Chapter 7: The Room Beneath The House

The key was colder than I expected.

I watched Adrian hold it between his fingers as if it weighed more than metal.

It carried years of secrets.

Years of lies.

And maybe the truth about a man who never got the chance to tell his own story.

After the police took Victoria and Daniel away, we returned to the Whitmore estate.

But it didn't feel like the same house anymore.

The walls looked different.

The shadows seemed darker.

Every room felt like it was hiding something.

Lily sat in the living room wrapped in a blanket while a social worker spoke quietly with her.

I stayed nearby.

I didn't want her to feel alone.

Adrian stood across the room, staring at the key.

Finally, he walked over.

"Marissa.""

I looked up.

"What?""

"I need your help.""

I glanced at the key.

"You know where it goes?""

He nodded slowly.

"My brother showed me something years ago.""

"What?""

"A hidden room.""

My eyes widened.

"Here?""

"In this house.""

A chill moved through me.

"The room under the house.""

I remembered Victoria's words.

It opens the place where your brother buried his biggest secret.

"When can we look?""

Adrian looked toward Lily.

"Tonight.""

I frowned.

"Are you sure?""

"No.""

The honesty surprised me.

"I'm not sure about anything anymore.""

That was the first time I saw him truly broken.

Not angry.

Not powerful.

Just a man who realized he had missed signs right in front of him.

Later that night, after Lily fell asleep, Adrian and I went downstairs.

The basement was colder than the rest of the mansion.

The lights flickered as we walked through the storage rooms.

Old furniture covered with white sheets.

Boxes filled with forgotten memories.

Photographs nobody looked at anymore.

Adrian stopped near the far wall.

"There.""

I looked around.

"There is nothing.""

He walked closer and ran his hand along the wooden panels.

"My brother and I used to hide here when we were kids.""

I smiled slightly.

"You hid in a basement?""

He laughed quietly.

"From our parents.""

The sound disappeared quickly.

"I haven't laughed in this room in years.""

He pressed against the wall.

A hidden section moved.

Behind it was a narrow staircase leading down.

I stared.

"How long has this been here?""

"Since before I bought the house.""

We descended slowly.

At the bottom was a small metal door.

Adrian inserted the key.

It turned easily.

The door opened.

Inside was a room frozen in time.

A desk.

A computer.

Boxes of documents.

And photographs covering the walls.

My breath caught.

"This isn't a storage room.""

"No.""

Adrian stepped inside.

"This was my brother's investigation room.""

Every surface was covered with evidence.

Company records.

Bank statements.

Newspaper articles.

Photographs of Victoria.

And one photo that made Adrian stop.

It was his brother standing beside a woman.

A woman I recognized.

"Who is that?""

Adrian picked up the photo.

His face went pale.

"That's Lily's mother.""

I looked closer.

They weren't just standing together.

They were holding hands.

"She was his wife?""

Adrian shook his head.

"No.""

"Then who was she?""

He didn't answer.

Because something else caught his attention.

A journal sitting on the desk.

The cover was worn.

Adrian opened it.

The first page had one sentence.

"If Adrian finds this, it means I failed.""

His hands trembled.

He started reading.

I watched his expression change with every line.

"What does it say?""

He swallowed.

"My brother knew Victoria was stealing money from the company.""

"That part we knew.""

"No.""

He looked at me.

"He knew something bigger.""

He turned the page.

"She wasn't just stealing.""

"What was she doing?""

Adrian looked at the documents around us.

"She was creating fake identities.""

I frowned.

"For what?""

He pointed to a file.

Inside were names.

Dates.

Birth certificates.

I scanned the papers.

Then froze.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Lily Harper.

But beneath it was another name.

Another child.

Another identity.

"What is this?""

Adrian's face was filled with confusion.

"I don't know.""

Then the computer on the desk suddenly turned on.

Both of us jumped.

The screen flashed.

A message appeared.

No password.

No warning.

Just a video file.

Created three years earlier.

Adrian clicked it.

His brother appeared on the screen.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

"Adrian," the man said.

"If you're watching this, Victoria already knows.""

Adrian stepped closer.

The recording continued.

"There's something you need to understand about Lily.""

The video glitched.

The image froze.

Then came back.

His brother looked directly into the camera.

"Lily is not the only child Victoria took.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Adrian.

He looked back at me.

May you like

Then the screen displayed one final message.

*"Find the others before she does.""*
