Chapter 6: The Man From the Past

The man standing in the doorway looked older.

Much older.

Gray hair.

A tired face.

A suit that looked expensive but worn.

The entire ballroom stared.

Claire couldn’t move.

Because she knew him.

Even after all these years.

Even after everything that happened.

She knew him.

“Dad?””

The word escaped before she could stop it.

The man lowered his eyes.

“Claire.””

Her knees almost gave out.

Her father.

Thomas Carter.

The man everyone believed was dead.

The man whose estate started the entire nightmare.

The room erupted.

Guests whispered.

Phones came out.

Questions flew.

But Claire heard only one thing.

Her own heartbeat.

Daniel stepped beside her.

“He’s alive.””

Claire looked at him.

“You knew?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

Thomas walked slowly into the ballroom.

Margaret immediately stepped backward.

For the first time that night, she looked completely powerless.

Thomas looked at her.

“You thought I was gone forever.””

Margaret’s face turned pale.

“You should have stayed away.””

Claire looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Thomas stopped in front of her.

“I’m sorry.””

Two words.

Two words Claire had waited years to hear.

But they didn’t fix anything.

“Sorry?””

Her voice broke.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

Thomas lowered his head.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Claire laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

She looked around.

“Everyone says they lied because they were protecting me.””

Thomas accepted the anger.

Because he deserved it.

“I made mistakes.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“More than mistakes.””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

He looked at Lily.

“And I almost cost my granddaughter everything.””

Lily watched him carefully.

She didn’t run to him.

She didn’t smile.

She simply asked:

“Did you know?””

The question stopped everyone.

Thomas looked at her.

“Know what?””

“That Vanessa stole my money.””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

Claire felt betrayed all over again.

“You knew?””

Thomas looked at her.

“I discovered it too late.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Margaret threatened you.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

Thomas looked at Margaret.

“She told me if I exposed her, she would release documents claiming Daniel was responsible for the financial crimes.””

Daniel clenched his jaw.

“They had fake evidence.””

Thomas nodded.

“I know.””

Claire looked at Daniel.

“So you both were trapped?””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

The truth was becoming more complicated.

Not less painful.

Thomas pulled a small envelope from his coat.

“I kept the original evidence.””

Margaret suddenly shouted.

“Don’t.””

Everyone looked at her.

Thomas continued.

“Bank records.””

He opened the envelope.

“Transfer histories.””

Another document.

“Messages.””

Another.

“And proof that the account receiving Lily’s money was controlled by someone else.””

Claire stared.

“Who?””

Thomas looked at Vanessa.

Then Margaret.

Then Emily.

Nobody moved.

Finally, he said:

“The person who planned the wedding.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“That’s impossible.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

He looked at Claire.

“The wedding was never meant to celebrate love.””

A pause.

“It was meant to complete the final transfer.””

Claire felt cold.

“Complete what?””

Thomas handed her the final document.

At the top was a contract.

A contract with Vanessa’s signature.

And another signature underneath.

Claire read the name.

Her heart stopped.

Because the person who had organized the wedding had not been Vanessa.

It had not been Margaret.

It had been someone Claire trusted completely.

Someone who had been smiling beside her every day.

Thomas whispered:

“The wedding planner was only a cover.””

Claire looked up.

“Who hired them?””

Thomas’s eyes moved toward the back of the ballroom.

Toward a person who had been quietly watching everything.

May you like

Then the person stepped forward.

And Claire realized the final betrayal had been standing in the room from the very beginning.
