Chapter 2: What Was Hidden Behind the Locked Door
“Marcus, you cannot seriously believe a four-year-old over your own wife.””
Chloe caught up with him halfway down the corridor.
Her heels struck the marble in sharp, uneven clicks. Behind them, the ballroom had erupted into whispers, but Marcus didn't turn around.
He held Lily's hand in one of his and the elastic strap in the other.
“Then explain it,” he said.
“I've explained it. It's a misunderstanding.””
“You said the strap wasn't yours.””
“Because I don't know where she got it!””
“Lily says she saw you take off your belly.””
“She's four!””
“And you're thirty-two.””
Chloe stopped walking.
For a moment, anger flashed across her face so nakedly that Marcus almost didn't recognize the woman standing before him.
Then she lowered her voice.
“You're choosing to believe your daughter is telling the truth because you already suspect me of something.””
Marcus turned.
“Suspect you of what?””
Chloe's eyes flickered.
Nothing more than a second.
But he'd spent ten years in business learning that the smallest hesitation often mattered more than a carefully prepared answer.
“Exactly,” she said.
“You have no reason to doubt me.””
He studied her.
“Then why are you shaking?””
Chloe folded her arms across her stomach.
“Because your family is watching me like I'm some kind of criminal!””
Lily tugged at her father's sleeve.
“Daddy, that's the door.””
At the end of the corridor stood a pair of white double doors leading to the women's restroom. Gold-framed mirrors and fresh white roses decorated the entrance, a lavish arrangement intended to match the evening's extravagant celebration.
Marcus stopped outside.
“Lily, did you go inside alone?””
“No. I was looking for Mommy's purse.””
“Your mother isn't here tonight,” he said gently.
“I mean my other mommy.””
Chloe went rigid.
Marcus frowned.
“What other mommy?””
Lily pointed toward Chloe.
“That's what Aunt Chloe said. She said she'd be my other mommy when the baby came.””
Marcus felt a strange pressure building behind his eyes.
Chloe had spent the last eight months telling him how excited she was to become a mother. She'd talked about nursery colors, tiny shoes, and the names she'd been considering.
But Lily's words made him remember something he'd deliberately ignored.
Chloe had refused every offer to accompany her to an obstetric appointment.
She said her doctor preferred privacy.
She'd never shown him a medical report.
And every time he suggested attending an ultrasound, she'd found a reason to postpone it.
At the time, he'd thought she was anxious about the pregnancy.
Now the memories arranged themselves into something far uglier.
Marcus pushed open the restroom door.
“Wait here with Grandma,” he told Lily, who had followed him down the corridor.
Eleanor had arrived behind them, her expression rigid.
“Marcus, this is enough,” she said.
“Whatever has happened, it should be handled at home.””
He looked at his mother.
“Did you know?””
Her eyebrows drew together.
“Know what?””
“That Chloe has been hiding something?””
Eleanor glanced toward Chloe.
It was a small movement.
Barely noticeable.
But Marcus saw it.
And Chloe saw him see it.
“Don't you dare drag your mother into this,” Chloe snapped.
Marcus opened the door wider.
“Then come inside and prove Lily wrong.””
Chloe hesitated.
The hesitation lasted only a heartbeat, but Marcus had already noticed.
He entered first.
The restroom was empty except for the soft hum of ventilation and the faint scent of expensive floral perfume. Several marble counters stood beneath illuminated mirrors. Beyond them, a row of private stalls stretched toward the back wall.
Lily had said the object was in the bathroom.
Marcus began searching.
He checked the counter beneath the sink. Nothing.
He looked behind the wastebasket beside the first stall. Nothing.
Then he noticed a dark red mark on the edge of the last stall's door, as though something had scraped against it.
He pushed the door open.
A large black handbag sat on the floor.
Chloe's handbag.
Marcus recognized the gold initials on the clasp.
He looked over his shoulder.
“Is this yours?””
Chloe stood in the doorway, her hands clenched at her sides.
“Yes.””
“May I see inside?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Marcus stared at her.
“Why not?””
“Because it contains personal things!””
“Then take what you need and show me the rest.””
