Chapter 9: The Lie That Started Everything

I left the coffee shop without saying goodbye.

I don’t remember walking outside.

I don’t remember getting into the car.

I only remember one thing.

My hands were shaking.

Not because I believed Ryan.

Because I was afraid I might.

My father had spent my entire life teaching me about honesty.

About integrity.

About doing the right thing even when nobody was watching.

Could he really have hidden something this big?

When I arrived back at my parents’ house, my father was waiting.

He knew immediately.

“What did Ryan tell you?””

I stopped.

That question wasn’t:

“What happened?””

It wasn’t:

“Are you okay?””

It was:

“What did Ryan tell you?””

My stomach tightened.

“You knew he would say something.””

My father looked away.

That was enough.

“Dad.””

He sighed.

“Claire.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need the truth.””

My mother appeared behind him.

She looked worried.

“What happened?””

I looked between them.

“Ryan said Grandpa’s company wasn’t destroyed because of Mom.””

Nobody moved.

“He said Dad was involved.””

Silence.

The kind of silence that answered questions before words did.

My heart sank.

“Is it true?””

My father sat down.

For the first time in my life, I saw him look old.

Not tired.

Old.

“Not the way Ryan believes.””

I crossed my arms.

“Then explain.””

He nodded slowly.

“Your mother investigated Ryan’s father. She found evidence of illegal activity.””

“Yes.””

“But the person who provided the evidence was someone inside his company.””

“Who?””

My father looked at me.

“Me.””

The room became silent.

I stared.

“You?””

“I was working with your mother.””

I shook my head.

“But Ryan thinks you betrayed his father.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

My father’s eyes filled with regret.

“Because the evidence was stolen.””

My mother stepped forward.

“What?””

My father looked at her.

“After the investigation began, someone accessed the files.””

My mother went pale.

“Someone inside?””

“Yes.””

I looked between them.

“Who?””

My father hesitated.

And that hesitation terrified me.

“Dad.””

He closed his eyes.

“We never found out.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So Ryan’s family lost everything because of a mystery?””

“No.””

My father looked at me.

“Because someone wanted them to believe that.””

A chill ran through me.

“What does that mean?””

My father reached for a folder sitting on the table.

One I had never seen.

“I kept searching after the investigation ended.””

He opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Emails.

Reports.

And one picture.

My breath caught.

Because I recognized the person immediately.

The person standing beside Ryan’s father years ago.

The person who had access to everything.

The person who could have destroyed two families.

Mark.

My cousin.

My father looked at me.

“Claire, Ryan has been blaming the wrong people for twenty-five years.””

I stared at the photograph.

Mark.

The same man who helped Ryan.

The same man who signed those documents.

The same man who was now trying to help destroy my life.

My mother whispered:

“He never wanted revenge.””

I looked up.

“What?””

My father’s expression turned grim.

“He wanted control.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

Nobody spoke.

Then I answered.

A voice came through.

A voice I recognized.

Mark.

“Claire, I think it’s time we stop pretending we’re family.””

My blood went cold.

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“The same thing Ryan wanted.””

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“What?””

His voice became quiet.

“Your house.””

I froze.

May you like

Then he added:

“And your baby.””
