.””
Rachel looked devastated.
“My father was innocent.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
The answer was simple.
Painfully simple.
Claire looked at Thomas.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I was afraid.””
Claire laughed.
“Everyone is always afraid.””
Thomas accepted the anger.
“I thought hiding the truth would protect you.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“And it destroyed her.””
Thomas looked down.
“Yes.””
For the first time that night, Claire saw him not as a powerful man.
Not as the head of a family.
Just as a father who had made unforgivable choices.
Then Lily spoke.
“Grandpa?””
Everyone turned.
Lily looked at Thomas.
“Did you know my money was stolen?””
Thomas’s face broke.
“No.””
“But you knew people were lying.””
Thomas couldn’t answer.
Lily nodded sadly.
“That’s still bad.””
Nobody argued.
Because an eight-year-old had said what everyone else was afraid to admit.
Claire held her daughter’s hand.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
The sound cut through the silence.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
Claire noticed.
“What is it?””
Daniel looked toward the ballroom doors.
“Someone accessed the safe-deposit box.””
Thomas went pale.
“No.””
Rachel looked confused.
“What?””
Thomas whispered:
“The final evidence.””
Daniel nodded.
“The person who opened it knew the code.””
Claire felt a chill.
“Who has the code?””
Nobody answered.
Then Emily slowly stepped forward.
Everyone turned.
Claire stared.
“Emily?””
Her former best friend looked terrified.
“I didn’t want this.””
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“What did you do?””
Emily started crying.
“I was trying to fix it.””
Claire felt betrayed all over again.
“Fix what?””
Emily looked at her.
“The safe-deposit box.””
The room exploded.
Daniel stepped forward.
“You opened it?””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
She looked toward the doors.
“I tried to stop someone else from opening it.””
Claire stared.
“Who?””
Emily looked at the entrance.
A shadow appeared outside.
A person stood there holding a small metal box.
Emily whispered:
“The person who has been behind all of this.””
The doors opened.
And the person walked inside.
Carrying the final evidence.
May you like
Carrying the truth.
And carrying a secret that would change Claire’s entire understanding of her own family.
