Chapter 1: The Missing Tuition

The strangest part about my daughter’s missing tuition money wasn’t that it disappeared.

It was that someone had erased the one thing that could have told us exactly who took it.

The camera.

I noticed it on a Tuesday morning while standing at the kitchen counter, stirring cold coffee I had forgotten to drink.

Our living room security camera normally faced the oak table where Maya kept her laptop, textbooks, and the small lockbox where we stored important documents. But that morning, the camera was pointing at the wall.

Not slightly turned.

Not crooked.

Completely turned.

The lens stared at a framed photograph of Maya at graduation.

I lowered my mug.

“Why is the camera looking at the wall?””

Maya looked up from the table.

She had been sitting there with her laptop open, one hand pressed against her forehead. Her eyes were red, and there was a stack of university forms beside her.

“What?””

“The camera.””

She followed my gaze.

Her face changed.

“Dad…”

She stood so quickly that her chair scraped against the hardwood.

“When did you notice that?””

“Just now.””

Maya walked closer to the camera.

She reached up but stopped before touching it.

“It was facing the table yesterday.””

“You're sure?””

“I checked it last night.””

That sentence made my stomach tighten.

“What were you checking?””

Maya hesitated.

Then she looked at me.

“My tuition money is gone.””

The kitchen suddenly felt too quiet.

“What do you mean, gone?””

“The envelope.””

“What envelope?””

“The one you gave me.””

I stared at her.

Three weeks earlier, I had withdrawn twelve thousand dollars in cash from my savings account. Maya needed it for her upcoming tuition payment, and although I normally preferred bank transfers, she had been dealing with an administrative problem at school. We had agreed she would keep the money in the lockbox until the university confirmed the payment instructions.

“You put it in the lockbox?””

“Yes.””

“And now?””

“It's empty.””

I put my coffee down.

“Did you open it yourself?””

“Last night.””

“Maybe you moved the money.””

“I didn't.””

“Maya, think carefully.””

“I did.””

Her voice cracked.

“I counted it twice.””

I looked toward the living room.

The lockbox sat exactly where it always had, underneath a pile of old magazines on the bottom shelf of the bookcase.

“Who knew about the money?””

Maya swallowed.

“You. Me. Vanessa.””

Vanessa.

My wife.

Maya's stepmother.

For twelve years, Vanessa had lived in our house. She knew where everything was. She knew our routines, our passwords, our schedules.

But she had never been particularly interested in Maya's finances.

At least, that's what I had believed.

“When did you tell Vanessa?”” I asked.

“I didn't.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“I didn't tell her.””

“Then how would she know?””

Maya stared at the floor.

“She already knew.””

Before I could ask what that meant, footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Vanessa appeared in the kitchen wearing a cream-colored robe, holding a phone in one hand.

She looked at me.

Then at Maya.

Then at the camera.

It lasted less than a second.

But I saw it.

A tiny flicker of recognition.

Her fingers tightened around the phone.

“What's going on?”” she asked.

I kept my voice calm.

“Maya's tuition money is missing.””

Vanessa blinked.

“How much?””

The question came too quickly.

Maya looked at her.

“Twelve thousand.””

Vanessa's eyebrows lifted.

“Twelve thousand dollars?””

“Yes,” I said.

She exhaled.

“Oh my God.””

Then she did something strange.

She looked toward the living room camera again.

I watched her eyes move to it.

Then away.

“Have you checked the footage?”” she asked.

Maya answered before I could.

“That's the problem.””

Vanessa frowned.

“What problem?””

“The camera was moved.””

Vanessa's mouth opened slightly.

“Moved?””

“It's pointing at the wall.””

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa gave a nervous little laugh.

“Well, maybe it malfunctioned.””

“It didn't,” Maya said.

Vanessa looked at her.

“How would you know?””

“Because I checked it yesterday.””

The room went still.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked at Maya.

Then she turned toward me.

“Why are you looking at me like that?””

“I haven't said anything.””

“You don't have to.””

Her voice had sharpened.

I stepped toward the living room.

“I'm checking the footage.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“There's no point.””

I stopped.

“Why?””

“If the camera was moved, there probably isn't anything useful.””

I stared at her.

“You just said it might have malfunctioned.””

“Yes.””

“And now you're saying there's no point checking the footage?””

She folded her arms.

“I'm saying we should call someone who knows about these things.””

Maya quietly said, “Dad, check the footage.””

Vanessa's head snapped toward her.

“Maya, enough.””

“Why?””

“Because you're upset.””

“My money is missing.””

“And accusing people isn't going to bring it back.””

“I didn't accuse anyone.””

Vanessa's face reddened.

“You don't have to.””

I walked into the living room.

The lockbox was still underneath the magazines.

I picked it up.

It was unlocked.

Empty.

No broken hinges. No scratches. No sign anyone had forced it open.

That meant whoever took the money hadn't needed to break anything.

They had the key.

Or they knew the combination.

I turned toward the camera.

Its tiny green indicator was glowing.

Still recording.

I opened the security app on my phone.

The live feed appeared.

The camera showed the wall.

I tapped the history tab.

“Dad?”” Maya called.

“I'm checking.””

The recordings loaded.

There were hours of video.

But when I tried to open the previous night's footage, the timeline jumped.

11:42 p.m.

Then 1:17 a.m.

Nothing between.

I frowned.

“What happened?””

Maya came beside me.

“What?””

“The recording.””

Vanessa remained in the kitchen.

“What does it say?”” she asked.

I didn't answer.

I dragged my finger across the timeline.

11:42.

11:43.

11:44.

Then nothing.

The recording resumed at 1:17.

Exactly ninety-three minutes were missing.

Maya whispered, “Someone deleted it.””

I looked back at Vanessa.

She was standing perfectly still.

“Vanessa.””

“What?””

“Where were you last night?””

Her expression hardened.

“In bed.””

“What time?””

“Why?””

“What time?””

She looked at Maya.

Then at me.

“Around eleven.””

“Until?””

“Until morning.””

Maya slowly shook her head.

“No.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“What did you say?””

“I saw you.””

The silence that followed felt enormous.

Maya looked at me.

“You weren't in bed.””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“You're mistaken.””

“I saw you in the hallway.””

“When?””

“After midnight.””

Vanessa laughed once.

It wasn't a natural laugh.

It was the sound of someone buying time.

“You must have been dreaming.””

“I wasn't.””

I looked down at my phone.

The missing footage stared back at me.

Someone had moved the camera.

Someone had erased ninety-three minutes.

And Vanessa had just lied about where she was.

I was about to ask her another question when my phone buzzed.

A notification appeared from the security system.

*CAMERA SETTINGS CHANGED.*

I opened it.

The change had been made manually.

At 11:43 p.m.

From an authorized device.

May you like

And the device was registered to one person.

*Vanessa Carter.*
