Chapter 8: The Secret That Started Everything

Daniel read the report again.

Then again.

Like the words might change.

They didn’t.

Claire watched his face.

“What does it say?””

Daniel looked at her.

“I don’t know how to tell you.””

Thomas stepped forward.

“Let me.””

Claire turned toward her father.

“After everything, you still have more secrets?””

Thomas accepted the anger.

“Yes.””

The room waited.

Thomas looked at Lily.

Then at Claire.

“When your grandfather died, I believed I inherited a successful company.””

He paused.

“But I inherited a lie.””

Rachel crossed her arms.

“My father discovered it.””

Thomas nodded.

“He found evidence that someone inside the company was moving money.””

Claire whispered:

“Who?””

Thomas looked down.

“Your uncle.””

The room gasped.

Claire froze.

“My uncle?””

Thomas nodded.

“Your father’s brother.””

Claire remembered him.

A man who had disappeared from the family years ago.

A man everyone stopped mentioning.

“What was his name?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Victor.””

Margaret suddenly looked nervous.

Daniel noticed.

“You know that name.””

Margaret looked away.

Claire saw it.

“You knew?””

Margaret said nothing.

Claire stepped closer.

“You knew.””

Margaret’s face hardened.

“I knew Victor.””

“Were you involved?””

Margaret laughed.

“Don’t pretend you understand.””

Claire shook her head.

“No. I’m trying to understand why every person around me chose lies.””

Margaret looked at her.

“Because the truth never helped anyone.””

Claire stared.

“That’s what you tell yourself?””

Margaret looked toward Vanessa.

“I did what I had to do.””

Vanessa looked disgusted.

“You used me.””

Margaret turned.

“I gave you everything.””

“No.””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“You gave me your obsession.””

The words surprised everyone.

For the first time, Vanessa wasn’t defending herself.

She was blaming the person who created her.

Daniel looked at Rachel.

“You knew Victor?””

Rachel nodded.

“My father worked under him.””

Thomas continued.

“Victor manipulated the company accounts for years.””

Claire looked confused.

“But why blame Rachel’s father?””

“Because he found proof.””

Thomas’s voice became quiet.

“He threatened to expose Victor.””

Rachel looked down.

“My father tried to do the right thing.””

“And Victor destroyed him for it,” Daniel said.

Rachel nodded.

Claire felt overwhelmed.

Too many betrayals.

Too many secrets.

She looked at Lily.

The little girl was sitting at a table now, exhausted.

Claire walked toward her.

“You okay?””

Lily nodded.

“I just want everyone to stop lying.””

Claire hugged her.

“I do too.””

Behind them, Daniel continued examining the documents.

Suddenly, he stopped.

“Wait.””

Everyone turned.

“What?””

Daniel held up a page.

“This isn’t complete.””

Thomas frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“There’s a missing page.””

Rachel’s face changed.

“No.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What?””

Rachel whispered:

“The final page.””

Claire stood.

“What final page?””

Rachel swallowed.

“The page that names who Victor worked with.””

Silence.

Thomas looked worried.

“Victor didn’t act alone.””

Daniel looked through the documents.

“Where is it?””

Rachel shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

Then the ballroom lights flickered.

Everyone looked up.

The music system suddenly turned on.

A voice came through the speakers.

A recorded voice.

Everyone froze.

Because it was Victor.

Claire felt her blood run cold.

“How?””

The recording played.

“If you are hearing this, then everything has fallen apart.””

The guests listened.

Victor’s voice continued.

“I knew someone would eventually find the truth.””

Thomas stepped closer to the speakers.

“Victor.””

The recording continued.

“But before you judge me, understand something.””

A pause.

“I was never the mastermind.””

Everyone looked at each other.

The impossible sentence hung in the air.

Victor’s voice continued.

“The person who controlled everything was someone none of you would suspect.””

Claire looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

Rachel looked terrified.

Then Victor said the name.

The name that made Claire’s heart stop.

Because it wasn’t Margaret.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

May you like

It wasn’t Emily.

It was someone who had been protecting Claire her entire life.
