Chapter 8: The Son Who Was Never Supposed to Exist
Daddy asked Helen to repeat herself.
She did, slowly.
“The man holding your daughter was Richard Cole's son, Jonathan. He was alive when Amara was born. His death was reported several years later.””
Daddy glanced at Catherine.
“Can that be verified?””
Catherine nodded toward the phone.
“Ask her for the hospital's original records and the name of the attending physician.””
Daddy returned to the call.
“Ms. Brooks, I need you to tell me everything you remember.””
“I can meet you,” Helen replied.
“But not at the hospital. Richard still knows people there.””
“Where?””
“Tomorrow morning. The old public library on Madison Street. Bring your attorney.””
Daddy agreed.
When he ended the call, Ethan was staring at the table.
“Jonathan Cole,” Daddy said.
“I remember that name.””
Ethan nodded slowly.
“Richard told everyone his son died in an accident. But Jonathan had been estranged from his father for years.””
“Why?””
“Because Jonathan discovered the fraud. He wanted to expose Richard.””
Catherine opened her notebook.
“Did Jonathan have any relationship with Evelyn?””
Ethan hesitated.
“They knew each other professionally. Evelyn worked on the foundation's financial records. Jonathan was an accountant who had noticed suspicious transfers.””
Daddy looked at the photograph again.
“So they were working together.””
“Yes.””
“And he was holding my daughter because he was there when she was born?””
“I think so.””
Daddy shook his head.
“Why would Richard remove a document identifying his own son?””
Ethan's answer came reluctantly.
“Because Jonathan was supposed to be dead.””
The room fell silent.
Catherine leaned forward.
“Are you suggesting Jonathan faked his death?””
“I don't know,” Ethan said.
“But I know Richard had a reason to make Jonathan disappear. If his son had exposed the fraud, Richard could have lost everything.””
Daddy looked at the photograph.
“Then why was Jonathan at the hospital?””
Ethan lowered his voice.
“Because he believed Richard was planning to use Evelyn's medical records against her.””
I sat quietly, listening.
I wanted to ask whether Jonathan was still alive, but the adults looked so serious that I was afraid to interrupt.
Daddy noticed my expression.
“Sweetheart, why don't you finish your pancakes? Catherine and I need to discuss something.””
I nodded.
He kissed my forehead.
“You haven't done anything wrong. None of this is your fault.””
I tried to eat, but the pancakes had gone cold.
Across the table, Catherine explained that they needed to preserve every document and avoid contacting Richard directly until they understood the evidence.
Daddy agreed.
Then he asked Ethan a question.
“Did Vanessa know about Jonathan?””
Ethan hesitated too long.
Daddy's expression changed.
“Ethan.””
“I believe she did.””
“How?””
“Richard introduced her to Jonathan's case years ago. She knew Jonathan had been investigating the foundation. She may have seen the photograph before she married you.””
Daddy leaned back.
“So she knew about the possible hospital fraud before entering my life.””
“Yes.””
Catherine closed her notebook.
“That changes the investigation. We need to determine whether Vanessa was seeking the trust for herself, whether she was acting on Richard's instructions, or both.””
Daddy looked exhausted.
“Either way, she used my daughter.””
No one contradicted him.
That afternoon, Catherine arranged for an independent laboratory to conduct a new DNA test using properly collected samples from Daddy and me. She explained that the existing report appeared consistent with his paternity, but they would verify it independently rather than rely on old records.
Daddy held my hand throughout the appointment.
The technician gave me a small cotton swab and asked me to open my mouth.
I did.
Then she smiled.
“That's all, sweetheart. You did wonderfully.””
Daddy thanked her as if she'd performed a miracle.
Outside, he knelt beside me.
“Are you worried?”” he asked.
“A little.””
“About the test?””
I shook my head.
“About Mommy.””
His face softened.
“Tell me.””
“What if she was trying to tell you something, and you didn't listen?””
Daddy looked away.
For a moment, I thought he might cry.
