Chapter 5: The Sister I Buried

My sister had been dead for eleven years.

At least, that was what I believed.

I stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

The woman beside Vanessa had the same dark hair.

The same narrow jaw.

The same small scar above her eyebrow.

There was no mistake.

It was Claire.

My younger sister.

The woman whose funeral I had attended.

The woman whose ashes I had scattered beside our mother's grave.

The woman Vanessa had claimed never to have met.

I looked at my wife.

“Why is Claire in that photograph?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her lips trembled.

“I didn't know she was alive.””

Maya stepped forward.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I thought she was dead.””

Denise slammed the folder shut.

“That's a lie.””

Vanessa flinched.

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You met her three months before the transfer.””

“That isn't true.””

“I have the hotel records.””

Vanessa's face went blank.

I felt something inside me break.

“You met my sister?””

She looked at me.

“I can explain.””

“Start.””

“I didn't know how to tell you.””

“You had seven years.””

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

“Of what Claire would do.””

I laughed bitterly.

“My sister is dead.””

“No.””

The word came from Denise.

“She isn't.””

Maya covered her mouth.

I shook my head.

“This is impossible.””

Denise took out a copy of a driver's license.

The photograph was older, but unmistakable.

*Claire Carter.*

I stepped backward.

“No.””

“She changed her name after she disappeared,” Denise said.

“Why?””

“Because she was running from people.””

“What people?””

Denise looked at Richard's photograph.

“People like him.””

My hands tightened.

“Why would my sister disappear?””

Vanessa finally spoke.

“Because she was involved in something before you met me.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Money.””

“That isn't an answer.””

“Fraud. Loans. Shell companies. Things I didn't understand.””

Denise corrected her.

“You understood enough.””

Vanessa's eyes flashed.

“I was trying to save this family.””

“You were trying to save yourself.””

Maya stepped between them.

“Stop.””

Everyone went silent.

She looked at Vanessa.

“Tell me one thing.””

Vanessa nodded weakly.

“What did my mother leave me?””

Vanessa's face changed.

“A trust.””

“No.””

Maya's voice hardened.

“What did she really leave me?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“Evidence.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What evidence?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Your mother discovered that Claire and Richard were moving money through fake accounts.””

Denise nodded.

“She found records.””

“Where?”” I asked.

“In a safe deposit box.””

“Why didn't I know?””

“Because your mother died before she could tell you.””

I felt dizzy.

“What does this have to do with Maya?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Everything.””

Maya's eyes narrowed.

“Explain.””

“Your mother discovered the scheme because money had been moved through an account connected to you.””

“My account?””

“Not yet. A future trust.””

Denise placed another document on the table.

It showed a trust established in Maya's name shortly after her birth.

The beneficiary was Maya.

The trustee was her mother.

The successor trustee was…

Vanessa.

I stared at the page.

“You became the trustee after her death?””

Vanessa nodded.

“And you stole from it.””

“I borrowed.””

“You took eighty-six thousand dollars.””

“I intended to replace it.””

Maya shook her head.

“You keep saying that like it makes it okay.””

“It doesn't.””

“Then why did you do it?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“Because Claire came to me.””

I turned sharply.

“Why?””

“She said if I didn't give her access to the trust, she would expose everything.””

“What everything?””

Vanessa's voice dropped.

“She said your mother wasn't killed in an accident.””

Nobody breathed.

Maya whispered, “What?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I didn't know whether it was true.””

I stared at Denise.

“Was it?””

Denise didn't answer.

That told me enough.

I sat down.

My wife's words echoed in my head.

Your mother wasn't killed in an accident.

Maya's mother had died in a car crash on a rainy night.

For years, I had accepted it.

There had been police reports.

Insurance paperwork.

A funeral.

Grief.

But never a real explanation for why her car had left the road on an empty stretch of highway.

I looked at Denise.

“What did you find?””

She opened the folder.

“Your daughter's mother was investigating a financial network.””

“Whose?””

“Claire's.””

I shook my head.

“My sister?””

“Claire wasn't the person running it.””

“Then who was?””

Denise looked toward the front window.

“Richard.””

I stood.

“Then why was Claire helping him?””

“She wasn't.””

Denise removed another photograph.

This one showed Claire entering a bank.

A timestamp was visible.

Three days before Maya's mother died.

“Claire was trying to get evidence.””

I stared at the photograph.

“What happened?””

“She was discovered.””

“By Richard?””

“Yes.””

“And my wife?””

Denise looked at Vanessa.

“Vanessa was caught in the middle.””

Vanessa whispered, “I didn't know what to do.””

“So you took Maya's money?””

“I was threatened.””

“By Claire?””

“No.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“By Richard.””

A knock sounded at the door.

Everyone froze.

I looked toward the camera.

The lens was still pointed at the wall.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

*YOU HAVE TEN MINUTES TO GIVE US THE FOLDER.*

I looked at Denise.

“Who sent that?””

She didn't need to answer.

Another message appeared.

*OR MAYA LEARNS WHAT HER MOTHER DID.*

Maya took the phone from my hand.

“What did my mother do?””

I tried to take it back.

“Maya—”

“No.””

She stared at the screen.

“What did she do?””

Denise's face had gone pale.

Vanessa began crying.

Maya looked at all three of us.

“Someone tell me the truth.””

Denise finally spoke.

“Your mother discovered who was behind the fraud.””

“Who?””

Denise looked at me.

“Your father.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What?””

Maya stared at Denise.

“My father?””

Denise shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“Not Daniel.””

Then she pointed toward the hallway.

“Your father was never Daniel.””

Maya frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Denise pulled a birth certificate from the folder.

The name printed under *Father* was one I had never seen.

And beside it was a surname I recognized from Richard's documents.

Denise whispered:

“Your biological father is Richard Hale.””

Vanessa suddenly screamed.

“No!””

May you like

And somewhere upstairs, a floorboard creaked.

Someone was in the house.
