Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
Daddy didn't speak for several seconds.
Then he asked Catherine to send him the access logs.
When the message arrived, he studied the document at the kitchen table while I colored beside him.
Vanessa's name appeared twice.
The first access had occurred three weeks earlier.
The second had occurred the night of his birthday.
Daddy rubbed his forehead.
“She knew the hospital records were real,” he murmured.
“She knew there was no baby switch.””
I looked up from my drawing.
“Does that mean everything is okay?””
He forced a smile.
“It means we're getting closer to the truth.””
But I could tell he was worried.
He called Ethan and asked him to come over. Then he contacted Catherine, who arranged to meet us at First National Bank the following morning.
Before bed, Daddy checked the locks on every door and installed a temporary alarm on my bedroom window.
I watched him from the doorway.
“Daddy, are you scared of Vanessa?””
He stopped adjusting the alarm.
“No, sweetheart. I'm concerned about what she's willing to do.””
“Because she wants my money?””
“Possibly.””
“Can she take it?””
“No. The attorney is protecting the trust, and we won't let anyone make decisions about your inheritance without proper legal authority.””
I hesitated.
“Would you still love me if I didn't have any money?””
Daddy looked genuinely shocked.
“Amara, I'd love you if you lived in a cardboard box and owned nothing but that teddy bear.””
I hugged the bear tightly.
“Good.””
He kissed my forehead.
“Now go to sleep. Tomorrow, we're going to find some answers.””
The next morning, Catherine met us at the bank.
After reviewing the estate documents and verifying the necessary authority, the bank manager escorted us into a private room.
Daddy inserted the small key Jonathan had left behind.
The safety deposit box opened.
Inside were three sealed envelopes, a flash drive, and a thick stack of financial records.
Catherine examined the envelopes.
One was addressed to Daddy.
One was addressed to Ethan.
The third bore Richard Cole's name.
Daddy opened his envelope first.
It contained a letter from Evelyn.
Marcus, if you've reached this box, then I wasn't able to explain everything myself. Please know that I never doubted your love for Amara. The confusion surrounding her birth was created deliberately, but the truth is simpler than the people responsible want you to believe.
Daddy stopped reading.
He looked at me.
“Your mother wanted you to know that I was always your father.””
I smiled a little.
Then he continued.
Richard discovered that Jonathan had copied financial records proving that the foundation had been used to conceal fraudulent payments. Jonathan feared his father would destroy the evidence, so he asked me to keep a copy.
The hospital records were altered to create confusion about Jonathan's whereabouts and his connection to our family. No child was exchanged. No paternity was changed. The false records were intended to make me appear unstable if I ever accused Richard publicly.
Daddy's hand trembled.
Catherine took the letter and carefully placed it beside the flash drive.
“This could be significant evidence,” she said.
“We'll need to authenticate it and have the financial records reviewed by an independent forensic accountant.””
Daddy nodded.
Then he opened Ethan's envelope.
Inside was a short note.
You were right to be afraid, but fear is what allowed Richard to continue. If I cannot expose him myself, please give the evidence to Marcus.
Ethan lowered his head.
“I should have done that years ago.””
Daddy looked at him.
“Yes. You should have.””
There was no shouting this time.
Just disappointment.
Ethan accepted it without defending himself.
Catherine opened the third envelope.
Richard's name was written in bold letters.
Inside was a single sheet of paper.
It contained a list of dates, account numbers, and payments made to several individuals associated with the medical research foundation.
At the bottom was a handwritten message from Evelyn.
Richard, you can threaten me, discredit me, or hide behind your money. But you cannot change what happened. I have copies of the original records, and if anything happens to me or my daughter, the evidence will be released.
Daddy read the sentence twice.
“That's why he was afraid of Evelyn.””
Catherine nodded.
“And it may explain why Vanessa was trying to gain control of the trust. She could have been looking for the original evidence.””
Daddy looked at the flash drive.
“Can we see what's on it?””
“Not here,” Catherine replied.
