Chapter 3: The Man His Mother Recognized
Marcus had heard his mother deliver terrible news without changing her expression.
He had watched her dismiss business partners, fire household employees, and inform distant relatives that their invitations to family events had been withdrawn permanently.
He had never heard her whisper.
“Your father must never see this.””
He looked from Eleanor to Chloe.
“What does Dad have to do with this?””
Eleanor's face had gone pale beneath her carefully applied makeup.
“Marcus, put the photograph away.””
“Who is the man?””
“Not here.””
“I'm done hearing those words tonight.””
Chloe reached for the medical papers.
Marcus moved them behind his back.
“Don't touch them.””
“Those documents are private,” she said, her voice breaking again.
“You have no right to go through my personal belongings.””
“You brought a fake pregnancy belly to my father's birthday party.””
“I told you I could explain!””
“Then start explaining.””
Chloe looked at Eleanor.
Eleanor looked away.
That was the moment Marcus knew his mother was hiding something.
He had always believed the Carter family was built on two principles: loyalty and discretion. His father, Richard, had founded a commercial property empire from a single struggling warehouse. His mother had transformed their growing wealth into influence, charitable foundations, and a social circle that included judges, developers, and politicians.
Family problems were never discussed outside the family.
Scandals were buried.
Mistakes were forgiven if the right people benefited.
Marcus had grown up believing those habits protected them.
Now he wondered how many lies had been hidden behind them.
“Mom,” he said, “you recognize him.””
Eleanor straightened her shoulders.
“I have met many people in my life.””
“That's not an answer.””
“Your father has spent decades building this family. I will not allow a childish misunderstanding to ruin everything he's accomplished.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Why does everyone keep talking about Dad's reputation instead of my wife's pregnancy?””
Chloe flinched.
Eleanor said nothing.
Then Marcus noticed something else.
The man in the photograph wore a silver watch with a dark blue face. A distinctive watch. He had seen one like it before.
Not on a stranger.
On someone who had attended the Carter family's Christmas dinner every year since Marcus was a teenager.
He turned the photograph toward the light.
The image was slightly blurred, but the man's profile was clear enough. His dark hair was swept back from his forehead. A narrow scar crossed his left eyebrow.
Marcus's stomach tightened.
“No,” he whispered.
Chloe began shaking her head.
“Marcus—”
“Is that Daniel?””
Eleanor closed her eyes.
The name seemed to suck the air from the room.
Daniel Reeves was Richard Carter's business partner of nearly twenty years.
He had helped negotiate the purchase of the family's most valuable downtown properties. He had stood beside Richard at charity galas, appeared in newspaper photographs with the Carters, and once toasted Marcus at his wedding reception.
He was also the man who had introduced Chloe to Marcus.
Three years earlier, Chloe had been working at a luxury hotel in Dallas when Daniel brought her to a private business dinner. She had laughed at Marcus's jokes, asked him about his work, and remembered his drink order.
Within six months, they were engaged.
Marcus had always thought their meeting was a lucky coincidence.
Now he looked at his wife and wondered whether the coincidence had ever been real.
“Tell me I'm wrong,” he said.
Chloe wiped her cheeks.
“It's Daniel.””
Marcus took a step backward.
“Why were you kissing him?””
She stared at the floor.
“How long?””
“Marcus, please—”
“How long have you been seeing him?””
“I didn't mean for any of this to happen.””
“That isn't an answer!””
His shout echoed off the marble walls.
Lily covered her ears.
Marcus immediately lowered his voice.
“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””
He knelt beside her and kissed the top of her head.
Then he stood again.
“Chloe, look at me.””
She lifted her eyes.
“Was the pregnancy ever real?””
Her silence was answer enough.
Still, he waited.
He needed to hear her say it.
Chloe pressed both hands over the artificial belly beneath her dress, as though the gesture might somehow make it real.
“No,” she whispered.
The word was barely audible.
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“No?””
“I was never pregnant.””
He stared at her.
For eight months, he had imagined becoming a father again in a completely different way. Lily was the center of his world, but he'd dreamed of giving her a sibling. He'd pictured late-night feedings, the nursery he'd helped design, and the moment he'd hold a newborn son or daughter in his arms.
He had told his friends.
He had told his employees.
He had even started turning down business trips because Chloe said she didn't want him far away during the final weeks.
Every memory now felt contaminated.
“Why?”” he asked.
Chloe wiped her nose with a tissue.
“Because I thought it would make us happy.””
“Happy?””
“You wanted another child.””
“I wanted a child with my wife. I didn't want a performance.””
Her face crumpled.
“I know how it sounds.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
She glanced at Eleanor.
Marcus followed her gaze.
“Why does Mom know who Daniel is?””
Eleanor stepped toward him.
“Marcus, there are things about your father's business that you don't understand.””
“Then explain them.””
“Some relationships are complicated.””
“Was my wife sleeping with Dad's business partner while you helped her pretend she was pregnant?””
Eleanor recoiled.
“Watch your language!””
