Chapter 6: The Family Member Who Chose Him
I couldn’t move.
The words repeated in my head.
Someone from my own family.
For years, I believed family meant safety.
I believed the people closest to you were the ones who would protect you when everything fell apart.
But lately, every person I trusted seemed to be standing on the other side of the room.
“Say the name again,” my father said.
Lauren looked terrified.
“I don’t want to hurt anyone.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“You are already too late for that.””
Lauren looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
“Who was helping him?””
She closed her eyes.
“Your cousin, Mark.””
The room went silent.
Mark.
My mother’s sister’s son.
The cousin who came to my wedding.
The cousin who gave a speech about how lucky Ryan was to have me.
The cousin who hugged me when I announced my pregnancy.
“No,” I whispered.
Lauren nodded sadly.
“Yes.””
My mother looked confused.
“Why?””
Lauren sat down.
“Because Ryan promised him money.””
I stared at her.
“What money?””
She opened the folder.
Inside were printed messages.
Bank transfers.
Notes.
Plans.
I didn’t want to touch them.
I didn’t want proof.
Because proof meant my worst fears were real.
My father picked up the papers.
His face became unreadable.
Then he handed them to my mother.
She read silently.
Her eyes changed.
“Ryan was going to sell the house?””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
Lauren nodded.
“He thought after the baby was born, you would be too tired to fight.””
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
My own husband had looked at me every night.
Kissed my forehead.
Held my hand.
And secretly planned how to take away the one thing my grandmother left me.
My mother reached for my hand.
“Claire.””
I pulled away.
Not because I didn’t want comfort.
Because I was afraid if someone touched me, I would fall apart.
The door opened.
A police officer stepped inside.
“Mrs. Bennett?””
My father stood.
“Yes.””
The officer looked at me.
“Are you Claire Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“We need to ask you some questions about the incident tonight.””
I nodded.
For the first time, I wasn’t afraid.
Because Ryan was no longer standing over me.
He wasn’t blocking the hallway.
He wasn’t telling me I was dramatic.
He wasn’t making me question what happened.
I had people beside me.
The officer asked about the argument.
The slap.
The shove.
The moment I couldn’t feel my baby move.
I answered everything.
Then he asked:
“Does your husband have access to your home?””
I looked down.
“Yes.””
“Keys?””
“Yes.””
“Security system?””
I hesitated.
Then remembered.
A few weeks earlier, Ryan asked for the password.
He said it was because he wanted to “help.””
My stomach dropped.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at me.
“He knows the security code.””
My father immediately grabbed his phone.
“Change everything.””
The officer nodded.
“That would be wise.””
A nurse entered after a few minutes.
“Claire?””
“Yes?””
“There is someone here asking to see you.””
I froze.
“Who?””
The nurse looked at her clipboard.
“Ryan.””
Nobody spoke.
My father immediately stepped forward.
“No.””
The nurse looked uncertain.
“He says he wants to apologize.””
I looked toward the door.
A part of me wanted answers.
A part of me wanted him to admit everything.
But another part remembered his face when he said I caused my own pain.
My mother leaned closer.
“Your choice.””
I took a deep breath.
“Let him in.””
My father looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
Because I needed to see his eyes.
I needed to know if there was anything left of the man I married.
The door opened.
Ryan walked in.
He looked different.
Not because he was hurt.
Because he was afraid.
He slowly approached the bed.
“Claire…”
I said nothing.
He looked at my parents.
Then back at me.
“I made a mistake.””
I stared at him.
“A mistake?””
His lips parted.
“I was angry.””
“No.””
My voice surprised even me.
“You were comfortable.””
Ryan went quiet.
I continued.
“You were comfortable hurting me because you believed nobody would stop you.””
His face changed.
For a moment, guilt appeared.
Then disappeared.
“I love you.””
I looked at him.
“No.””
The word came easily.
“You love what I provide.””
Ryan shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
I looked at the folder on the table.
The papers.
The plans.
The betrayal.
Then I asked the one question I had been afraid to ask.
“Ryan, if my mother hadn’t answered the phone…”
He looked away.
And that was all I needed.
But before he left, he stopped at the doorway.
He turned back.
And whispered something that made my father immediately stand.
“Claire…”
Ryan’s voice was barely audible.
“You don’t know what your mother did to my family.””
My heart stopped.
Because for the first time that night, Ryan wasn’t defending himself.
May you like
He was afraid.
And whatever secret existed between our families was something even he was terrified to reveal.
