Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Note

Nobody moved.

The birthday candles flickered beneath the chandelier. Somewhere in the kitchen, an ice maker dropped a few cubes into its tray.

Daddy stared at the frozen image on Daniel's tablet.

Vanessa stared at Daddy.

And I stared at both of them, trying to understand why the words real father had made the entire room feel colder.

I knew who my father was.

His name was Marcus Johnson. He made pancakes shaped like dinosaurs on Sunday mornings. He tucked me into bed when thunderstorms rattled the windows. He had taught me how to ride a bicycle in the driveway, running behind me until I finally balanced on my own.

He was the man holding me now.

So why had Vanessa written that note?

“Explain it,” Daddy said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“This is a private family matter.””

“You made it public when you tried to erase the recording.””

“I didn't mean what it sounds like.””

“Then tell us what it means.””

She looked around the room.

Several guests lowered their eyes. Others openly watched her. Daniel stood beside the laptop, one hand resting on the recovered footage.

Vanessa drew a shaky breath.

“Marcus, you know I love you. I love Amara. I've done everything for this family.””

Daddy gave a short, humorless laugh.

“You locked an eight-year-old in a room and told her nobody wanted to hear her cry.””

“I lost my temper!””

“That's not an answer.””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Amara, darling, you know I would never hurt you.””

I pressed my face against Daddy's jacket.

“You hurt my arm.””

She flinched, but only for a second.

Then her expression hardened.

“You were pulling away from me.””

Daddy's voice dropped.

“Stop blaming her.””

Vanessa's hands curled into fists.

For the first time, the polished woman who always smelled like expensive perfume looked genuinely frightened.

“Fine,” she said.

“You want the truth? Then perhaps you should ask yourself why your first wife never told you everything about Amara's birth.””

Daddy went completely still.

My mother, Evelyn, had died when I was six. Daddy rarely talked about the hospital, except to say that the doctors had done everything they could.

He had kept her wedding ring in a small velvet box on his bedside table.

Whenever I missed her, he let me hold it.

“What are you talking about?”” he asked.

Vanessa's eyes glistened.

“Evelyn had secrets.””

“Don't use my wife's name to distract me.””

“I'm not distracting you. I'm telling you that she wasn't the perfect woman you remember.””

Daddy lowered me carefully onto the sofa and crouched in front of me.

“Sweetheart, stay here with Daniel for a minute, okay?””

I caught his hand.

“Are you going to stop being my daddy?””

His expression broke.

He pulled me into his arms.

“Never. Nothing anyone says tonight can change that. Do you understand?””

I nodded against his chest.

He kissed my hair before standing.

“Now,” he said to Vanessa, “tell me what you know.””

She glanced at Daniel's laptop.

“The note was never meant to be seen.””

“That much is obvious.””

“I found something among Evelyn's things several months ago. A letter. It suggested that Amara's biological father might not be you.””

The words landed like a glass shattering on a tile floor.

Daddy didn't speak.

Vanessa continued quickly.

“I didn't know what to do with it. I was afraid you'd think I was trying to destroy your family, so I investigated privately.””

“You investigated my daughter?””

“I was protecting you!””

“From what?””

“From being deceived!””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Vanessa, do you have that letter?””

She shot him a furious look.

“This has nothing to do with you.””

Daddy raised one hand.

“Answer the question.””

Vanessa hesitated.

Then she nodded.

“It's in my study.””

“Go get it.””

She didn't move.

“Marcus, please. Not in front of everyone.””

“You had no trouble humiliating my daughter in front of a security camera.””

“That's different!””

“How?””

Her lips trembled.

For a second, I thought she might cry.

Then she looked at Daddy with an expression I couldn't understand.

“You don't know what I sacrificed to be with you.””

Daddy's face hardened.

“This isn't about you.””

“Everything has been about Evelyn since the day I married you!”” Vanessa shouted.

“Her photographs. Her clothes. Her daughter.

Even your precious birthday traditions! I can't walk through this house without feeling like I'm living in the shadow of a dead woman!””

The room fell silent.

There it was.

Not a broken door handle.

Not a sick child.

Not an attempt to protect a party.

Jealousy.

Raw and ugly.

Vanessa had wanted me upstairs because my presence reminded her that Daddy had loved someone before her.

Daddy slowly shook his head.

“You were jealous of an eight-year-old.””

“I wanted a family of my own!””

