Chapter 6: The Inheritance Nobody Knew About

Daddy stared at Ethan as if he had spoken in another language.

“Amara's inheritance?””

Ethan nodded.

“Evelyn left money for her daughter. A trust established shortly before Amara was born.””

I looked up at Daddy.

“I have money?””

He crouched beside me.

“Sweetheart, this isn't something you need to worry about.””

“But Vanessa said I was expensive.””

Daddy's expression tightened.

“When did she say that?””

I hesitated.

“Last month. When I broke my school shoes. She said you spent too much money on me and that I should be grateful she let me live here.””

Daddy closed his eyes briefly.

Ethan looked sick.

“Marcus, I didn't know she was saying things like that to Amara.””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“She is twisting my words.””

“No,” I whispered.

“You said I ate too much, too. You said Daddy would have more money if I didn't need new clothes.””

Daddy turned toward Vanessa.

“Is that true?””

Vanessa looked away.

“I was frustrated.””

“You made a child feel guilty for needing shoes?””

“She has everything she could possibly want!””

I glanced down at my dress.

“I don't want everything,” I said quietly.

“I just want Daddy.””

The words seemed to drain the anger from the room.

Daddy knelt and hugged me.

“You have me, sweetheart. You always have me.””

Vanessa turned away.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Daddy stood and faced Ethan.

“Tell me about the trust.””

Ethan opened a folder and spread several documents across the table.

“Evelyn created it when Amara was born. Most of the money came from investments she inherited from her grandmother. There was also a life insurance policy.””

Daddy frowned.

“I knew about the insurance. I never knew about a separate trust.””

“Evelyn handled the paperwork with her attorney. She intended to tell you when the arrangements were finalized, but she became ill before she could.””

Daddy picked up one of the documents.

“Who manages it?””

“A law firm downtown. Vanessa discovered the trust shortly after your wedding.””

Daddy looked at his wife.

“How?””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“Your financial records were in the house. I was your wife. I had every right to know what assets existed.””

“You had no right to use my daughter's inheritance as a bargaining chip.””

“I never touched the money!””

Ethan interrupted.

“Not yet.””

Vanessa glared at him.

“You don't know anything.””

“I know you contacted the trustee three months ago.””

Daddy turned sharply.

“What?””

Ethan pointed to a letter in the folder.

“This is a copy of a request to change the trust's authorized guardian. Vanessa wanted herself added as the person responsible for making financial decisions on Amara's behalf.””

Daddy scanned the page.

The signature at the bottom was Vanessa's.

“This is your signature.””

She lifted her chin.

“I was trying to ensure Amara's future.””

“By making yourself responsible for her money?””

“Someone has to manage it!””

“I'm her father!””

“And you're always distracted by your company! You travel constantly. You leave everything to other people. I was the one making sure she had food, clothes, a home—”

“You locked her in a bedroom!””

Vanessa flinched.

Daddy continued, his voice rising.

“You don't get to use basic parental responsibilities as proof that you deserve control over her inheritance.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“You're going to destroy our marriage over one mistake?””

Daddy looked at her for a long moment.

“One mistake would have been shouting at her. One mistake would have been losing your temper. You made a choice to lock an eight-year-old child in a room, then tried to erase the evidence.

You lied about her being sick. You lied about the broken handle. You created a false story about her mother, and now I find out you've been trying to gain control of her money.””

He shook his head.

“This isn't one mistake.””

Vanessa sank into a chair.

For the first time that evening, she looked smaller than I had ever seen her.

But I still didn't feel sorry for her.

I was too busy wondering whether she would lock me away again.

Daddy seemed to notice.

He came to sit beside me.

“Amara, listen to me. You're not staying alone with Vanessa tonight.””

I nodded.

“Can I sleep in your room?””

His face softened.

“Of course.””

Vanessa abruptly stood.

“You can't just throw me out of my own house!””

Daddy turned.

“This house belongs to the family trust, and the attorney will advise us on what happens next. But for tonight, you will stay away from Amara.””

“Marcus, please.””

“No.””

She looked toward Ethan.

