Chapter 6: The Key To The Truth
Nobody moved.
The small key looked insignificant in Lily's tiny hand.
But the reaction on Victoria's face told me everything.
She wasn't afraid of Adrian.
She wasn't afraid of the police.
She wasn't afraid of being exposed.
But she was afraid of that key.
Adrian noticed too.
"Lily.""
His voice was gentle.
"Where did you get that?""
The little girl looked down.
"My mom gave it to me.""
Victoria immediately stepped forward.
"She's lying.""
Lily flinched.
Adrian moved between them.
"Stay away from her.""
Victoria laughed.
"You're really going to believe an eight-year-old?""
Adrian looked at Lily.
Then back at Victoria.
"Right now?""
His voice became cold.
"I believe her more than I believe you.""
Those words hit Victoria harder than anything else.
Her expression changed.
For the first time, she looked powerless.
Daniel shifted nervously.
"Victoria, we need to leave.""
She ignored him.
"Give me the key, Lily.""
The girl hugged herself.
"No.""
Victoria's eyes hardened.
"Don't make this difficult.""
I stepped forward.
"She said no.""
Victoria looked at me.
"You still think you matter here?""
I held her stare.
"More than you think.""
Adrian looked at Lily.
"What does the key open?""
Lily hesitated.
"My mom said if anything bad happened, I should give it to someone who really loved me.""
Adrian swallowed.
"Someone who loved you?""
Lily nodded.
"She said Uncle Adrian would know.""
His face changed.
A memory.
A realization.
"My brother.""
He whispered.
"My brother left this for me.""
Victoria became frantic.
"No.""
Everyone turned.
She caught herself.
Too late.
Adrian noticed.
"You knew about it.""
Victoria looked away.
"I know nothing.""
But her voice was different.
Afraid.
Adrian slowly walked toward her.
"What did my brother hide?""
Victoria didn't answer.
Daniel suddenly grabbed Lily.
Everything happened in a second.
Adrian shouted.
I screamed.
Lily cried out.
Daniel pulled her toward him.
"Enough!""
His voice echoed through the warehouse.
Victoria stared at him.
"What are you doing?""
Daniel's face was tense.
"Saving myself.""
The betrayal shocked everyone.
Victoria stepped back.
"You idiot.""
"No.""
Daniel looked at her.
"I've spent years cleaning up your messes.""
Adrian saw the opening.
"Daniel.""
The man looked at him.
"Where is the evidence?""
Daniel laughed bitterly.
"You think I'm giving it to you?""
Adrian's voice was calm.
"Your partner is about to abandon you.""
Daniel looked at Victoria.
For a moment, doubt crossed his face.
That was enough.
Adrian moved.
He grabbed Daniel's arm.
Lily fell free.
I ran to her.
"Are you okay?""
She nodded, crying.
"I was scared.""
I hugged her.
"I know.""
Behind us, chaos erupted.
Daniel and Adrian struggled.
Victoria tried to run.
But before she reached the door, police sirens filled the distance.
Everyone froze.
Victoria looked outside.
"What?""
Adrian looked at me.
Then smiled slightly.
"The emergency line.""
I understood.
The second I entered the warehouse, Adrian's phone had been tracking our location.
He had called for help before we walked inside.
Victoria stared at him.
"You planned this.""
"No.""
Adrian looked at Lily.
"I protected her.""
Minutes later, officers rushed inside.
Daniel was arrested.
Victoria was taken away.
But as she passed me, she stopped.
Her face was no longer confident.
Only angry.
"You think this ends here?""
I didn't answer.
She looked at Adrian.
"You still don't know what your brother discovered.""
Then she smiled.
A terrible, knowing smile.
"The key doesn't open the truth.""
Adrian watched her.
"Then what does it open?""
Victoria was dragged away.
But before disappearing through the door, she said one final thing:
"It opens the place where your brother buried his biggest secret.""
Adrian looked down at the key in Lily's hand.
And I knew.
May you like
The nightmare wasn't over.
It had only just begun.
