Chapter 6: The Warning at Midnight
Marcus moved before anyone else could speak.
He crossed the living room in three strides, pulled the curtains shut, and checked the window locks. Ethan rushed to the front door, while Richard ordered the security team to seal the property.
Lily stirred on the sofa.
“Daddy?””
Marcus knelt beside her.
“It's okay, sweetheart. Go back to sleep.””
“Are we going home?””
“This is home, baby.””
She blinked sleepily.
“But Aunt Chloe said we're going to have a new house when the baby comes.””
Marcus's throat tightened.
“Not tonight.””
He kissed her forehead and waited until her eyes closed again.
Then he stood.
“Ethan, call the police.””
Eleanor immediately rose.
“No.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Excuse me?””
“Don't involve the police yet.””
“Someone photographed my daughter through a window and threatened her. The police are already involved.””
“You don't understand what Daniel is capable of.””
“Then explain it!””
Eleanor pressed her hands together.
“Daniel has people everywhere. He knows the security contractors, the lawyers, the investigators. If you alert the authorities before we know who sent that message, he could make everything disappear.””
Richard looked at his wife with disgust.
“Or perhaps you've spent so long protecting him that you no longer know the difference between caution and complicity.””
Eleanor recoiled.
Marcus took Ethan's phone and enlarged the photograph.
The image showed Lily asleep beneath his jacket. Behind her, the hallway was visible through the open doorway. The angle suggested the photographer had been standing outside the house, possibly near the garden windows.
There was no reflection.
No visible face.
But in the bottom corner of the image, a black vehicle could be seen parked near the curb.
Marcus recognized the car.
It belonged to the security company Daniel's firm had recommended to the Carter family two years earlier.
He handed the phone to his father.
“Do you recognize it?””
Richard studied the image.
“It's a Sentinel Security vehicle.””
“Who hired them?””
“Our company uses them for several properties.””
“Can they access this house?””
Richard hesitated.
“They have a contract to provide backup security here.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“So someone with access to our security arrangements may be helping Daniel.””
“Possibly.””
“That's enough for me.””
He called the police.
Within twenty minutes, two officers arrived and began questioning the family. A patrol car was stationed outside, and the officers asked for copies of the threatening message and the security camera footage.
But the cameras had recorded nothing unusual.
The system had been offline for eleven minutes shortly before the photograph was taken.
Eleven minutes.
Exactly enough time for someone to approach the house, take the picture, and leave.
The officer in charge, Detective Harper, studied the footage on a tablet.
“Whoever did this knew the camera system,” she said.
“Do you have anyone who might have that information?””
Marcus looked at Richard.
His father answered carefully.
“Several contractors.””
“Names?””
“We'll provide them.””
Detective Harper nodded.
“Do that as soon as possible. And don't contact the person you suspect. If someone is threatening a child, we need to establish a clear record of every communication.””
Marcus agreed.
But after the officers left, he couldn't sit still.
He walked into his study, locked the door, and opened his laptop.
If Daniel had spent twenty-nine years concealing Julian's existence, there had to be records somewhere. Hospital files. Trust documents. Financial transfers.
Something.
He searched the company archives using Julian's name.
Nothing.
He tried Daniel's company.
Nothing.
Then he searched the trust registration records Richard had mentioned.
A scanned document appeared, dated nearly three decades earlier.
The first page listed the original beneficiaries.
The second contained a handwritten amendment.
Marcus enlarged it.
A name had been added to the document in dark blue ink.
*Julian Carter.*
Not Julian Reeves.
Carter.
Marcus leaned closer.
The amendment had been witnessed by two people.
Daniel Reeves.
And Eleanor Carter.
The document was dated six days after the supposed death of Marcus's brother.
A cold wave moved through him.
His mother hadn't merely suspected that Daniel had taken the baby.
She had signed a document acknowledging Julian as the intended beneficiary after the child was supposedly dead.
Marcus printed the page and carried it downstairs.
He found Eleanor in the kitchen, sitting alone at the island. A cup of untouched tea stood before her.
He placed the document on the counter.
“Explain this.””
Eleanor looked at the page.
Then she covered her mouth.
“Where did you find it?””
“In the company archives. You signed it.””
She stared at the signature.
“I was told it was a temporary arrangement.””
“By Daniel?””
“Yes.””
“You signed away your child's inheritance?””
“I didn't understand what I was signing!””