“Your mother tried to tell me that something was wrong,” he admitted.
“I thought she was worried about work. I was busy building the company, and I didn't understand how frightened she was.””
He held my shoulders gently.
“I can't change what happened, sweetheart. But I can make sure I listen now.””
That evening, Catherine called.
The preliminary review had revealed something troubling. The hospital records included a correction entered years after my birth, but the employee credentials attached to the correction belonged to someone who had no reason to access maternity records.
Richard Cole's former assistant.
The same woman who had handled his personal correspondence.
Catherine had requested the original audit trail.
Daddy listened without interrupting.
Then he asked, “What about the photograph?””
“The photographer's stamp indicates it was taken on the day Amara was born. That supports its authenticity, but we still need to establish why Jonathan was there.””
Daddy thanked her and ended the call.
A few minutes later, Ethan arrived with a small cardboard box.
“I found this in my storage unit,” he said.
“It belonged to Jonathan.””
Inside were old letters, financial ledgers, and a cassette tape.
Daddy picked up one of the letters.
It was addressed to Evelyn.
If Richard discovers what I've found, he'll make sure neither of us can expose him.
Daddy turned the page.
There was another sentence beneath it.
The hospital records are only one part of the plan. The real evidence is in the account Evelyn created for her daughter.
Catherine immediately leaned forward.
“An account? Is that the trust?””
Ethan shook his head.
“No. The trust held money. This account may have held documents.””
Daddy searched the box.
At the bottom was a sealed envelope with my name written across it.
*For Amara, when she is old enough to understand.*
Daddy held it for a long moment.
“Who sealed this?””
“Jonathan,” Ethan replied.
Daddy opened it carefully.
Inside was a small photograph of a baby, a handwritten note, and a key.
The note read:
*Marcus, if this reaches you, then Evelyn's fear was justified. Richard has been looking for the original evidence. Keep Amara safe.
The key opens a safety deposit box at First National Bank. The account is under Evelyn's maiden name.*
Daddy turned to Catherine.
“Can we access it?””
“If the account is legally connected to Evelyn's estate, yes. I'll contact the bank first thing tomorrow.””
Ethan looked at the photograph.
“That's Jonathan holding Amara.””
Daddy studied the man's face.
Then he noticed something.
The small scar above Jonathan's left eyebrow matched the scar visible on a recent photograph of a man standing beside Richard Cole at a business conference.
Daddy pulled out his phone and searched his saved images.
There it was.
A photograph sent to him months earlier by a business associate.
Richard Cole stood beside a gray-haired man wearing a name badge.
The badge read *James Carter*.
Daddy zoomed in on the man's face.
The scar was unmistakable.
He looked at Ethan.
“Jonathan is alive.””
Ethan stared at the screen.
“That's impossible.””
“Apparently not.””
Daddy called the business associate who had sent the photograph, but the call went unanswered.
Then he searched the conference website.
The man listed as James Carter had spoken on behalf of a private investment firm connected to Richard's company.
Daddy's phone rang.
It was Catherine.
“Marcus,” she said, “I just received the first official response from the hospital. The original birth records have been preserved.””
Daddy exhaled.
“And?””
“The records confirm you are Amara's biological father. There was no baby switch.””
His shoulders relaxed.
“Thank God.””
“But there's a second issue.””
“What?””
“An employee accessed Evelyn's medical file six months after her death. The access was authorized by Richard Cole's office.””
Daddy's face hardened.
“What did they take?””
Catherine hesitated.
“According to the audit trail, they downloaded a document identifying Jonathan Cole as the person who had been present at Amara's birth.””
Daddy looked again at the photograph.
Jonathan was alive.
Richard had hidden his identity.
And someone had been trying to erase the connection between Jonathan, Evelyn, and me.
Then Catherine added one final detail.
“The document was accessed again three weeks ago.””
Daddy's voice dropped.
“By whom?””
May you like
Catherine paused.
“Vanessa Cole.””