“You've always wanted this, haven't you? You wanted to destroy my life because I married your brother.””

Ethan's face hardened.

“I wanted you to stop hurting a little girl.””

Vanessa grabbed her purse.

“Fine. I'll leave. But don't expect me to disappear quietly.””

She marched toward the front door, then stopped and looked back.

“You should ask your brother why he waited so long to tell you about the trust.””

Daddy said nothing.

Vanessa opened the door and walked out into the night.

The door closed behind her.

For several seconds, the only sound was the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway.

Then Daddy exhaled.

Daniel had remained nearby throughout the confrontation. He approached with a glass of water and set it beside me.

“Are you okay, Amara?””

I nodded.

Then I asked the question that had been troubling me.

“Will Vanessa come back?””

Daddy crouched beside me.

“I don't know, sweetheart. But if she does, she won't be allowed to hurt you.””

He looked at Daniel.

“Can you arrange for someone to stay here tonight?””

Daniel nodded.

“I'll handle it.””

Daddy thanked him, then took me upstairs.

My bedroom door was still open.

The lock had been removed.

Daddy stood in the doorway for a long moment, staring at the little room where I had spent the evening crying.

Then he picked up my teddy bear and sat beside me on the bed.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered.

I leaned against him.

“Daddy?””

“Yes?””

“Did Mommy know Vanessa was bad?””

He thought carefully before answering.

“I think your mother knew something wasn't right. But I don't believe she knew everything.””

“Was Mommy scared?””

Daddy's eyes grew distant.

“Sometimes, sweetheart. But she was brave, too.””

He tucked me beneath the blankets and stayed until my breathing slowed.

I was almost asleep when I heard him whisper into his phone.

“Yes, I need an emergency meeting with the attorney first thing tomorrow. Bring every document related to Evelyn's estate and Amara's trust.””

He paused.

“No, don't contact Vanessa.””

Another pause.

“And there's something else. I want the hospital records from the month Amara was born.””

My eyes opened.

Why did Daddy need my hospital records if the paternity report already proved he was my father?

I sat up.

“Daddy?””

He turned immediately.

“What's wrong?””

“Are you still worried I'm not your daughter?””

His face crumpled.

He sat beside me and held both my hands.

“No, sweetheart. I know who you are to me.””

“Then why do you need the hospital records?””

He looked at the phone in his hand.

“Because I need to understand why Vanessa tried so hard to make us doubt each other.””

I lay back down, but I couldn't sleep.

Through the partially open door, I heard Daddy make another call.

This time, his voice was different.

It was the voice he used when someone had threatened his company.

“Find out everything you can about Richard Cole. His finances, his business dealings, and every connection he had to Evelyn's research foundation.””

He listened.

Then he said something that made my stomach twist.

“No. Don't assume this is only about money.””

A pause.

“Vanessa may have been trying to take control of Amara's inheritance, but I think Richard was after something else.””

Daddy lowered his voice.

“Evelyn left behind evidence before she died. I need to know what it was, and why someone would risk destroying my family to find it.””

The next morning, Daddy took me to breakfast at a small diner near the park.

He ordered pancakes with strawberries and let me cover them in whipped cream.

For the first time in weeks, I laughed without checking whether Vanessa was listening.

Then Daddy's attorney called.

He stepped outside to answer.

I watched him through the window as he listened, his face becoming more serious with every passing second.

When he returned, he sat down slowly.

“What happened?”” I asked.

He took my hand.

“The attorney found something in Evelyn's estate file.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“Your mother left a sealed envelope with instructions that it could only be opened if someone attempted to interfere with your inheritance.””

My heart began to beat faster.

“What's inside?””

Daddy looked toward the parking lot.

“I don't know yet.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out a photograph the attorney had sent him.

It showed my mother standing beside a man I had never seen before.

The man was holding a newborn baby.

On the back, Evelyn had written a date and a sentence.

*If anything happens to me, make sure Marcus learns what Richard did at the hospital.*

Daddy stared at the photograph.

Then he whispered, “Oh, my God.””

May you like

Because the date on the photograph was the day I was born.

And the man holding the baby wasn't Daddy.
