Chapter 12: The Truth About Daniel

Claire walked away from everyone.

She needed space.

But there was nowhere to go.

The ballroom was filled with ghosts.

Every corner held a memory.

The flowers she chose.

The music she loved.

The wedding she thought represented a new beginning.

Instead, it became the place where every lie in her life was exposed.

Daniel followed her.

“Claire.””

She stopped.

“Don’t.””

He froze.

She turned.

“How long?””

Daniel looked down.

“How long did you know my father threatened you?””

“Three years.””

Claire laughed softly.

“Three years.””

She wiped away a tear.

“You let me hate you for three years.””

“I thought it would keep you safe.””

“Safe?””

Her voice cracked.

“You let Lily believe her father abandoned her.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I know.””

Claire looked at him.

“That hurt her.””

“I know.””

“Do you know how many nights she cried?””

Daniel’s face broke.

“I know.””

Claire stepped closer.

“Then why?””

Daniel whispered:

“Because Thomas had evidence against me.””

Claire frowned.

“What evidence?””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

Then back at her.

“Fake evidence.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel continued.

“He threatened to accuse me of stealing from the company.””

Thomas lowered his head.

“I was wrong.””

Claire looked at him.

“You destroyed my family to protect a reputation?””

Thomas said nothing.

Because there was no defense.

Daniel took out his phone.

“I saved everything.””

He showed her old messages.

Threats.

Warnings.

Documents.

Claire read them.

Her hands shook.

Thomas had not only hidden the truth.

He had controlled it.

“Why come back now?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Because she found the courage I didn’t have.””

Lily looked surprised.

“Me?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

He knelt beside her.

“You saved your mother.””

Lily looked down.

“I just wanted people to stop lying.””

Claire hugged her daughter.

Then she looked at Rachel.

Rachel was sitting quietly.

Still processing the revelation about her family.

Claire walked toward her.

“I’m sorry.””

Rachel looked up.

“For what?””

“For what my family did.””

Rachel shook her head.

“Your family?””

She looked around the room.

“Everyone here hurt someone.””

The honesty surprised Claire.

Rachel continued.

“But my father was innocent.””

Claire nodded.

“He deserves the truth.””

Eleanor stepped forward.

“He will get it.””

Then the police officer approached.

“Excuse me.””

Everyone turned.

“We found another file connected to the safe-deposit box.””

Daniel frowned.

“Another one?””

The officer nodded.

“It was hidden under a false name.””

Thomas looked concerned.

“What name?””

The officer checked the paper.

Then looked at Claire.

“Claire Carter.””

Everyone froze.

Claire felt cold.

“My name?””

The officer nodded.

“The file was created twenty years ago.””

Daniel looked confused.

“Why would someone create a file under Claire’s name?””

Nobody answered.

Then Eleanor whispered:

“Because it wasn’t meant to be found today.””

Claire looked at her.

“Then when?””

Eleanor stared at the document.

“When Claire finally discovered who she really was.””

Claire opened the file.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of a baby.

On the back was written one sentence.

*The true heir was never the person we thought.*

Claire turned the photograph over.

And saw the baby’s name.

Her hands began to shake.

Because the baby in the picture wasn’t her.

It wasn’t Rachel.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It was someone who had been standing in that ballroom all night.

May you like

Someone nobody had ever questioned.

Someone who had the biggest secret of all.
