Chapter 9: The Last Recording
I replayed the video three times.
Each time, Vanessa's face became clearer.
She stood beside Maya's mother's car in the rain, holding an umbrella.
The timestamp read:
*October 14, 2014 — 10:31 PM.*
The exact night Maya's mother died.
Maya stared at the screen.
“No.””
Denise whispered, “We need to watch the whole thing.””
I pressed play.
The video showed Vanessa walking toward the driver's side window.
Maya's mother was still inside the car.
They appeared to argue.
No sound.
Just rain hitting the windshield.
Then Vanessa stepped backward.
A second figure appeared behind her.
A man.
Tall.
Dark coat.
He walked toward the car.
The image blurred for a moment.
Then the man opened the driver's door.
Maya's mother climbed out.
She was holding something.
A small black box.
She handed it to Vanessa.
I leaned closer.
The box was the same size as the one we had found in the safe deposit records.
“What is that?”” Maya asked.
“I don't know.””
The man reached for it.
Maya's mother refused.
He grabbed her arm.
Vanessa stepped between them.
Then the video cut.
I froze.
“That's it?””
Denise nodded.
“That's all?””
“Maybe not.””
She moved the playback slider forward.
The final thirty seconds contained only darkness.
Then a voice.
Maya's mother's voice.
“You'll never get away with this.””
A man's voice answered.
“You already know I have.””
Then a crash.
The recording ended.
Maya was crying.
“Who was filming this?””
Denise pointed toward the corner.
A small symbol appeared on the screen.
A security company logo.
“This wasn't private footage,” she said.
“It was traffic surveillance.””
I looked at her.
“Then why did nobody find it?””
“Because someone removed it from the evidence file.””
“Who?””
Denise didn't answer.
I knew.
Someone with access.
Someone who knew about the investigation.
Someone connected to the police.
My phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Richard's voice.
“Daniel.””
I stood.
“Where are you?””
“You've been digging through things you don't understand.””
“You killed her.””
Silence.
Then a quiet laugh.
“No.””
“You were there.””
“Yes.””
“You threatened her.””
“Yes.””
“You wanted Maya.””
“Yes.””
My hands tightened.
“Why?””
“Because your daughter inherited something far more valuable than money.””
“What?””
“The truth.””
Maya stepped closer.
Richard heard her.
“Maya.””
She took the phone.
“What do you want from me?””
“I want what your mother took.””
“What did she take?””
“The original.””
“Original what?””
“The ledger.””
Maya looked at me.
“What ledger?””
Richard answered.
“The one proving who owns everything.””
Denise's face changed.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
“What?””
“The trust wasn't just money.””
Richard continued.
“Your mother found the ledger before she died.””
“What does it contain?”” I asked.
“Names.””
“Whose?””
“Everyone who was paid.””
“For what?””
Richard laughed.
“You're still thinking this was about fraud.””
“What was it about?””
“The people who were supposed to protect your family.””
I looked at Denise.
Richard said, “You trust Denise?””
I didn't answer.
“You shouldn't.””
Denise shook her head.
“Don't listen to him.””
Richard continued.
“She was the first person to contact your wife.””
I turned toward Denise.
“Is that true?””
Denise's eyes closed.
“Yes.””
Maya stepped back.
“You knew Vanessa before Dad did?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“To warn her.””
“About what?””
“About Richard.””
Richard laughed.
“She was working for me.””
Denise snapped, “I was undercover.””
“For seven years?””
“I was trying to build a case.””
“And you failed.””
The line went silent.
Then Richard said:
“Daniel, ask your wife where she was the night Maya's mother died.””
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Vanessa had lied about that night.
I knew it now.
I called the station.
“Put Vanessa on.””
A few minutes later, she came onto the line.
“Daniel?””
“Where were you the night Maya's mother died?””
Silence.
“Vanessa.””
“I already told you.””
“You lied.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“You were at the crash.””
She started crying.
“Who told you?””
“I saw the video.””
Another silence.
Then:
“I was there.””
Maya closed her eyes.
“Did you kill her?””
“No.””
“Did Richard?””
“No.””
“Then who?””
Vanessa's voice became barely audible.
“She did.””
Maya opened her eyes.
“Who?””
“Your mother.””
I felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?””
“She wasn't supposed to die.””
“Then what happened?””
“She drove away.””
“And?””
“Richard followed her.””
“Then who caused the crash?””
Vanessa sobbed.
“Your mother.””
“That's impossible.””
“She turned the wheel.””
“Why?””
“Because she saw what was coming.””
“What?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Tell me.””
“She was trying to save you.””
“From whom?””
“From Richard.””
I looked at Denise.
“Why would she crash her own car?””
“She didn't.””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“Richard pushed her car.””
The line went dead.
I called again.
No answer.
Then Denise suddenly shouted.
“Daniel!””
I turned.
The video on the computer had changed.
The file was playing again.
But this time, there was an extra thirty seconds.
A hidden section.
The image showed Vanessa standing beside the wrecked car.
She wasn't alone.
Someone stood behind her.
A woman.
Claire.
Alive.
Claire leaned toward Vanessa and handed her something.
A key.
Vanessa took it.
Then Claire looked directly into the camera.
Her lips moved.
No sound.
I paused the video.
Denise leaned toward the screen.
“What did she say?””
I replayed the frame.
Claire's mouth moved slowly.
I read the words.
*“He knows.””*
Then she pointed toward Vanessa.
*“She doesn't.””*
The video ended.
Maya stared at the screen.
“So Vanessa wasn't the person controlling the camera.””
“No,” I said.
“She was being watched too.””
Denise nodded.
“Exactly.””
I looked at the hidden file details.
Created date.
Modified date.
The file had been uploaded to the camera system this morning.
After the tuition money disappeared.
Someone had inserted it deliberately.
I checked the source.
My blood went cold.
The upload came from a device registered to…
*Maya Carter.*
Maya stepped backward.
“I didn't do that.””
“I know.””
“But it says my device.””
I looked at the camera log.
Then at the old tablet.
Then at Maya.
Someone had cloned her device.
Someone had access to everything.
Her phone.
The camera.
The bank records.
The trust.
I opened the last metadata field.
There was an IP address.
And beneath it, a location.
Not our house.
Not the bank.
Not Richard's office.
A hospital.
I stared at the screen.
“What?””
Denise looked over my shoulder.
“That's impossible.””
“What?””
“That hospital closed eleven years ago.””
Maya whispered, “Why would someone upload the video from there?””
I didn't know.
Then my phone buzzed.
A text from Claire.
*COME ALONE.*
Another message followed.
*I KNOW WHO HAS THE LEDGER.*
Then a third.
*AND YOU'VE BEEN TALKING TO HIM ALL DAY.*
I looked at Denise.
She was already staring at me.
“What does it say?””
I showed her.
Her face went white.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She pointed to the hospital location.
“That isn't where the file was uploaded.””
“Then what is it?””
“It's where the device was registered.””
I frowned.
“To whom?””
Denise whispered the name.
“Your mother.””
My heart stopped.
May you like
My mother had been dead for seventeen years.
And according to the system, her device had just accessed our camera.