“Marcus, stop treating me like I'm on trial.””
He said nothing.
For several seconds, neither moved.
Then Eleanor appeared behind Chloe.
“Marcus, listen to me. Your father is waiting. There are guests in that ballroom who have traveled across the country for this celebration. Do you want to destroy his birthday over a piece of elastic?””
Marcus looked down at the strap in his hand.
“I'm starting to think it's not about the elastic.””
He crouched and lifted the handbag.
It was heavier than he'd expected.
When he placed it on the counter, something inside shifted with a soft, hollow thump.
Chloe lunged forward.
“Don't!””
Marcus pulled the bag out of her reach.
“What's inside?””
“Give it back!””
She grabbed the strap of the handbag. Marcus held on, and for one brief, ugly second, they stood pulling against each other while Lily watched from the doorway with wide eyes.
“Stop it!”” Marcus said.
Chloe released the bag.
Her chest rose and fell rapidly.
Marcus opened the gold clasp.
Inside were a wallet, a lipstick, a compact mirror, several receipts, and a folded silk scarf.
He moved them aside.
Then he felt something soft and strangely smooth.
He drew it out.
A flesh-colored silicone belly.
It was molded into the shape of a heavily pregnant abdomen, complete with realistic curves and a fastening system around the waist.
For a moment, Marcus simply stared at it.
He had seen prosthetics before in movies and theater productions. This one was clearly designed to imitate a pregnancy beneath clothing.
But seeing it inside his wife's handbag was something his mind refused to process.
Chloe covered her mouth.
Eleanor took one involuntary step backward.
Marcus slowly placed the object on the counter.
Then he looked at his wife.
“Tell me,” he said, his voice barely audible, “that this is a costume.””
Chloe began crying.
Not the quiet tears of someone unfairly accused.
These were frantic, breathless sobs, accompanied by repeated attempts to wipe her face before the makeup could run.
“Marcus, I can explain.””
He didn't blink.
“Then explain.””
“It isn't what you think.””
“I'm looking at a fake pregnancy belly in your handbag.””
“Please. Not here.””
“You brought it here.””
Chloe reached for him.
He stepped away.
Her hand fell to her side.
Behind them, Lily spoke in a small voice.
“I told you, Daddy.””
Marcus turned toward his daughter.
She stood clutching the hem of her cardigan, her lower lip trembling. She didn't look pleased to have been right.
She looked frightened.
He knelt and drew her into his arms.
“You did the right thing by telling me, sweetheart.””
Lily buried her face against his shoulder.
“Is Aunt Chloe still having the baby?””
Marcus couldn't answer.
Because he suddenly understood that the silicone belly wasn't the worst thing in the bag.
Something else was tucked beneath the scarf.
A thick white envelope bearing the name of a medical clinic.
He pulled it out.
Chloe made a strangled sound.
“Don't open that.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because it's private!””
He turned the envelope over.
There was no address on the front, only a printed logo and a handwritten date from three months earlier.
The envelope had already been opened and resealed.
Marcus slid his finger beneath the flap.
Inside were several pages.
The first appeared to be a laboratory report.
The second was a medical statement.
But it was the third page that made his hands go cold.
A photograph had been clipped to the paper.
It showed Chloe standing outside a clinic, dressed in jeans and a loose sweater, her stomach completely flat.
Beside her stood a man Marcus had never seen before.
The man's arm was wrapped around Chloe's waist.
And Chloe was kissing him.
Not on the cheek.
Not in a friendly embrace.
She was kissing him the way she'd kissed Marcus on their honeymoon.
Marcus looked up slowly.
“Who is he?””
Chloe's crying stopped.
For a few seconds, the only sound was the ventilation fan humming overhead.
Then she whispered, “I can explain that, too.””
Marcus held the photograph between two fingers.
“His name. Now.””
Chloe looked toward Eleanor.
And for the first time that evening, Marcus's mother looked genuinely terrified.
Because she recognized the man in the photograph.
She knew exactly who he was.
May you like
And when Marcus turned toward her, she whispered six words that changed everything.
“Your father must never see this.””
