Chapter 16: The Lie That Broke A Family
The silence after Victoria’s accusation was unbearable.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
Emma stood frozen near the basement wall.
Adrian stared at her.
And Lily clung to my hand, sensing that something had changed.
"Emma.""
Adrian's voice was different.
Not angry.
Not yet.
Just hurt.
"Tell me she’s lying.""
Emma looked at him.
For a moment, I saw something in her eyes.
Fear.
Not the fear of being caught.
The fear of losing the only person who had finally believed in her.
"Adrian...""
That was enough.
His expression changed.
"You knew.""
Emma looked away.
"No.""
"Then why can't you say it?""
She closed her eyes.
Because the truth was waiting there.
Victoria smiled.
"Go ahead, Emma.""
Emma turned toward her.
"Stop.""
Victoria laughed.
"You always hated this part.""
"What part?""
"The part where you admit what you are.""
Adrian stepped between them.
"Enough.""
Victoria looked at him.
"You want the truth?""
She pointed at Emma.
"Ask her what happened the night your father died.""
The room became silent.
Emma whispered:
"I was there.""
Adrian froze.
"What?""
"I was there.""
My heart sank.
Emma looked at the floor.
"I was sixteen.""
Adrian stared at her.
"You saw him die?""
"No.""
Her voice cracked.
"I saw what Victoria did.""
Everyone looked at Victoria.
Her smile disappeared slightly.
Emma continued.
"Your father found out everything.""
She looked at Adrian.
"He knew about the children. He knew about the documents. He knew what Victoria was doing.""
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Then what happened?""
"He confronted her.""
Emma swallowed.
"I followed him.""
"Why?""
"Because I thought he hated me.""
The answer was heartbreaking.
"I thought he was leaving me again.""
Adrian's expression softened for half a second.
Then Emma continued.
"When I got there, they were fighting.""
"Victoria attacked him?""
Emma didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
"But he survived.""
Adrian looked shocked.
"He survived?""
Emma nodded.
"Yes.""
The room went silent.
"Then why did everyone think he died?""
Emma looked at Victoria.
"Because she made sure they did.""
Victoria crossed her arms.
"Careful.""
Emma ignored her.
"Your father was injured. He told me to run.""
Adrian stepped closer.
"What did you do?""
Emma looked at him.
"I called for help.""
Victoria laughed.
Everyone turned.
"Did you?""
Emma's face changed.
A painful memory.
"I...""
Victoria stepped forward.
"You didn't call for help.""
Emma looked sick.
"You froze.""
The words hit harder.
"I was sixteen.""
Victoria smiled.
"Exactly.""
Adrian looked between them.
"What happened?""
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
"I was scared.""
She whispered.
"I was so scared.""
She looked at Adrian.
"I made one mistake.""
"What mistake?""
"I listened to Victoria.""
The room went cold.
Adrian stepped back.
"What did she tell you?""
"She told me if I went to the police, I would go to prison.""
Emma wiped her tears.
"She told me your father would blame me.""
"And you believed her.""
Emma nodded.
"I was a child.""
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone knew the truth.
A child had been manipulated.
But another truth remained.
A man had died.
And Emma had carried that guilt alone.
Victoria smiled.
"See?""
She looked at Adrian.
"She caused everything.""
"No.""
Adrian's voice surprised everyone.
Victoria turned.
"What?""
Adrian looked at Emma.
Then at Victoria.
"She was a child.""
Victoria's expression hardened.
"You forgive her?""
"No.""
Adrian's voice was calm.
"I understand her.""
That seemed to anger Victoria more than anything.
She grabbed Lily's shoulder.
"Then maybe you understand this.""
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
"Let her go.""
Victoria smiled.
"You still don't understand.""
She pressed the remote in her hand.
The basement lights changed.
A red warning flashed.
Emma's face went pale.
"What did you activate?""
Victoria looked pleased.
"The original security system.""
James stepped forward.
"What did you do?""
Victoria smiled.
"I locked the facility.""
A heavy sound echoed.
Metal doors closed around us.
Then a countdown appeared on the wall.
10:00.
Adrian looked at the timer.
"What is that?""
Emma stared.
Her voice barely worked.
"The system.""
"What does it do?""
She looked at Victoria.
"It destroys everything.""
Victoria walked toward the exit.
"Evidence. Records. The entire facility.""
Adrian grabbed the door.
It wouldn't move.
Victoria stood outside.
"You all wanted the truth.""
She smiled.
"Now you can die with it.""
The door began closing.
But before it shut completely, Lily shouted.
"Aunt Victoria!""
Everyone looked.
The little girl was crying.
"Why did you hate my mom?""
For the first time...
Victoria stopped.
Her face changed.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
Pain.
Then the door closed.
The countdown continued.
09:32.
Adrian looked around.
"We need to get out.""
Emma stared at the control panel.
"I know how.""
"Then do it.""
She didn't move.
Because she saw something.
Something that made her whisper:
"No.""
Adrian looked at her.
"What?""
Emma pointed to the screen.
The final line of the countdown appeared.
Not destruction.
Not fire.
A message.
*"Subject E has failed. Begin elimination.""*
Emma went pale.
"She isn't destroying the evidence.""
May you like
She looked at Adrian.
"She's destroying us.""