“You married a man who already had one.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“You never loved me the way you loved her.””

Daddy didn't answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet.

“I tried to build a life with you. But I never imagined I'd have to protect my daughter from you.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Then she looked at me.

“You have no idea what your mother did.””

I shrank back.

Daddy stepped between us again.

“One more word to her, and this conversation is over.””

Vanessa stared at him for several seconds before turning toward the stairs.

“I'll get the letter.””

As she disappeared upstairs, Daniel crouched beside me.

“Hey, Amara,” he said gently.

“Would you like some water?””

I shook my head.

“Mr. Daniel?””

“Yeah?””

“If my daddy isn't my real daddy, will I have to live somewhere else?””

His face softened.

“No, sweetheart. Nobody gets to decide that because of a piece of paper.””

I looked toward Daddy.

He was standing by the fireplace, staring at the floor. His hands were clenched at his sides.

For the first time in my life, he looked afraid.

A few minutes later, Vanessa returned holding a cream-colored envelope.

She placed it on the table.

“There,” she said.

“Read it.””

Daddy opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter, several old hospital documents, and a folded page bearing my mother's signature.

He read the first paragraph.

Then he sat down.

“Where did you get these?””

“From Evelyn's old desk.””

“Why didn't you tell me months ago?””

“Because I needed to know whether the information was true.””

Daddy looked at her sharply.

“And did you find out?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“I hired someone to investigate.””

Daniel stared at her.

“You hired a private investigator to investigate a child?””

“I hired someone to verify a family matter!””

Daddy unfolded the hospital document.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then stopped.

He read it again, his lips parting slightly.

“What is this?”” he whispered.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“It's the truth.””

Daddy turned the paper toward the light.

The document was a paternity test report dated several years before Evelyn died.

At the bottom was a handwritten notation.

*Paternity confirmed: Marcus Johnson.*

Daddy frowned.

“This says I'm her biological father.””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

“That can't be right.””

“You said Evelyn's letter proved otherwise.””

“It did!””

Daddy pulled out the handwritten page and began reading aloud.

“Marcus, if you're reading this, it means I finally found the courage to tell you about the mistake made at the hospital…”

He stopped.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

Vanessa leaned over his shoulder.

“No. That's not the letter I found.””

Daddy looked up.

“What?””

“The letter I found didn't say that.””

Daniel took a step closer.

“Then where is the original?””

Vanessa's eyes darted toward the hallway.

“I don't know.””

Daddy laid the documents on the table.

The hospital report appeared genuine, but the handwritten note contained a reference number that didn't match the one printed on the medical records.

Daniel noticed it, too.

“Marcus,” he said slowly, “these papers may not belong together.””

Vanessa backed away.

Daddy stood.

“Who gave you the letter you supposedly found?””

She shook her head.

“Please don't do this.””

“Who?””

“I can't tell you.””

Daddy's voice rose.

“You locked my daughter in her room, tried to erase the evidence, and brought a forged-looking document into my house. You will tell me who gave it to you.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

Then she whispered five words that made Daniel drop his tablet onto the sofa.

“Your brother gave it to me.””

Daddy stopped breathing for a moment.

My father's younger brother, Ethan, hadn't visited our house in almost a year. Daddy said they had argued about money and that Ethan had moved to another state.

But I remembered something else.

Three months earlier, Ethan had called me while Daddy was at work.

He'd asked whether Vanessa was home.

When I said yes, he told me not to mention the call to anyone.

I had promised.

Now, listening to Vanessa, I remembered his final words.

If she ever asks about your mother, don't believe anything she tells you.

I tugged at Daddy's sleeve.

“Daddy?””

He looked down.

“What is it, sweetheart?””

I swallowed hard.

“Uncle Ethan called me a long time ago. He said Vanessa might tell lies about Mommy.””

Daddy stared at me.

Then his phone began vibrating on the table.

The screen displayed a name none of us had expected to see that night.

*Ethan Johnson.*

Daddy answered without taking his eyes off Vanessa.

“Ethan,” he said coldly.

“You have some explaining to do.””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then my uncle spoke.

“Marcus, listen carefully. Whatever Vanessa tells you about Amara's father, don't believe her.””

Daddy's expression darkened.

“Why?””

May you like

Ethan's voice cracked.

“Because the truth is worse than you think. And Vanessa isn't the only person who's been lying to you.””