Marcus slammed his palm against the counter.
“Then why did you sign it?””
Eleanor flinched.
“Because Daniel told me the baby was alive.””
Marcus froze.
“You knew?””
She began to cry again.
“He told me Julian had been placed with a family who could protect him. He said the trust needed a legal beneficiary so the properties wouldn't be tied up in court. He promised that when Julian was old enough, he would return him to us.””
“And you believed him?””
“I wanted to.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Did you ever try to find him?””
She nodded.
“Once. About a year later. I went to the address Daniel gave me.””
“What happened?””
“The family had moved. The neighbors said they'd left the state.””
“And you stopped looking?””
“I didn't stop. I asked Daniel for another address. He said the arrangement had changed and that searching would put Julian in danger.””
Marcus felt anger rise again.
“You let him decide whether you could find your own son.””
Eleanor bowed her head.
“Yes.””
For a long moment, Marcus couldn't speak.
He had spent his entire life believing his mother was the strongest person in the family. She could negotiate a donation from a reluctant billionaire, organize a charity gala for five hundred people, and silence an argument with one glance.
Yet Daniel had controlled her for nearly three decades.
Or perhaps she'd allowed him to.
Marcus collected the document.
“I'm going to find Julian.””
Eleanor grabbed his wrist.
“Marcus, there's something else.””
He looked down at her hand.
She released him.
“When Daniel told me Julian was alive, he said the family raising him had been paid to keep him hidden. But he also said they had been told the baby was abandoned.””
Marcus frowned.
“Why would he tell them that?””
“So they wouldn't try to contact us.””
“Did he give you their names?””
“No.””
“Did you ever see Julian again?””
Eleanor hesitated.
Then she nodded.
Marcus stared at her.
“When?””
“Five years ago.””
The kitchen seemed to shrink around them.
“You saw him five years ago?””
“I saw a photograph. Daniel sent it to me.””
“Why didn't you tell Dad?””
“Because Daniel said Julian didn't know who he was. He said the boy had grown up believing his parents were dead.””
Marcus's voice became a whisper.
“How old was he?””
“Twenty-four.””
Twenty-four.
Julian was now thirty.
An entire lifetime had passed without his parents knowing whether he was safe.
Marcus turned away, trying to control the anger burning through him.
Then Eleanor said, “There's something I haven't told Richard.””
He stopped.
“What?””
“Daniel didn't just take Julian to punish me or protect the trust.””
“Then why?””
Eleanor looked toward the dark window.
“Because Julian's biological father wasn't supposed to be Daniel.””
Marcus turned slowly.
“What?””
She wiped her cheeks.
“When I became pregnant, I was already married to Richard. I believed the baby was Richard's. But Daniel told me that the dates didn't match.””
Marcus felt the floor shift beneath him.
“Are you saying Julian might not be Dad's son?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you have a DNA test?””
Eleanor shook her head.
“Daniel said he'd arranged one. He told me the results proved Julian was his.””
Marcus stared at her.
“And you believed him?””
“I had no reason not to.””
“Except that he lied about everything else.””
Eleanor lowered her eyes.
For the first time, she looked less like a powerful matriarch and more like a woman who had spent decades living inside a story someone else had written for her.
Marcus took out his phone.
He was about to call Detective Harper when a new message appeared.
It came from the same unknown number.
This time, there was no photograph.
Only a single sentence.
*Ask Richard Carter why he paid Daniel to make Julian disappear.*
Marcus slowly lowered the phone.
Across the kitchen, Eleanor looked up.
She had seen the message.
And the expression on her face told him that whatever his father had been hiding, it was worse than anything they'd discovered so far.
Just then, Richard entered the kitchen.
Marcus held out the phone.
“Dad,” he said quietly.
“Did you pay Daniel to make my brother disappear?””
Richard read the message.
His face went completely still.
Then he closed his eyes.
“Yes,” he whispered.
Eleanor let out a strangled cry.
Marcus took one step backward.
Richard opened his eyes.
“But not for the reason you think.””
He reached inside his jacket and removed a small, worn envelope.
Inside was a hospital document, a bank transfer receipt, and a photograph of a newborn child.
Richard placed them on the kitchen island.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Before you judge me, you need to know what Daniel threatened to do.””
He pushed the photograph across the counter.
Marcus picked it up.

On the back, in Richard's handwriting, were four words.
*The baby was not ours.*
