Chapter 7: The Man Holding the Baby

Daddy stared at the photograph until the edges began to bend beneath his fingers.

I had never seen him look so frightened.

The man in the picture wore a white shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows. He had dark hair, a narrow face, and a small scar above his left eyebrow. He was holding a newborn baby wrapped in a yellow blanket.

Mommy stood beside him, looking exhausted but happy.

On the back, her handwriting was unmistakable.

If anything happens to me, make sure Marcus learns what Richard did at the hospital.

“Daddy?”” I whispered.

He quickly turned the photograph facedown.

“I'm here, sweetheart.””

“Who is that man?””

Daddy swallowed.

“I don't know yet.””

“Is that me?””

He looked at the baby again.

“I think so.””

“Then why isn't he you?””

Daddy didn't answer.

A waitress approached with our pancakes, noticed our faces, and quietly placed the plates on the table without asking questions.

Daddy waited until she left.

“Amara, I need to make a phone call. Can you stay here for a minute?””

I nodded, but when he stood, I caught his sleeve.

“Please don't leave me.””

He immediately sat back down.

“I'm not going anywhere without you.””

He called his attorney, Catherine Miller, and asked her to meet us at the diner.

Then he called Ethan.

The moment his brother answered, Daddy said, “I need the name of the man in Evelyn's photograph.””

Ethan went silent.

“Marcus, where did you get that picture?””

“From Evelyn's estate file. The back says Richard did something at the hospital.””

Another silence.

Then Ethan whispered, “You need to come to my apartment.””

“No. You're coming here.””

“Marcus, please. I can explain.””

“You've had years to explain. I'm done waiting.””

He ended the call.

Twenty minutes later, Ethan arrived carrying an old leather folder. His eyes were swollen, as if he hadn't slept.

He sat across from us and placed the folder on the table.

“I should have told you a long time ago,” he said.

Daddy's expression hardened.

“Start with the man in the photograph.””

Ethan looked at me, then at my father.

“His name was Dr. Adrian Blake. He worked at St. Mary's Hospital when Amara was born.””

“Was he Evelyn's doctor?””

“No. He was a pediatric specialist.””

Daddy frowned.

“Then why was he holding my newborn daughter?””

Ethan rubbed his face.

“Because Richard Cole was paying him.””

The words made Daddy go still.

“Paying him to do what?””

“To alter medical records.””

I looked down at my pancakes.

The adults kept speaking in complicated sentences, but I understood enough to know that someone had done something wrong when I was born.

Daddy leaned forward.

“Alter which records?””

Ethan opened the folder.

“Richard's company was under investigation for fraud. Evelyn had discovered evidence linking him to illegal payments made through a medical research foundation. Richard believed she had copies of documents that could send him to prison.””

Daddy's voice sharpened.

“What does that have to do with Amara?””

“Richard wanted leverage over Evelyn. He knew she would do anything to protect her child.””

Ethan pulled out a photocopy of an old hospital report.

“According to the records, Amara's birth was followed by a brief emergency involving two newborns. One baby was transferred to another unit. There was a temporary identification discrepancy.””

Daddy stared at the page.

“Two newborns?””

“Yes.””

“Are you saying my daughter was switched at birth?””

Ethan shook his head quickly.

“I don't know. That's what Richard wanted everyone to believe. But Evelyn's private notes suggest the discrepancy was deliberately created to hide something else.””

Daddy's face paled.

“What?””

Ethan looked toward the window.

“Adrian Blake told Evelyn that Richard had arranged for a false record to be inserted into the hospital system. The record claimed that one newborn had been transferred to another family. But the actual transfer never happened.””

Daddy read the report again.

“So someone invented a baby switch?””

“That's what I believe.””

“Why?””

“To make Evelyn doubt the hospital's records. To make her think someone had tampered with Amara's identity. Richard hoped she'd become so frightened that she'd surrender the documents she had collected against him.””

Daddy sat back.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then he asked the question that had been waiting between us.

“Is Amara my biological daughter?””

Ethan looked directly at him.

“Every legitimate test I've seen says yes.””

Daddy's shoulders lowered slightly.

“But you said the records were altered.””

“The records were altered. That doesn't mean the DNA was.””

Catherine arrived before Daddy could respond.

She was a tall woman with silver-framed glasses and a leather briefcase. After greeting us, she examined the photograph and the hospital report.

“Where did you obtain these copies?”” she asked Ethan.

“From Evelyn's papers.””

“Are the originals available?””

“I believe so.””

Catherine placed the photograph in a protective sleeve.

“We need the hospital's original records, the chain of custody for these documents, and an independent DNA test if there is any genuine question about biological parentage.””

Daddy nodded.

“Do whatever is necessary.””

Catherine turned to Ethan.

“And you need to tell me why you kept this information from your brother.””

Ethan lowered his head.

“Richard threatened me.””

Daddy stared at him.

“With what?””

“My job. My reputation. He said he would make it look as if I had helped him manipulate the hospital records. I had made some poor financial decisions years earlier, and he had evidence of them.””

“You let me believe Evelyn died without leaving me an explanation,” Daddy said.

“I was ashamed.””

“You let Vanessa use a fake letter to turn me against my own family.””

“I didn't know she was doing that until recently.””

Daddy stood so abruptly that his chair scraped backward.

“You should have told me!””

Ethan didn't argue.

“You're right.””

That simple admission seemed to anger Daddy even more.

“You were my brother. You were supposed to help me protect my daughter.””

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

I reached for Daddy's hand.

He looked down at me, and the anger in his face softened.

Catherine closed the folder.

“We have enough to investigate, but we shouldn't jump to conclusions. Someone appears to have manipulated records. We need proof of who did it and why.””

Daddy nodded.

Then his phone rang.

The caller ID showed an unfamiliar number.

He answered cautiously.

“Marcus Johnson.””

A woman's voice came through, thin and trembling.

“Mr. Johnson? My name is Helen Brooks.

I was a nurse at St. Mary's Hospital when your daughter was born.””

Daddy gripped the phone.

“What do you know about my daughter's birth?””

“I kept quiet for years. I was afraid I'd lose my pension, and Richard Cole made it clear that he could ruin my life.””

Daddy glanced at Catherine.

“Are you saying the hospital records were falsified?””

“Yes.””

“Was my daughter switched with another baby?””

“No,” Helen replied firmly.

“Your daughter was never switched.””

Daddy closed his eyes in relief.

Then the nurse continued.

“But someone did remove a document from the maternity file. It was a document that identified the man who had been present when your wife gave birth.””

Daddy looked at the photograph.

“Dr. Adrian Blake?””

“No,” Helen whispered.

A long silence followed.

Then she said the words that made Daddy's hand begin to shake.

“The man in that photograph wasn't the doctor, Mr. Johnson.””

“Then who was he?””

Helen took a shaky breath.

“He was Richard Cole's son.””

Daddy looked at Ethan.

Ethan's face had turned white.

May you like

Because Richard Cole had only one son.

And that man had died in a car accident years before I was born.
