Chapter 15: The Plan Written Before My Birth

The name haunted me.

Project Bennett Inheritance.

It sounded like something from a movie.

Not something connected to my family.

Not something connected to my daughter.

My father sat silently for nearly an hour after watching the video.

That scared me.

Because my father was never silent.

He was the person who always had answers.

Always had a plan.

Now he looked like a man watching his past come back to punish him.

“Dad.””

He looked up.

“I’m sorry.””

The words surprised me.

“For what?””

“For bringing this into your life.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“No?””

“You didn’t choose what they did.””

My voice softened.

“But you chose not to tell me.””

He accepted that.

“I did.””

My mother sat beside him.

“We both did.””

I looked at them.

“Why?””

My mother answered.

“Because we thought if you never knew, you would never become a target.””

I looked down.

“And instead?””

She closed her eyes.

“Instead, they found you anyway.””

The next day, Victoria called.

Her voice was urgent.

“We need to move immediately.””

“What happened?””

“Ryan filed a motion.””

My stomach dropped.

“For what?””

“Emergency custody protection.””

I froze.

“He filed?””

“Yes.””

My father stood.

“On what grounds?””

Victoria hesitated.

“Allegations of instability.””

I almost laughed.

“Instability?””

“They’re claiming you are under emotional distress and being manipulated by your parents.””

My hands shook.

“He’s using the truth against me.””

“Yes.””

Victoria’s voice became firm.

“Which is why we need evidence.””

“I have evidence.””

“You have some.””

She paused.

“But we need the source.””

“The source?””

“The person who created the entire plan.””

Mark.

My aunt.

Ryan.

But there was still someone above them.

Someone we hadn’t found.

That afternoon, Ryan appeared outside my parents’ house.

My father opened the door before he could knock.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Ryan looked exhausted.

“I know.””

I stepped forward.

“Why are you here?””

He looked at me.

“To tell you the part I never told anyone.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“You have five minutes.””

Ryan nodded.

“I met Mark because he knew about my father.””

“Go on.””

“He told me my father was framed.””

I stared.

“But he wasn’t.””

Ryan looked down.

“I know that now.””

“And you still helped him.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“Why?””

Ryan swallowed.

“Because I wanted revenge.””

The words sat between us.

“I thought your family destroyed mine.””

I looked away.

“And now?””

“Now I know I destroyed the person I loved because I was angry at people who weren’t responsible.””

For a second, I saw the man I married.

The man before all of this.

Then I remembered the kitchen.

The slap.

The shove.

The fear.

“Ryan, regret doesn’t erase what you did.””

“I know.””

He pulled out a small flash drive.

“I found this in Mark’s office.””

My father took it.

“What is it?””

“Everything.””

We connected it to the computer.

Files appeared.

Hundreds of them.

Messages.

Recordings.

Financial transfers.

Then one folder caught my attention.

The name made my heart stop.

*Claire.*

Nobody spoke.

My father opened it.

Inside were years of information.

My school records.

My jobs.

My relationships.

My entire life.

Someone had been watching me.

Since I was a child.

Then we opened the final file.

A recording.

A woman’s voice.

My aunt.

“I told you, the girl is perfect.””

A man answered.

“And Ryan?””

“He’ll do whatever we need.””

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

“He loves her.””

My aunt laughed.

“That’s why he’s useful.””

I felt sick.

Then came the sentence that destroyed everything.

“Once Claire gives birth, the inheritance transfers.””

My father stopped the recording.

Nobody moved.

Because we finally understood.

The baby wasn’t the end of their plan.

My daughter was the key.

And according to the files…

The transfer date was not after my birth.

May you like

It was after hers.

Only three weeks away.