“Answer me!””
The restroom door opened.
His younger brother, Ethan, appeared in the doorway, his phone still in his hand.
“Marcus, Dad is asking where everyone went. People are starting to leave.””
He stopped when he saw the documents on the counter.
Then he saw the photograph.
His expression changed.
“Oh, God.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“You know, too?””
Ethan shook his head quickly.
“No. No, I don't know anything about this.””
“Then why do you look like you've seen a ghost?””
Ethan swallowed.
“Because that photograph isn't new.””
Chloe stared at him.
“Ethan, don't.””
He looked at her, then at Marcus.
“I saw Daniel with Chloe six months ago. Outside a restaurant on McKinney Avenue. I thought they were discussing business.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I didn't know what I was seeing!””
Ethan's voice rose.
“And because Mom told me not to interfere in your marriage.””
Marcus slowly turned toward Eleanor.
She didn't deny it.
Instead, she lifted her chin.
“I was trying to protect you.””
“From what? The truth?””
“From a scandal that would have destroyed your marriage.””
Marcus gave a short, disbelieving laugh.
“You let me celebrate a pregnancy that never existed.””
“I didn't know about the pregnancy at first.””
“At first?””
Eleanor's lips tightened.
The answer had slipped out before she'd considered it.
Marcus stepped closer.
“When did you find out?””
She remained silent.
“When, Mom?””
Eleanor looked toward the open doorway, where guests were beginning to gather in the corridor.
Then she spoke so softly that only Marcus, Chloe, and Ethan could hear her.
“Three months ago.””
Marcus felt the room tilt.
Three months.
For three months, his mother had known his wife was faking a pregnancy.
For three months, she had watched him buy baby furniture, plan parental leave, and proudly tell his father that another Carter child was on the way.
And she had said nothing.
“Why?”” he asked.
Eleanor's composure finally cracked.
“Because Daniel told me the baby was real.””
Marcus went still.
Chloe's eyes widened.
Ethan whispered, “What?””
Eleanor looked at her son.
“Daniel came to me privately. He said Chloe was pregnant, and that the child might be his. He begged me not to tell your father until he could settle the matter.””
Marcus stared at her.
“You knew there was a chance my wife was carrying another man's child, and you let me believe it was mine?””
“I was trying to keep this family together!””
“You were protecting Daniel.””
“I was protecting your father!””
The words burst from her before she could stop them.
Marcus looked at the photograph again.
His father's business partner.
His wife's secret lover.
His mother's unexplained fear.
And a pregnancy that had never existed.
Suddenly, the pieces seemed to point toward a secret much larger than adultery.
He turned to Chloe.
“Why did Daniel tell my mother you were pregnant?””
Chloe began trembling.
“I don't know.””
“Stop lying.””
“I swear, Marcus—”
“Then why did he pay for your medical appointments?””
Her mouth fell open.
Marcus hadn't noticed the small receipt tucked behind the laboratory report until then. It listed a private clinic and a payment made through a company associated with Daniel's investment firm.
Chloe stared at the paper.
“I didn't know he used his company.””
Marcus looked at his mother.
“Was that why you kept quiet? Because Daniel was paying for everything?””
“No,” Eleanor said quickly.
But she looked toward the door again.
And this time, Marcus followed her gaze.
His father stood in the corridor.
Richard Carter had arrived without his usual entourage, his silver hair perfectly combed and his black dinner jacket immaculate. Behind him, two guests hovered uncertainly, clearly aware that something extraordinary was unfolding.
Richard looked at the papers on the counter.
Then at Chloe.
Then at the photograph in Marcus's hand.
His expression changed so abruptly that Marcus knew one thing with absolute certainty.
His father recognized the photograph.
Richard stepped into the restroom and quietly shut the door behind him.
“Where did you get that?”” he asked.
Marcus held up the picture.
“Apparently, my wife has been sleeping with Daniel Reeves.””
Richard's face became unreadable.
“And the pregnancy?””
“She was never pregnant.””
For several seconds, Richard said nothing.
Then he looked directly at Eleanor.
“You told him?””
Eleanor's lips parted.
Marcus turned toward his father.
“What does that mean?””
Richard ignored him.
He walked to the counter, picked up the photograph, and examined it with the expression of a man reading a document he'd hoped would never surface.
Finally, he placed it down.
“Marcus,” he said, “there's something about Daniel you need to understand.””
“What?””
Richard looked at Chloe.
Then at Eleanor.
And then, with a weariness that seemed to age him by ten years, he spoke the words that made Marcus's blood run cold.
“Daniel didn't begin this affair with your wife.””
He paused.
“He began it with your mother.””
Eleanor whispered, “Richard, don't.””
But Richard had already turned back to his son.
“And Chloe wasn't the first woman he used to get close to this family.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a second photograph.
This one was older.
The edges were yellowed, and the image showed Daniel standing beside a young woman outside a hospital.
Marcus recognized the woman immediately.
May you like
It was his own mother.
And she was holding a newborn baby.
