Chapter 4: The Man Outside

The knocking stopped.

That silence was worse.

I stood with my hand inches from the doorknob, staring at the front door while the man's last words replayed in my head.

I'm here for the rest of Maya's money.

Behind me, Maya whispered, “Dad, don't.””

Vanessa was trembling.

Not pretending.

Not acting.

Actually trembling.

I turned toward her.

“Who is he?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

Denise gave a short, humorless laugh.

“Yes, you do.””

Vanessa glared at her.

“Not now.””

“Now is exactly when he needs to know.””

I looked back at the door.

“What's his name?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Richard.””

“Richard what?””

She didn't answer.

Denise did.

“Richard Hale.””

The name meant nothing to me.

I moved toward the window beside the door and lifted the curtain just enough to see outside.

A black SUV was parked across the street.

A man stood on our porch.

Late forties, maybe early fifties.

Gray coat.

Dark hair.

Leather gloves.

He wasn't impatient.

He wasn't pacing.

He simply stood there as though he already knew I would open the door.

I stepped back.

“I'm calling the police.””

Vanessa grabbed my sleeve.

“No.””

I pulled away.

“Why not?””

“Because you don't understand what he'll do.””

“Then explain.””

“I can't.””

“You've said that three times today.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.””

Maya stared at her.

“You've been saying that my whole life.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I mean it.””

“Then tell the truth.””

A fourth knock sounded.

This time, Richard spoke through the door.

“Daniel, I know Denise is inside.””

Denise closed her eyes.

“He knows.””

I looked at her.

“Knows what?””

“That I found you.””

I unlocked the door but didn't open it.

“Richard,” I called, “why are you here?””

His voice remained calm.

“Because your wife owes me money.””

Vanessa whispered, “Don't believe him.””

I called back, “How much?””

There was a pause.

“More than your daughter's twelve thousand.””

Maya stepped closer.

“How much?””

Richard answered.

“Everything Vanessa took.””

Vanessa suddenly snapped.

“I didn't take it from her!””

“You used it,” Richard said.

“I borrowed it!””

“And you promised to repay me.””

My head turned.

I stared at Vanessa.

“You borrowed Maya's money from him?””

“No.””

Richard laughed from outside.

“She didn't tell you?””

Vanessa's face collapsed.

I unlocked the door.

Denise immediately said, “Daniel, wait.””

But I opened it.

Richard stood there with his hands in his coat pockets.

He looked past me.

His eyes landed on Vanessa.

“You look tired.””

Vanessa said nothing.

I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.

“You're Richard Hale?””

“Yes.””

“Why are you here?””

“Because Vanessa stopped answering my calls.””

“She doesn't owe you anything.””

Richard looked at me.

“You really don't know.””

“Know what?””

He glanced toward the street.

Then back at me.

“Ask your wife where the $86,400 went.””

“I already know she used some of it to buy a house.””

Richard's expression changed slightly.

“Some?””

Denise opened the door behind me.

“She used more than some.””

Richard nodded.

“Exactly.””

I stepped closer.

“What was your role?””

He smiled faintly.

“I helped her move the money.””

My jaw tightened.

“So you stole it.””

“No.””

“You accessed a custodial account belonging to my daughter.””

“I never accessed anything.””

“Then what did you do?””

Richard pulled a folded document from his pocket.

“I provided Vanessa with a way to make the money disappear without triggering questions.””

I took the paper.

It was a loan agreement.

Vanessa's signature appeared at the bottom.

My stomach turned.

“Why would you do that?””

“Because she promised me a percentage.””

Vanessa opened the door wider.

“Richard, stop.””

He looked at her.

“You've had seven years to stop.””

I turned.

“Seven years?””

Richard nodded.

“That's how long I've been waiting.””

“For what?””

“For my money.””

I looked at the contract.

There was a clause highlighted in yellow.

If Vanessa failed to repay the loan, Richard could claim ownership of the rental property.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You borrowed money from him too?””

She nodded slowly.

“After I moved Maya's money.””

“Why?””

“I thought I could fix everything.””

“How?””

“My father was sick. The house was in foreclosure. There were debts…”

“You could have told me.””

“I was ashamed.””

“You stole from my daughter.””

“I know.””

Maya's voice came from the doorway.

“Did you take my money because you thought I wouldn't notice?””

Vanessa turned toward her.

“No.””

“Then why?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought I could replace it before you ever knew.””

Maya laughed bitterly.

“You had seven years.””

“I tried.””

“You didn't try hard enough.””

Richard cleared his throat.

“There's something else.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

“The twelve thousand wasn't a repayment.””

Vanessa froze.

I felt my chest tighten.

“What are you talking about?””

Richard looked at Denise.

“She hasn't told you.””

Denise stepped forward.

“Tell him.””

Richard reached into his coat and pulled out his phone.

He showed me a photograph of a bank transfer.

The recipient account wasn't Vanessa's.

It belonged to a company.

*Hale Financial Consulting.*

The transfer date was yesterday.

The amount was exactly $12,000.

My voice went quiet.

“You transferred Maya's tuition money to him.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Richard said, “She did.””

“I didn't authorize that.””

“You gave me access.””

“I gave you access years ago.””

“Which means I could still use the credentials.””

I stared at him.

“You transferred the money yourself?””

Richard smiled.

“Now you're asking the right question.””

Denise suddenly stepped between us.

“Daniel, get inside.””

Richard's smile disappeared.

“Too late.””

I heard an engine start.

The black SUV's passenger door opened.

Another person was sitting inside.

A woman.

I couldn't see her face.

But I saw her wrist.

A silver bracelet.

Not Vanessa's.

Different.

Denise grabbed my arm.

“Inside. Now.””

We rushed through the doorway.

I locked it.

Maya shut the curtains.

Vanessa stood frozen in the middle of the living room.

“Who was that woman?”” I asked.

Vanessa whispered, “I don't know.””

Denise looked at her.

“Yes, you do.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

Denise opened the folder.

She pulled out another photograph.

“This is the person who helped Vanessa create the account.””

I took the photograph.

It showed two women standing outside a bank.

One was Vanessa.

The other was someone I had never seen before.

But Maya recognized her immediately.

She whispered:

“That's my aunt.””

I looked at her.

“Your mother didn't have a sister.””

Maya's face had gone white.

“She wasn't my mother's sister.””

She pointed at the woman.

“She was yours.””

I stared at the photograph.

May you like

And suddenly, I understood why Denise had spent three years trying to find me.

Because the woman standing beside Vanessa was *my sister.*
