Chapter 7: The Secret My Father Buried for Twenty-Nine Years

“The baby was not ours.””

Marcus read the words again, then looked at his father.

“What does that mean?””

Richard stood motionless beside the kitchen island. The overhead lights cast deep shadows beneath his eyes, making him look older than Marcus had ever seen him.

“It means Daniel told me Julian wasn't my biological son,” Richard replied.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

Marcus looked between them.

“Did you know that before you paid Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“And you still paid him to take the baby?””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“I paid him to make the situation disappear.””

Marcus stepped backward as though his father had struck him.

“You let Mom believe her son was dead. You let her spend twenty-nine years wondering where he was. And you paid the man who took him?””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“Stop saying that!””

His voice echoed through the kitchen.

Lily stirred upstairs, and Marcus immediately lowered his voice.

“Every time someone in this family gets caught lying, they claim they were protecting someone. Who was protecting me when I grew up believing I had no brother?””

Richard lowered his eyes.

“No one,” he admitted.

“And that is something I will have to live with.””

Marcus picked up the envelope.

Inside was a bank transfer receipt dated twenty-nine years earlier. Richard had transferred $250,000 to a company controlled by Daniel Reeves.

The amount matched the money Eleanor had received.

Beneath the receipt lay a hospital document bearing the name of a private laboratory.

A DNA test.

Marcus examined the page.

The report stated that Richard Carter could be excluded as the biological father of the child identified as Julian Carter.

But there was something strange about the document.

The test date was October 19.

Five days after Julian's supposed death.

Marcus looked up.

“Dad, how did you get a DNA sample from a baby you believed was dead?””

Richard's expression tightened.

“I didn't.””

“Then who provided the sample?””

“Daniel said he had arranged the test.””

“Did you verify it?””

“No.””

Marcus stared at him in disbelief.

“You gave a quarter of a million dollars to a man who told you your newborn son wasn't yours, and you didn't even verify the results?””

Richard gripped the edge of the counter.

“I was angry. I was humiliated. I believed your mother had betrayed me.””

“So you punished the baby?””

“No.””

“Then what do you call it?””

Richard had no answer.

Eleanor suddenly stood.

“You don't understand what happened that night,” she said.

Marcus turned toward her.

“Then tell me.””

She looked at Richard, who gave a slow, reluctant nod.

“I was in the hospital recovering from the delivery,” Eleanor began.

“Daniel came to see me. He told me Richard knew about the affair and had ordered a DNA test. He said the results proved the baby wasn't Richard's.””

“Did you see the report?””

“No.””

“Did you ask to see it?””

“Yes. Daniel told me Richard had already taken it.””

Marcus turned toward his father.

Richard shook his head.

“I never had the report until Daniel brought it to me.””

Eleanor's face crumpled.

“He told me Richard wanted the baby gone. He said your father would destroy the child if he discovered the truth.””

Richard looked horrified.

“I never said that.””

“I know that now!””

“You could have called me.””

“Daniel said you were threatening to have the baby taken away!””

Marcus put the documents down.

The story was becoming more twisted with every revelation.

Daniel had told Eleanor that Richard wanted the baby gone.

He'd told Richard that the baby wasn't his.

And somehow, both parents had believed him.

But why?

Marcus returned to the laboratory report.

A small detail caught his attention.

The name of the testing facility was printed at the top, but the signature beneath the findings belonged to a physician whose name appeared nowhere else in the report.

Marcus photographed the page and sent it to Detective Harper.

Then he called his family's attorney, requesting an independent review of the trust and the original medical records.

Within minutes, his phone rang.

It was Detective Harper.

“Mr. Carter,” she said, “where did you get that DNA report?””

“From my father. Why?””

“Because the laboratory listed on the document closed twenty-seven years ago. The physician who supposedly signed it had his medical license suspended before the date shown.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“So the report could be fake?””

“It could be. We can't determine that from a photograph, but the discrepancies are significant.””

“Can you investigate Daniel Reeves?””

“We're already investigating the threat against your daughter. If this document is fraudulent, it could be relevant to a larger case.””

Marcus thanked her and ended the call.

He turned toward his father.

“The report may be fake.””

Richard's face drained of color.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to speak.

Then he sat down heavily.

“If that report was fabricated, I may have paid Daniel to steal my own son.””

Eleanor collapsed into the nearest chair.

A terrible silence settled over the kitchen.

Then Marcus noticed something else.

The bank receipt showed that Richard's transfer had gone to Daniel's company.

But the second page listed a different destination account.

The money had been moved again, just two days later, to an account registered under a name Marcus didn't recognize.

*Catherine Bell.*

“Who is Catherine Bell?”” he asked.

Richard leaned forward.

“I don't know.””

Eleanor stared at the name.

Then she whispered, “The woman who raised Julian.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“You know her?””

“I saw the name on the photograph Daniel sent me five years ago. He said Julian was living with a woman named Catherine.””

Marcus immediately called Detective Harper back.

She asked him to send the account details and promised to check the name against the information they had collected.

Then she asked a question that made his blood run cold.

“Mr. Carter, has anyone besides your family had access to these documents?””

Marcus thought of the security cameras, the threatening photograph of Lily, and the message warning them to stop searching for Julian.

“Yes,” he replied.

“Someone has been watching our house.””

“Then please listen carefully. Don't confront Daniel. Don't contact anyone connected to the trust. And don't go looking for Julian yourself until we understand who is behind these threats.””

Marcus promised to cooperate.

But when the call ended, he found another message waiting on his phone.

This one contained a photograph of a young man standing outside a modest brick house.

He had dark hair, a strong jaw, and a narrow scar crossing his left eyebrow.

The same scar as Daniel's.

Beneath the photograph were two lines.

*You want to know whether Julian is your brother?*

*Ask him why he was paid to destroy your family.*

Marcus stared at the screen.

Then he noticed the timestamp.

The photograph had been taken less than an hour earlier.

Whoever sent it knew where Julian was.

And they were determined to make Marcus believe his missing brother was not a victim at all.

He turned the phone toward his father.

Richard studied the image, then whispered a name Marcus had never expected to hear.

“That's not Julian.””

Marcus frowned.

“Then who is it?””

Richard pointed at the scar.

“That's Daniel's son.””

Eleanor suddenly stood.

“No,” she whispered.

Richard looked at her.

“It's the child he raised after Julian disappeared.””

Marcus felt the last piece of his certainty crumble.

If the man in the photograph wasn't Julian, then someone was deliberately directing them toward another person.

May you like

And that person might be the key to finding his brother.

Or the next person determined to keep him buried.
