Chapter 18: The Truth Claire Never Remembered

The words hit harder than anything else.

Claire Carter.

Her own name.

On the complaint.

She stared at the officer.

“No.””

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“I’m only reporting what the record shows.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Let me see.””

The officer handed him the file.

Daniel read it.

His expression changed.

Claire watched him.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared her.

“Daniel.””

He looked up.

“It’s real.””

Claire shook her head.

“That’s impossible.””

The officer explained.

“The complaint was submitted using your legal identification.””

Thomas looked confused.

“But Claire was only a teenager then.””

The officer nodded.

“Which is why the record was sealed.””

Rachel looked at the document.

“Someone used her name.””

Claire felt relieved for half a second.

Then she saw Daniel’s face.

He wasn’t convinced.

“You know something.””

Daniel looked at her.

“I remember this.””

Claire froze.

“What?””

Daniel swallowed.

“The day it happened.””

Everyone turned.

Claire stared.

“What day?””

Daniel looked at Thomas.

Then back at her.

“The day your grandfather’s company collapsed.””

Claire shook her head.

“I wasn’t there.””

Daniel looked sad.

“Yes, you were.””

The memory came slowly.

A hallway.

A locked office.

Her grandfather crying.

Her father shouting.

A young Claire standing outside the door.

She had forgotten.

Or someone had helped her forget.

Claire touched her temple.

“I don’t remember.””

Daniel nodded.

“I know.””

Thomas looked away.

Claire noticed.

“Dad.””

Thomas didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

His silence was enough.

“You knew.””

Thomas whispered:

“Yes.””

Claire stepped back.

“What happened?””

Thomas closed his eyes.

“You found the documents.””

Daniel nodded.

“You found proof.””

Claire looked confused.

“What proof?””

Victor answered.

“The proof that your grandfather and father were hiding.””

Claire stared.

“My younger self found it?””

“Yes.””

Rachel looked at the documents.

“And she reported it?””

Victor nodded.

“She tried.””

Claire felt dizzy.

“But why don’t I remember?””

Thomas looked broken.

“Because I asked doctors to help you forget.””

The room went silent.

Claire’s voice became a whisper.

“You erased my memory?””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

She looked at him.

“You took my own truth away.””

Thomas cried silently.

“I was afraid.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

She looked around.

“I’m tired of that word.””

Everyone became quiet.

Because she was right.

Fear had been the excuse behind every betrayal.

Victor stepped forward.

“The complaint was the beginning.””

Claire looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“The person who destroyed the complaint was the person who wanted the truth hidden.””

Daniel opened the file.

“There’s a signature.””

Claire looked.

A name.

A name attached to the order to seal the evidence.

She expected Margaret.

She expected Thomas.

She expected someone from the past.

But the signature belonged to someone else.

Someone standing in the ballroom.

Someone who had claimed to help her.

Someone who had spent the entire night revealing secrets.

Claire looked at Emily.

Emily’s face changed.

“No.””

Claire stared.

“Emily?””

Emily shook her head.

“I didn’t.””

Daniel looked at the signature again.

“It’s not possible.””

Claire felt the room spinning.

Because the final betrayal wasn’t from the person everyone hated.

It wasn’t from the person everyone blamed.

It came from the one person Claire thought had been searching for the truth beside her.

Emily whispered:

“I can explain.””

May you like

Claire looked at her.

And for the first time that night, she didn’t know who to believe.
