Chapter 8: Safe Deposit Box 417
We reached the bank forty minutes later.
The police had called ahead, and the manager was waiting behind the security desk.
Vanessa sat in the back of the patrol car outside while officers questioned her separately.
Maya stayed beside me.
Denise followed us through the lobby.
The manager, a nervous man named Paul, glanced at the police officer.
“Box 417 was accessed at 9:18 this morning.””
I frowned.
“That was before we discovered the money was missing.””
Paul nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who opened it?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“A woman using Mrs. Carter's driver's license.””
Vanessa's license.
“Did you see her?””
“I saw her on the security footage.””
“Can I see it?””
The officer nodded.
Paul led us into a small conference room.
He brought up the recording.
A woman entered the bank wearing a gray coat and sunglasses.
She approached the desk.
Removed her glasses.
And looked directly at the camera.
Maya gasped.
It was Claire.
I stared at the screen.
She had used Vanessa's identification.
But why?
Paul paused the recording.
“She was here for eleven minutes.””
“What did she take?””
“We don't know.””
“Why not?””
“She requested privacy.””
He looked at the officer.
“But there was one unusual thing.””
“What?””
“She didn't use the key.””
I frowned.
“Then how did she open the box?””
Paul hesitated.
“Her identification was enough.””
“That doesn't make sense.””
“It does if she had authorization.””
“Who authorized her?””
Paul pulled up the account records.
“That's the problem.””
He rotated the monitor toward me.
There were two authorized names.
Mine.
And Vanessa's.
Claire wasn't listed.
“Then how did she get access?””
Paul looked at the police officer.
“Someone added her authorization three years ago.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
He clicked the record.
The authorization had been entered manually.
The employee who processed it was listed.
The account holder signature was attached.
I stared at it.
It was mine.
But I hadn't signed it.
“That isn't my signature.””
Paul frowned.
“It was verified.””
“By whom?””
He clicked again.
A name appeared.
*Denise Morgan.*
I turned.
Denise was standing by the door.
“You authorized Claire?””
“No.””
“Your name is on the record.””
“It's a forgery.””
Paul looked between us.
“I don't understand.””
Denise walked to the desk.
“Neither do I.””
I stared at her.
“You've been helping me all day.””
“Yes.””
“You knew Claire was alive.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about the trust.””
“Yes.””
“You knew about Richard.””
“Yes.””
“And now your name is on the document that gave Claire access to my safe deposit box.””
Denise didn't defend herself.
Instead, she said, “Because I opened it.””
“What?””
“Three years ago.””
“Why?””
“To find out whether the original documents were still there.””
“Were they?””
She looked at me.
“No.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Then what was inside?””
“A recording.””
“What recording?””
“Your wife talking to Claire.””
Maya stepped forward.
“About what?””
Denise looked at her.
“Your mother's death.””
Maya's face went still.
“Play it.””
Denise shook her head.
“I don't have it.””
“Then who does?””
“Claire.””
I turned toward the bank manager.
“Can we access the box now?””
Paul nodded.
The police officer accompanied us into the vault.
The heavy steel door opened with a low mechanical groan.
Rows of numbered boxes stretched into darkness.
417 was near the bottom.
Paul inserted his key.
I inserted mine.
The lock clicked.
We opened the box.
It was empty.
Completely empty.
Maya stared inside.
“Everything is gone.””
Denise crouched beside the box.
“Not everything.””
She pointed to the back corner.
A small envelope was wedged behind the metal lining.
I pulled it out.
My name was written across it.
*DANIEL.*
I opened it.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a note.
I unfolded the note.
Three words.
*Ask Vanessa why.*
Maya looked at me.
“Why what?””
I didn't know.
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
“What?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“Where are you?””
“At the station.””
“Did you open the box?””
“No.””
“Someone used your identity.””
“I know.””
“Who?””
She was silent.
Then she said, “I think I know.””
“Who?””
“Richard.””
I looked at Denise.
Vanessa continued.
“He has access to my old identification records.””
“How?””
“I gave him copies years ago.””
“For what?””
“To open accounts.””
My stomach turned.
“Vanessa, what exactly were you involved in?””
She began crying.
“I told you. I was trying to fix everything.””
“Stop saying that.””
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because if I tell you, Maya will hate me.””
Maya was listening.
She took the phone from my hand.
“I already do.””
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“I'm sorry.””
Maya's eyes filled with tears.
“Who killed my mother?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Tell me.””
“I can't.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because the person who did it is closer than you think.””
Maya looked at me.
Vanessa continued.
“He didn't kill her because of the money.””
“Then why?””
“He killed her because she discovered who Maya's real father was.””
Maya's face went pale.
“Richard?””
Vanessa's voice broke.
“No.””
I stared at the phone.
“Then who?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Your brother.””
I stopped breathing.
I had no brother.
Only Claire.
At least, that's what I had always believed.
“Vanessa,” I said slowly, “I don't have a brother.””
She began sobbing.
“You do.””
Maya looked at me.
“Dad?””
I couldn't speak.
Vanessa continued.
“He changed his name.””
“To what?””
“Richard Hale.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Denise.
She was staring at the floor.
“You knew,” I whispered.
Denise shook her head.
“I suspected.””
My phone slipped from my hand.
Richard Hale wasn't Maya's biological father.
He was my brother.
The man who had been threatening Vanessa.
The man who had manipulated the trust.
The man who knew about the money.
And possibly the man who had killed Maya's mother.
I looked at the flash drive.
“What is on this?””
Denise answered quietly.
“The recording that can prove it.””
We returned to the conference room.
I connected the drive to the bank's computer.
One audio file appeared.
*FINAL_MEETING.mp3*
I clicked play.
Static filled the room.
Then a woman's voice.
Maya's mother's voice.
Weak.
Frightened.
“Claire, if you're hearing this, something has happened.””
Maya covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“I know who he is.””
A man's voice suddenly interrupted.
“You should have stayed out of it.””
Maya froze.
I recognized that voice.
Richard.
My brother.
The recording crackled.
Maya's mother whispered:
“You're not taking my daughter's money.””
Richard replied:
“I don't want her money.””
“Then what do you want?””
Silence.
Then Richard said:
“I want her.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Maya looked at me.
“Why would he want me?””
I didn't know.
Then the computer screen flashed.
A new file appeared.
It hadn't been there before.
*VIDEO_2014_FINAL.mp4*
Denise leaned closer.
“That's impossible.””
I clicked it.
The screen went black.
Then the image appeared.
A car.
A wet highway.
Maya's mother's car.
And standing beside it before the crash was someone wearing a silver bracelet.
The same bracelet we had found in our house.
Maya whispered:
“That isn't Claire.””
I looked at the screen.
The figure turned.
May you like
And the face became visible.
It was Vanessa.
