Chapter 19: The Son Buried In The Past

Nobody moved.

The man standing across the warehouse looked at Adrian like he had been waiting years for this exact moment.

"I am Richard Oleso's first son.""

The words echoed.

Adrian stared at him.

"That's impossible.""

The man smiled sadly.

"I know.""

James stepped forward.

His face had lost all color.

"Who are you?""

The man looked at him.

"You really don't remember me?""

James said nothing.

The man took a step closer.

"I was there when you and Adrian were children.""

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"Who are you?""

The man looked directly at him.

"My name is Noah.""

A silence followed.

Then Emma whispered:

"Noah...""

Everyone turned.

Adrian looked at her.

"You know him?""

Emma nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

Her voice was filled with disbelief.

"He was the first child.""

"The first child?""

Emma looked at Adrian.

"The first one Victoria took.""

Noah smiled bitterly.

"She didn't take me.""

He looked around the warehouse.

"Your father gave me to her.""

Adrian froze.

"What?""

Noah walked toward the table.

On it was an old file.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A young Richard Oleso.

Standing beside a woman.

And a baby.

"My mother died when I was young.""

Noah's voice was quiet.

"Your father was afraid I would grow up without anyone.""

Adrian stared.

"So he adopted you.""

Noah shook his head.

"No.""

He looked at him.

"He hid me.""

The words were painful.

"Why?""

"Because Richard Oleso had secrets.""

Noah opened another document.

A custody agreement.

A research agreement.

A confidentiality contract.

Adrian read the pages.

His face changed.

"My father wasn't trying to hurt children.""

Noah nodded.

"But he was trying to fix a mistake.""

"What mistake?""

Noah looked at Emma.

"Me.""

Emma looked down.

Adrian frowned.

"Explain.""

Noah sighed.

"Your father created the original program because he wanted to help children with trauma.""

He looked around.

"But he became obsessed.""

"Obsessed with what?""

"Understanding why some children survived horrible things while others didn't.""

Emma spoke quietly.

"He studied us.""

Noah nodded.

"He wanted to protect us.""

A pause.

"But he forgot something.""

"What?""

"Children aren't experiments.""

The words hurt because they were true.

Adrian looked at the files.

"Then Victoria changed everything.""

Noah nodded.

"She convinced him that controlling outcomes was the same as protecting people.""

"And he believed her?""

"No.""

Noah looked away.

"Not forever.""

Adrian understood.

"That's why he tried to stop her.""

"Yes.""

The warehouse became quiet.

Then Adrian looked at Noah.

"Why did Victoria bring you here?""

Noah smiled sadly.

"Because she knew you would come.""

"She wanted me to find you.""

"No.""

Noah looked toward Lily.

"She wanted Lily to find out the truth.""

Everyone turned.

Lily stepped forward.

"What truth?""

Noah's expression softened.

"Your mother was part of this too.""

The words made Lily freeze.

"My mom?""

"Yes.""

Adrian immediately moved closer.

"Careful.""

Noah looked at him.

"She deserves the truth.""

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"What did my mom do?""

Noah knelt.

"She tried to stop Victoria.""

"Then why did Aunt Victoria say she was bad?""

"Because Victoria lies when she is afraid.""

Lily looked down.

Noah continued:

"Your mother discovered that Victoria was using children for her own purposes.""

"Like me?""

Noah nodded.

"Like Emma.""

Emma looked at him.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

Noah looked at her sadly.

"Because Victoria convinced you I was the enemy.""

Emma looked away.

Another wound.

Another lie.

Then Noah reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small device.

Adrian immediately recognized it.

"What is that?""

"The original evidence.""

Everyone went silent.

"The evidence your father died protecting.""

Noah placed it on the table.

"Everything Victoria did.""

Adrian looked at him.

"Why didn't you release it?""

Noah's expression darkened.

"Because Victoria had something I wanted.""

"What?""

He looked at Lily.

"Her.""

The room went cold.

Noah continued:

"Victoria knew Lily's mother hid the final proof.""

Adrian frowned.

"Final proof?""

Noah nodded.

"Proof that would destroy everyone involved.""

"Everyone?""

Noah looked at him.

"Even Richard Oleso.""

Adrian stared.

"What does that mean?""

Before Noah could answer, the warehouse doors opened.

Everyone turned.

Police officers rushed inside.

But they weren't alone.

A woman walked behind them.

Victoria.

Adrian's face changed.

"How?""

Victoria smiled.

"Did you really think I would let you find the truth without me?""

The officers surrounded the room.

One of them stepped forward.

"Nobody move.""

Adrian looked confused.

Then he noticed.

The officers weren't looking at Victoria.

They were looking at him.

Victoria smiled.

"Now you understand.""

She walked closer.

"All these years, everyone thought I was the villain.""

She pointed at the evidence.

"But the truth is much more complicated.""

The officer took out a file.

"Adrian Oleso, you are under arrest for illegal experimentation, child trafficking, and conspiracy.""

The world stopped.

Adrian looked at Noah.

Then Emma.

Then Lily.

Victoria whispered:

"Your father built the system.""

May you like

She smiled.

"And now you get blamed for finishing it.""
