Chapter 14: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
I stared at my name on the page.
It looked real.
That was the terrifying part.
The handwriting was almost identical.
The curve of the C.
The way the letters connected.
Even the small mark I always made at the end of my signature.
Someone had copied me perfectly.
“Claire?””
Dr. Harris’s voice sounded distant.
I looked up.
“Who gave you this?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“Your aunt.””
“When?””
“Three weeks ago.””
My chest tightened.
Three weeks.
That was before the argument.
Before Ryan pushed me.
Before everything exploded.
The plan had already existed.
“How did you know it was fake?””
Dr. Harris looked ashamed.
“Because I was there when you signed your original hospital forms.””
She pointed to the paper.
“This signature was copied from those.””
My mother stood behind me.
“She knew.””
Dr. Harris looked at her.
“Your sister?””
“Yes.””
The doctor nodded.
“She told me Claire wanted this arrangement.””
I closed my eyes.
My aunt had used my own pregnancy against me.
My own handwriting.
My own child.
My own trust.
I looked at Dr. Harris.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of what?””
“Of being wrong.””
I almost laughed.
“People keep saying that.””
She looked at me.
“What?””
“That they were afraid.””
I stood.
“But everyone’s fear protected themselves.””
My voice cracked.
“Not me.””
The room went quiet.
Dr. Harris looked devastated.
“You’re right.””
For the first time, someone admitted it.
No excuses.
No explanations.
Just the truth.
When we left the office, my father was waiting.
One look at my face told him.
“What happened?””
I handed him the documents.
He read them.
Then his expression changed.
“This is enough.””
My mother looked at him.
“For what?””
“To end this.””
But before we could leave, my phone rang.
Ryan.
I stared at the screen.
My father shook his head.
“You don’t have to answer.””
I did anyway.
“Hello?””
His breathing was heavy.
“Claire.””
“What?””
“I know you found out.””
My eyes narrowed.
“About the guardianship?””
Silence.
That was his answer.
“How long did you know?””
Ryan didn’t speak.
“Ryan.””
“I found out after Mark showed me the documents.””
“You saw them?””
“Yes.””
“And you did nothing?””
His voice cracked.
“I was trying to figure out how deep it went.””
“No.””
I closed my eyes.
“You were protecting yourself.””
“I was scared.””
“So was I.””
Silence.
Then he said:
“I’m sending you something.””
“What?””
“Proof.””
I frowned.
“Proof of what?””
“Who started this.””
The call ended.
Seconds later, an email arrived.
One attachment.
A video file.
My father opened it.
The footage was old.
Security footage from a building.
A meeting room.
Several people sat around a table.
Ryan’s father.
Mark.
My aunt.
And someone else.
Someone whose face wasn’t clear.
But whose voice was.
A voice I recognized.
My mother gasped.
Because she knew before I did.
The speaker said:
“If Bennett’s daughter marries Ryan, we’ll finally have access.””
My blood turned cold.
The video continued.
Another voice answered:
“And if she has a child?””
A pause.
Then:
“Even better.””
I couldn’t move.
They weren’t reacting to my pregnancy.
They were waiting for it.
My father replayed the video.
The timestamp appeared.
Twenty years ago.
Before I even met Ryan.
Before Ryan even knew my name.
My mother whispered:
“This was never about revenge.””
I looked at her.
“What was it about?””
She stared at the screen.
Then said:
“Control.””
The video ended.
But one final frame remained.
A document on the table.
A plan.
A list of names.

And at the top:
