Chapter 8: The Person Who Signed Away My Future
I stared at the signature.
I couldn’t understand it.
The letters blurred together.
My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
“Who signed this?””
The detective looked at the paper.
“Your cousin Mark Bennett.””
My breath disappeared.
Again.
Mark.
The same person who had been helping Ryan.
The same person who had hugged me at my baby shower.
The same person who called me “little sister.””
“No,” I whispered.
My father took the document.
His face hardened as he read it.
“What exactly did he sign?””
The detective explained.
“Nothing legally binding regarding custody. But it appears he was acting as a witness for a private agreement between your husband and a third party.””
“A third party?”” my mother asked.
The detective nodded.
“Yes.””
My hands trembled.
“Who?””
The detective looked at me.
“That’s what we’re trying to determine.””
Ryan’s plan suddenly looked bigger than I thought.
It wasn’t just about my house.
It wasn’t just about Diane moving in.
There was something else.
Something hidden.
My father looked at me.
“Claire, did Ryan ever talk about your baby’s name?””
The question surprised me.
“What?””
“Answer me.””
I thought back.
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
I swallowed.
“He wanted to name her after his mother.””
My father’s expression changed.
“And you?””
“I said no.””
My mother slowly looked at him.
“Evelyn?””
My father didn’t answer.
I noticed.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Diane has been trying to control this child from the beginning.””
“Yes.””
“But names aren’t the only thing people fight over.””
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“No.””
The detective watched my reaction.
“Mrs. Bennett, did your husband ever mention wanting his mother to move in permanently?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
“Months ago.””
“Before or after your pregnancy?””
“After.””
The detective wrote something down.
“Interesting.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
He hesitated.
Then said:
“Because we found messages between Ryan and Diane discussing guardianship.””
My stomach dropped.
“Guardianship?””
My mother stood immediately.
“What kind of guardianship?””
The detective looked serious.
“They were discussing what would happen if you became ‘unable to care for the child.’”
The room went silent.
I felt sick.
They weren’t just trying to take my house.
They were preparing to take my daughter.
My daughter.
The little girl who wasn’t even born yet.
My father’s voice became cold.
“Where is Ryan now?””
The detective answered.
“He left the station about twenty minutes ago.””
“Did he know about these documents?””
“Yes.””
My father looked at me.
“He’s running.””
I stared at the floor.
I couldn’t believe the man I married had become someone I needed protection from.
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
The screen showed a message.
From Ryan.
I didn’t want to open it.
But I did.
*Ryan: We need to talk alone. Please. I can explain everything.*
My father immediately shook his head.
“No.””
My mother looked at me.
“Claire, you don’t owe him anything.””
I knew that.
But there was something bothering me.
A question I couldn’t ignore.
Why was Ryan still trying to explain?
If he was only protecting himself, why come back?
Why risk facing my family?
I typed one sentence.
*Where are you?*
The reply came instantly.
*At the place where we first met.*
My heart stopped.
The coffee shop.
The place where Ryan told me our story began.
I looked at my mother.
“I need to go.””
“No,” my father said.
“I need answers.””
My mother studied my face.
She knew arguing wouldn’t work.
Finally, she nodded.
“But you don’t go alone.””
An hour later, I sat across from Ryan in the quiet corner of the coffee shop where he once asked me to marry him.
The same table.
The same window.
A different person.
Ryan looked exhausted.
“I know you hate me.””
I didn’t answer.
He looked down.
“I deserve that.””
For a moment, I saw the man I loved.
Then I remembered everything.
“What do you want, Ryan?””
He took a deep breath.
“To tell you the truth.””
I almost laughed.
“Now?””
“Yes.””
“After you planned to take my home?””
His face tightened.
“That wasn’t my plan.””
“Then whose was it?””
Ryan looked toward the window.
And then he said something I never expected.
“Your mother knows.””
I froze.
“Knows what?””
He looked back at me.
“The reason your family and mine have been enemies for twenty-five years.””
I stared.
“Ryan.””
His voice dropped.
“My father didn’t lose everything because of your mother.””
“Then why?””
He leaned closer.
“Because someone inside your mother’s organization betrayed him.””
I felt cold.
“Who?””
Ryan looked terrified.
And then he whispered a name.
May you like
A name that made my entire family history collapse.
“Your father.””
