Chapter 5: The Woman Behind The Lie
The abandoned warehouse sat on the edge of the city, surrounded by empty roads and forgotten buildings.
The kind of place nobody would notice.
The kind of place someone would choose if they wanted to disappear.
Adrian parked two streets away.
"We walk from here," he said.
I looked at the dark building ahead.
"Are you sure Lily is inside?""
He showed me the message.
The same location.
The same time.
Nothing else.
"Whoever sent this wanted us here.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
His expression hardened.
"No. It doesn't.""
We moved quietly.
Every step felt louder than it should have.
The wind pushed against the broken windows, creating a low, haunting whistle.
When we reached the side entrance, Adrian stopped.
He held up his hand.
Someone was inside.
We heard voices.
A man's voice.
Then Victoria's.
"Did you really think you could expose me with one little recording?""
My entire body went tense.
Adrian looked at me.
Then pushed the door open.
"Lily!""
The voices stopped.
Inside the warehouse, a single light hung from the ceiling.
Victoria stood near a table.
The man from the photograph stood beside her.
And sitting in a chair was Lily.
Her hands weren't tied.
But she looked terrified.
The second she saw Adrian, tears filled her eyes.
"Uncle Adrian.""
Adrian stepped forward.
Victoria raised a hand.
"Stop.""
His entire body went rigid.
"You've gone too far.""
Victoria smiled.
"No, Adrian. I went exactly far enough.""
"You kidnapped an eight-year-old girl.""
"I protected what belongs to me.""
The anger in his face was impossible to miss.
"Lily doesn't belong to anyone.""
Victoria laughed softly.
"That's where you're wrong.""
She picked up a folder from the table.
"Do you know what happens when people find out your family is unstable?""
Adrian stared at her.
"What are you talking about?""
"I'm talking about reputation.""
The man beside her stepped forward.
I recognized him from the photo.
Victoria noticed.
"Let me introduce you.""
She smiled.
"This is Daniel Cross.""
Adrian's face changed.
"Daniel.""
The man's smile was cold.
"Hello, Adrian.""
"You were supposed to be in Europe.""
Daniel shrugged.
"Plans change.""
I looked between them.
"You know him.""
Adrian didn't look away from Daniel.
"He worked with my brother.""
Victoria smiled.
"And now he works with me.""
Lily looked confused.
"Why are they talking like this?""
My heart broke.
She shouldn't have been hearing any of this.
Adrian moved slightly closer.
"Lily, stay where you are.""
Victoria immediately noticed.
"You still think you're the hero, don't you?""
Adrian looked at her.
"What did you do?""
Her smile disappeared.
"I cleaned up your brother's mistakes.""
The room went silent.
Adrian froze.
"What does that mean?""
Victoria walked closer.
"It means your brother was not the perfect man everyone believed he was.""
"Don't.""
"Oh, he was hiding things.""
Adrian's voice became dangerous.
"Don't talk about him.""
Victoria opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
"Your brother was planning to leave the company.""
Adrian stared.
"What?""
"He discovered where the money was going.""
Daniel smiled.
"And he wanted to expose us.""
My skin went cold.
"So you killed him.""
Nobody answered.
But nobody denied it.
Adrian looked like the world had shifted beneath his feet.
"You.""
Victoria stepped closer.
"You think I'm cruel because of a bowl of rice?""
She looked at Lily.
"You have no idea what I had to do to survive.""
I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
She was trying to make herself the victim.
"You hurt a child.""
Victoria looked at me.
"You still don't understand.""
"Understand what?""
Her eyes narrowed.
"That children are leverage.""
The words made my stomach turn.
Adrian moved.
Fast.
But Daniel pulled something from his jacket.
A weapon.
Not pointed directly at us.
Just enough.
Enough to stop everyone.
Victoria smiled.
"Now you understand.""
The warehouse fell silent.
Then Lily spoke.
Her tiny voice cut through the room.
"Aunt Victoria?""
Everyone looked at her.
She was crying.
"But my mom told me...""
Victoria's face changed.
"What did you say?""
Lily looked terrified.
"My mom told me you would do this.""
Victoria stepped forward.
"What did your mother tell you?""
Lily looked at Adrian.
Then at me.
And whispered:
"She told me where the real evidence was hidden.""
Adrian's eyes widened.
"What evidence?""
Lily slowly reached into her sweater pocket.
And pulled out a small, old key.
May you like
Victoria stopped breathing.
Because she recognized it.