“We'll create a forensic copy and preserve the original.””
As we left the bank, Daddy's phone rang.
The number was unfamiliar.
He answered.
“Marcus Johnson.””
A man's voice replied.
“Mr. Johnson, my name is James Carter. I believe we need to talk.””
Daddy stopped walking.
“Who are you?””
“I think you know who I am.””
Daddy glanced at the photograph on his phone.
“Jonathan Cole.””
The man was silent for a moment.
Then he said, “Yes.””
Daddy's expression hardened.
“You've been alive all these years, and you let everyone believe you were dead.””
“I had reasons.””
“My wife died believing she had to protect our daughter from your father.””
“I know.””
“Then why didn't you come forward?””
Jonathan exhaled.
“Because Richard had people watching me. When I learned Evelyn had died, I wanted to return, but I was afraid he would use Amara to force me to surrender the evidence.””
Daddy's voice rose.
“She was a child! She was never your responsibility to abandon!””
“I know that,” Jonathan replied quietly.
“And I regret it every day.””
Daddy stared at the pavement.
“Where are you?””
“I'm in Chicago. I'll fly to you tonight if you agree to meet me.””
Daddy hesitated.
Catherine stepped closer and whispered, “Tell him to meet us at my office. We'll arrange appropriate security.””
Daddy repeated the instructions.
Jonathan agreed.
Then Daddy asked, “Did you know Vanessa was trying to get control of Amara's inheritance?””
“Yes.””
“Did you help her?””
“No. But I know who did.””
Daddy's face darkened.
“Who?””
“Richard. He promised Vanessa that if she gained control of the trust, he would give her enough money to start a new life. He believed she could use her marriage to you to get access to Evelyn's evidence.””
Daddy closed his eyes.
“And Vanessa agreed?””
“I believe so.””
Daddy ended the call.
For the rest of the day, he barely spoke.
That evening, Catherine arrived at our house with an investigator who specialized in financial fraud. They reviewed the recovered documents and identified several suspicious transfers between Richard's companies and accounts associated with Vanessa.
The evidence suggested a deliberate attempt to obtain control of the trust, but Catherine warned Daddy that the transfers would need independent verification before any conclusions could be drawn.
Then the doorbell rang.
A courier stood outside holding a large envelope.
Daddy signed for it and brought it into the living room.
There was no return address.
Inside lay a printed photograph of me leaving the bank with Daddy.
Someone had taken it from across the street.
On the back, a message had been written in black ink.
*STOP LOOKING INTO THE PAST, OR YOUR DAUGHTER WILL PAY FOR IT.*
Daddy's face went white.
He immediately called the police and reported the threat. Catherine secured the envelope, and the investigator began documenting the circumstances surrounding its delivery.
I stood beside Daddy, clutching his hand.
“Are they going to hurt me?””
He knelt in front of me.
“No one is going to get near you without going through me and the people protecting us.””
“But why do they hate me?””
Daddy pulled me into his arms.
“They don't hate you, sweetheart. They want something, and they're trying to frighten us into giving it to them.””
He held me tightly.
Then his phone rang again.
It was Jonathan.
“Marcus,” he said urgently, “I just received word that Richard knows about the safety deposit box.””
Daddy stood.
“How?””
“Because someone inside the bank contacted him. He's moving tonight.””
“Moving where?””
Jonathan's voice dropped.
“To the house where he kept the original documents. If he gets there before the authorities, he may destroy everything.””
Daddy looked at Catherine.
She was already reaching for her phone.
“Tell me the address,” Daddy said.
Jonathan gave it to him.
Then he added, “Marcus, there's one more thing you need to know. Richard isn't running because of the money.””
Daddy's jaw tightened.
“Then why?””
Jonathan's answer was barely audible.
“Because the original documents contain proof that someone in his own family helped him commit the fraud.””
Daddy looked toward me.
“Who?””
Jonathan hesitated.
May you like
Then he said the name that shattered what little trust remained.
“Vanessa.””
