Chapter 4: The Baby in the Photograph
Marcus stared at the photograph in his father's hand.
His mother stood outside a hospital entrance, younger by at least twenty years, her dark hair falling over her shoulders. She wore a cream-colored coat and held a newborn wrapped in a blue blanket.
Daniel Reeves stood beside her.
His arm rested around her waist.
But that wasn't what made Marcus's stomach twist.
It was the date written on the back.
October 14.
The day before Marcus's fourth birthday.
He looked up slowly.
“Who's the baby?””
Nobody answered.
Richard placed the photograph on the marble counter beside the fake pregnancy belly.
“Eleanor,” he said, his voice dangerously quiet.
“I think it's time.””
His mother looked as though she'd forgotten how to breathe.
“Richard, please. Not like this.””
“Like what?”” Marcus demanded.
“In front of everyone? In the bathroom? That's how this family handles the truth, isn't it? We hide it until someone accidentally discovers it.””
Chloe stood against the wall, clutching her arms across her chest. Her expensive maternity dress suddenly looked absurd, a costume worn by a woman whose entire life had become a lie.
Ethan leaned against the door.
“Dad, just tell us what happened.””
Richard looked at his younger son.
“Twenty-nine years ago, your mother told me she had lost a baby.””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
Marcus felt his pulse quicken.
“What baby?””
“Your brother.””
The word landed like a physical blow.
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
“I don't have a brother.””
Richard's expression hardened.
“That's what I believed.””
He explained that Eleanor had been pregnant shortly before Marcus was born. She'd suffered complications during the final months, and Richard had been told the baby had died shortly after delivery. He'd been overseas negotiating the purchase of a commercial property when the hospital called.
By the time he returned to Dallas, the funeral arrangements had supposedly been completed.
There had been no photographs.
No hospital records shown to him.
No grave he could visit.
Eleanor had told him she couldn't bear to discuss it.
He'd respected her grief.
Or so he thought.
“Why would you believe she had another child with Daniel?”” Marcus asked.
Richard pointed to the photograph.
“Because I found it six months ago.””
He had discovered it among old financial documents after Daniel's company requested access to archived Carter family records. At first, Richard assumed the photograph documented an ordinary hospital visit.
Then he noticed the date.
And the hospital.
It was the same hospital where Eleanor had supposedly delivered their deceased son.
Richard had confronted her privately.
She'd insisted Daniel had been helping her through a difficult time, nothing more.
He'd demanded proof that the child had died.
She'd promised to find the records.
She never did.
“I knew something was wrong,” Richard said.
“But I didn't know how far the lie went.””
Marcus felt as though the walls were closing in.
“So you suspected Mom had a child with Daniel, and you said nothing?””
“I suspected. I didn't know.””
“You could have hired someone to investigate.””
“I did.””
Richard reached into his jacket and removed a folded document.
Before he could unfold it, Eleanor stepped forward.
“Richard, don't you dare.””
He looked at her.
“After twenty-nine years, you're still trying to control what everyone knows.””
“I'm trying to protect our family!””
“From the truth?”” Marcus demanded.
Eleanor turned toward him, tears gathering in her eyes.
“Marcus, you have no idea what I went through.””
“Then tell me.””
She shook her head.
“I can't.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“You've had twenty-nine years to find the words.””
Chloe suddenly spoke from the wall.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned toward her.
She looked at the photograph, then at Eleanor.
“Daniel told me something once.””
Marcus's eyes narrowed.
“What?””
“He said the Carter family had a secret that would make him untouchable.””
Richard's face darkened.
“When did he tell you that?””
“About four months ago.””
“And you didn't think that was worth mentioning?””
“I didn't understand what he meant!””
Chloe wiped her face.
“He said there was someone in the family who owed him everything. He said that person would never let him go down.””
Eleanor's hands began to shake.
Marcus noticed.
“Mom?””
She stared at Chloe with an expression of pure hatred.
“You should have kept your mouth shut.””
Lily, who had been sitting beside Ethan in the corridor, suddenly appeared at the open doorway.
“Grandma, why are you angry?””
Eleanor's expression crumpled.
“Oh, Lily, sweetheart—”
“No.”” Marcus moved between them.
“Don't use my daughter to avoid answering.””
He turned to his father.
“What's in that document?””
Richard unfolded the paper.
It was a private investigator's report containing the name of the hospital, a list of archived birth records, and a photocopy of a financial transfer from Daniel's company to an account associated with Eleanor.
The transfer had been made twenty-nine years earlier.
The amount was $250,000.
Marcus stared at it.
“Why would Daniel pay Mom a quarter of a million dollars?””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“I don't know.””
Eleanor's silence told him she did.
Marcus stepped closer to her.
“Was it hush money?””
“No.””
“Then what was it?””
She looked at Richard.
Then at Marcus.
Finally, her shoulders sagged.
“It was the price of a promise.””
Richard went motionless.
“What promise?””
Eleanor pressed a trembling hand against her mouth.
“Daniel said he'd disappear from our lives if I agreed never to tell you the truth about your brother.””
Marcus felt his heart pound.
“Your brother is alive?””
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.””
“Don't you dare lie to me again!””
“I don't know!”” she screamed.
Her voice cracked through the restroom.
For the first time, Marcus saw genuine terror in his mother's face.
She wasn't afraid of losing her reputation.
She was afraid of something coming back to claim it.
Richard stepped toward her.
“You told me our son died.””
“I believed Daniel had taken him somewhere safe.””
“Where?””
“I never knew!””
Richard gripped the edge of the counter.
“You let me mourn a child who might have been alive all these years?””
Eleanor began sobbing.
“I was twenty-nine. Daniel told me the baby was in danger. He said someone wanted to use him against you. He said he could protect him if I gave him the money.””
“Someone who?”” Marcus demanded.
She shook her head.
“He wouldn't tell me.””
“And you believed him?””
“He was the only person who knew what had happened at the hospital.””
Richard looked as though she'd struck him.
Marcus turned away, fighting to make sense of the fragments.
His mother might have given away his brother.
His father had mourned a child who might still be alive.
And Daniel, the man who had introduced Chloe into Marcus's life, appeared to have been manipulating the family for decades.
Then Marcus noticed the final page in the investigator's report.
A name had been highlighted in yellow.
*JULIAN REEVES — POSSIBLE NEXT OF KIN.*
Beneath it was an address in Fort Worth and a note indicating that Julian had recently been added as a beneficiary to a trust connected to Daniel's company.
Marcus lifted the page.
“Who's Julian Reeves?””
Richard stared at the name.
“I've never heard of him.””
Eleanor stopped crying.
She looked at the paper, and every trace of color disappeared from her face.
“Where did you get that name?”” she whispered.
Marcus held it up.
“Who is Julian?””
His mother backed away from him.
May you like
Then she said something that left even Richard speechless.
“Because if Julian is alive, Daniel has finally found the son he took from me.””
